George W. Bush won Kentuckys Electoral College votes by twenty percentage points in Election 2004 and fifteen points in Election 2000. But, the race for the states eight Electoral College Votes might be more competitive in 2008. The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey shows former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani leading New York Senator Hillary Clinton by just six percentage points, 47% to 41%. Its even closer with former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson in the mix. Thompson currently attracts 44% of the vote while 43% prefer Clinton (see crosstabs).
These numbers reflect a challenging political environment for the GOP in Kentucky. Incumbent Republican Governor Ernie Fletcher appears to be heading for a double digit defeat in his bid for re-election, incumbent Republican Senator Mitch McConnell is below the 50% level of support in his bid for re-election, and just 36% of Kentucky voters give President Bush good or excellent ratings for his performance in office. That 36% positive rating is a big drop from the 60% vote total earned by the President in Election 2004. Forty-six percent (46%) of Kentucky voters now say the President is doing a poor job.

Hopefully, things will look up after Ernie Fletcher fades into the background. I don’t think he’s guilty of the worst charges against him, but he has shown some bad judgement.
Republicans can’t afford to lose Kentucky in 2008.
As soon as the people in Kentucky get a good look at hildebeast... these numbers will change. They will wake up soon.
LLS
Clinton has zero chance in Kentucky.
“As soon as the people in Kentucky get a good look at hildebeast... these numbers will change.”
One would expect, yes.
Interesting that Giuliani has higher favorables than Thompson and equal unfavorables...I guess NYC is not a turnoff in the Bluegrass State...
Kentuckians have heard about Giuliani’s accomplishments- leading the city when the Twin Towers were bombed, reducing crime to lower levels than anyone imagined, bringing the city out of bankruptsy, fostering economic growth. They see someone who knows how to get positive things done, even if they don’t agree with him on every issue.
What about McCain? What about Mitt Romney?
These selective surveys are useless to me.
Agreed on your points. I think that focus on his accomplishments will be a consistent pattern throughout the South...I saw the same results in Alabama polling as well.
You think Fletcher will lose? What a shame. Watch for the media to make a huge issue over this Republican defeat. I suppose it will be the same in VA though too if the GOP loses control of the legislature.
As I recall Presidents Reagan and the first Bush did well in states with Demo governors. Dems had a majority of governorships in the 1980s so who knows. Perhaps the Repub nominee in ‘08 can do well despite Dems controlling some statehouses.
Right now, it’s important we save the Sec of State and Ag Commissioner GOP incumbents in KY. Beshear and the despicable Mongiardo are going to be a serious disaster for the state, and probably now unavoidable for the next 4 years. :-(
I agree. Democrats are pretty much dead on a national level in Ky, couple that with Hillary and they have no chance.
Kentucky and Tennessee are fairly similar so it’s hard to see why a New Yorker would do so much better than a Tennessean...unless there is spillover from UK fans resenting the fact that UT usually is higher ranked in football (and has two national championships vs. UK’s none). Or it could be because Fred is less well-known.
How much of Hillary’s support in Kentucky in particular but elsewhere as well has been due to her front runner status?
Until a few days ago she had not been asked a tough question that required her to take a stand on a serious issue. Once we have decided on a Republican nominee her numbers will go down, especially in states like Kentucky.
But I thought that Rudy would lose in the South, and Fred was the only one that could carry it?
So, Kentucky wants to vote for higher taxes for smokers, give illegal aliens drivers licenses, and wants to lose to the terrorists in Iraq?
Is that what they want? Or is it another MSM-plus-Democrat misdirection ploy?
I don't think that would have anything to do with it, but thanks for the dig, pretty in orange.
No - another poll run by the Lexington Herald Leader / Channel 36 in Lexington showed Giuliani losing to Clinton narrowly but Thompson narrowly beating her. However, Romney lost to her by double digits - she even reached the 50% mark against him - I think it was 50-39. I’m not able to find the numbers anymore, though.
Of course, these polls are way too early matter.
I don’t have a dog in that fight, but I root for whichever team Peyton Manning or Eli Manning is playing against, if that helps. The latest poll has Tennessee at #22 and Kentucky tied for #24 with Cal (all of them are 6-3).
