Arizona Nuclear Plant on Lockdown

PHOENIX (AP) — The nation's largest nuclear power plant was put on lockdown Friday after a contract worker entered the facility with something that security was "not comfortable with," a spokesman said.

Security officials detained the worker at the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station and were conducting an investigation. The incident was considered an "unusual event" — the lowest of four emergencies the plant can declare, said Jim Melfi, an inspector with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Officials did not say what the worker brought to the plant. There was no threat to the public, said Palo Verde spokesman Jim McDonald.

Palo Verde, operated by Arizona Public Service Co., is the nation's largest nuclear power plant both in size and capacity. Located in Wintersburg about 50 miles west of downtown Phoenix, the plant supplies electricity to about 4 million customers in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and California.

If he got thru the gate, how did they find out about the pipe bomb? Did he pass thru the gate and yell out his window....”Ha, ha........I’ve got a bomb!” —and then they pursued him? It doesn’t make sense.

And not a very bright one.

Just how bright does one need to be to become a suicide bomber?

MSNBC just showed an officer from the Maricopa Swat team, and he said this man lives in an apartment in Phoenix, but the investigation is going to go further than originally thought.

I’ve been wondering when something like this was going to happen out there. Wonder what our Gov is gonna say about it?

Explosives detectors? I would think the main gate of a nuclear power facility would be a prime location for explosives and nuclear material detectors.
