WASHINGTON (AFP) - Sixty percent of all Americans strongly want the country to change direction after nearly seven years of President George W. Bush's rule, according to a new opinion poll released late Sunday.
The survey by The Washington Post and ABC News indicated that only 24 percent of those surveyed think the nation is on the right track, and three-quarters said they want the next president to chart a different political course.
A new direction is wanted not only by Democrats, but also by three-quarters of Independents and even half of Republicans, according to the poll.
More than six in 10 called the war in Iraq not worth fighting, and nearly two-thirds gave the national economy negative marks.
Meanwhile, about seven in 10 see an economic recession as likely over the next year.
There is evidence in the new poll that the coming battle for the White House is shaping up to be another hard-fought, highly negative and closely decided contest, The Washington Post said.
At this point, Senator Hillary Clinton, the Democratic frontrunner, holds the edge in hypothetical match-ups with four of the top contenders for the Republican nomination.
But her margins are far from comfortable against the two best-known Republican candidates, former New York mayor Rudolph Giuliani and Senator John McCain, The Post said.
Not one of the leading candidates in either party has a favorable rating above 51 percent in the new poll.
Twenty-eight percent said they feel strongly favorable toward Clinton, but more than a third, 35 percent, have strongly negative views of her, the survey showed.
For the fourth consecutive month, President Bush's approval rating remains at a career low, The Post said.
Thirty-three percent said they approve of the job he is doing, and 64 percent disapprove.
Well, that’s it. Bush will never be re-elected now.
Wow. They polled all of ten people. Probably their reporters.
Too much top down from DC these days, an opportunity for Republicans really, and GWB will never be loved until after he leaves office, just to large a dookie storm in the media all aimed at him.
that is lowest that Hilde’s negatives have been, so the poll may be pretty unreliable.
I am so sick and tired of the liberal ass media telling me how I feel. I feel great and even if I didn’t, I am still voting Republican in 2008. So take that MSM!!!!!!!!!
Equally true...
Yup. a rusty sword cuts both ways. not well but..
The article only mentions strongly favorable or strongly unfavorbale; they don’t mention somewhat favorable or somewhat unfavorable, so her negatives might be around what we have seen. However, they polled a random sample of adults and did not adjust for party, so who cares about the polls. I’d bet against Hillary beating Thompson by any points, let alone 18!!
Oh yea, no credibility.
WELL slap me silly! This means, according to their bogus poll, BUBBA and the VOMIT FROM HELL are out of the running than! A change not a regression!...right?!
Clintoon, back to the future. Yeah, that’s a direction change for you. The problem is the Ms Bill Clintoon has neither the brains nor the talent to pull off the endless lie like the BJ did.
The dems should make it a bumper sticker and print up millions - they use this tired old mantra every election when facing an opponent.
They use it as a stand alone statement - no explanations of from what direction to which direction - just a" change of direction"
Trouble is, it works. Without any specifics attached to it, everyone can mentally attach it their own little gripe and think: "Yeah!"
And countless thousands follow that hollow piper's tune right over the edge
I want a change in direction, too. I want fiscal conservativism.
The average American wants stability, less tubulance that Greenspan said will be the way of life in the new century. Many of the tubulance is caused by Wall Street scheming, globalism, offshoring US jobs, H-1B of US jobs, caused by free trade vs fair trade; cultural upheaval caused by liberalism; national upheaval caused by illegal immigration; degradation of quality of life caused by population explosion/congestion caused by high levels of legal immigration which will have ramifications on future population growth, social fabric, infrastructure and etc; overseas entanglements that have yielded nothing by ungrateful allies and jealousy (see the world polls) after we had paid in blood and spent hard earned taxes (i.e Indonesians running up to our helicopters sporting Bin Laden T shirts grabbing water and food after the tsunami while a UN rep is screaming that the US did not send enough money and we are cheap). Americans want their domestic problems solved first before we go overseas. After our victory in Iraq and Afhanistan, Americans do not want anymore overseas wars unless it is absolutely necessary. The next President will not be able to deploy troops as easily as GWB. Right or wrong that is the mood of the country despite economic and GDP growth which looks good at the macro level but not so good at the micro level.
exactly, more or less Fee.
ANOTHER BOGUS MSM POLL featuring an OVERSAMPLE of African-Americans — 17% of the polling sample from which one can extrapolate just how skewed the overall sample must have been toward the Democrats]. Additionally, the pollster surveyed ADULTS vs REGISTERED or LIKELY VOTERS.

COMPARATIVE BENCHMARKS . . .
President’s JA Rating:
Quinnipiac — Registered Voters
10/31: 35% approve 59% disapprove
[7 points better than ABC/WP . . . and the ‘Q’ poll leans further to the left than Newsweek . . . Speaking of Newsweek, the same pollster than surveys for this rag also polls for Maddie Albright’s PEW Poll — the other leftist polling organization that came out late last week with dire polling results for Republicans/the President. MSM pollsters are nothing if not INCESTUOUS and PREDICTABLE!]
Rasmussen — Likely Voters
Today: 36% Excellent/Good, 18% Fair, 46% Poor
[If one were to convert these stats to the standard approve/disapprove schemata, the President would actually have a 45% JA rating — essentially where Rasmussen put him during most of the 2004 election cycle!]

IGNORE THIS TRIPE . . . The Left is once again using their manufactured polling data both to advance the Democrat agenda and to demoralize Republicans, just as they did in early 2004 . . . I warned Freepers not to fall for it then and I’m warning Freepers not to fall for it now.
I can go down to Grove View Estates in beautiful downtown Fayetteville, North Carolina and get 95 percent of the “residents” to say they aren’t getting enough welfare.
Stick it where the sun down shine....
Yes, more rat congressmen, right? Puleeeeeeeeeze!
