Arizona Nuclear Plant on Lockdown
Associated Press ^ | November 2, 2007 | Chris Kahn

Posted on 11/02/2007 11:28:54 AM PDT by yorkie

PHOENIX (AP) — The nation's largest nuclear power plant was put on lockdown Friday after a contract worker entered the facility with something that security was "not comfortable with," a spokesman said.

Security officials detained the worker at the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station and were conducting an investigation. The incident was considered an "unusual event" — the lowest of four emergencies the plant can declare, said Jim Melfi, an inspector with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Officials did not say what the worker brought to the plant. There was no threat to the public, said Palo Verde spokesman Jim McDonald.

Palo Verde, operated by Arizona Public Service Co., is the nation's largest nuclear power plant both in size and capacity. Located in Wintersburg about 50 miles west of downtown Phoenix, the plant supplies electricity to about 4 million customers in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and California.

Wonder what our Gov is gonna say about it?

See post #17:

"Officials say there is not a threat to the plant or to the public. They also say it is not terrorism related."

Lock downs in those facilities are a way of life, they happen all the time. They just simply don’t make it to the news usually. I’ve been in three THIS week. LOL

Just how bright does one need to be to become a suicide bomber?

Not very.

OTOH, being a Kamikaze or suicide bomber shouldn't be taken as presumptive evidence of stupidity. Evil fanaticism, but not stupidity.

This one, though, doesn't impress me.

No, not a test run. What we have is a plant manager doing a CYA by declaring "no threat, we stopped it, the public is safe" when he doesn't know anything.

We need to know much more about the guy with the bomb, what the nature of the bomb was, etc. before stating such a thing.

The plant manager should be ignored.

My mother-in-law works out there. I am wondering if I should call my husband to mention the situation, so he is aware. I also know a Freeper I have spoken to works out there. Perhaps he can let us know more when everything is over.

Kamikaze are in a different league. They were uniformed military going force-on-force against an armed, defended and alert military target, with more certainty of dying to protect their homeland from devastation than the average soldier. They have my respect, even though the one that hit the top of the #3 turret on the Maryland very nearly killed my Dad.

Islamokazes skulk around in mufti, and target unarmed and unsuspecting women and children, in the hopes of getting an admission ticket to their pig-dog-god’s whorehouse in the sky. They are lower that the meanest cockroach.

Myway.com (link from Drudge) reported: Security officials at the nation's largest nuclear power plant detained a contract worker with a small explosive device in the back of his pickup truck Friday, authorities said.

Let me ask a question here...and I don't want to seem racist: What nationality was the man???
