The Port of Long Beach's Board of Harbor Commissioners was scheduled to vote Monday on a proposal to sharply reduce pollution at the nation's busiest port complex by banning an aging fleet of diesel trucks.
The proposal calls for replacing about 16,000 trucks serving the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles by 2012. The trucks, which regulators said are a leading cause of unhealthy air around the ports, could also be retrofitted to meet more stringent emissions standards.
If approved, it would move a step closer to becoming the first action taken by Long Beach and Los Angeles under a $2 billion plan that aims to cut pollution from ships, trains, terminal equipment and harbor craft by 45 percent.
"We feel confident it will be passed," Matt Szabo, a spokesman for Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, said Sunday.
Under the proposal, trucks that were made before 1989 and considered the worst polluters would have to be replaced by next October.
Funded mandate, of course?
I saw about 200 UPS trailers parked in some lots yesterday.....storage for the slowing economy... rail yards are empty too.
many of those trucks were new in 1970.
Most of the trucks running the harbors are older trucks generally by owner-operators. Their owners don’t look like they have a lot of profit margin.
More cargo diverted to Tacoma, until the granolas in WA start up with this sh-t...
We need more nuclear plants.
More business and jobs for the new and MASSIVE Tijuana port....
Will these liberal idiots EVER learn??
And.....what about all the raw sewage that goes from the homes on the coast out to the ocean.
I would think that is more innement to fix then exhuast from semi’s.
What we need are nuclear trucks!
Rrealistically electric trucks would be the best solution for the next 20 years, in the meanwhile biodiesel, a diesel engine by its very design will run on almost anything. In Europe local delivery trucks are using electric power. This will mean weeding out the old big rigs but there is life for them outside the cities and Calif.
I have been a diesel mechanic all my life and I can visualize a breakthrough in electric motors and size and I think in the near not so far future it will be common to see diesel/electromotive trucks on the roads, just like trains but on the roadway, not as big, not as long but it will happen.
Another Democrat screw job of their own constituency. That's the price of being captive.
I'd really like to know how many additional truck accidents there have been since the NAFTA ruling has been enforced.
They'll be robotic.
Probably,
But we will never see visions of a better society until we can control it from those that cannot realized the fruits of it, excuse my tirade and it should of course be directed elsewhere but in a Muslim world of the future an Islamic planet I sincerely doubt there will be laborsaving devices or holographic TVs, no pollution free hovercars, no Beam me up Scotty transportation, there will never be a better society from Islam, there has never been any recent historical proof that Islam wishes a better worry free world.
So all what men wish for is handicapped by forces that think it a blaspheny on their relgion. nuff said i think.
