WALLACE: We've got about 45 seconds left. There's a lot of talk and I don't know whether you like it or hate it that you're a new GOP rock star.
What lesson do you think your party should learn from your campaign and your success in Louisiana?
JINDAL: Well, my primary my obligations are obviously to Louisiana. But I think the reason Republicans did so poorly in 2006 wasn't that the country stopped being conservative. It was the party stopped being conservative.
It's not enough to want power for the sake of wanting power. You know, we waged here a principled campaign against corruption, against out-of-control spending, pledged to cut taxes.
I think as the Republican Party gets to its principled roots, it will see more enthusiasm among voters. Voters don't want you to pretend to be an imitation of your opponents. They want you to stick to your principles and be honest, even if you disagree with the voter, and tell them where you stand.
So if we'll get back to our roots against the earmarks, the pork barrel spending, the Bridges to Nowhere, if we will get back to not just covering up corruption, but standing for the strongest ethical standards, I think the voters will reward that.

You know he supported SCHIP. I’m not sure he is as conservative as most FReepers assume he is.
He doesn’t need to name names, but he pretty much pegged Rudy Mc Romney.
Did he support Schip before or after they starting adding people of higher income and “children” in their twenties? I think knowing the answer to this question will tell us more about him.
I am from Louisiana and I must say.... you are probably correct. I have hope for Jindal, but low expectations. He is indeed a conservative, however once he faces the reality that most Republicans in the legislature don't have in their hearts a strong belief in Limited government, he will likely just seek to restrain the growth of government. In years past, Louisiana had more jets in it's state fleet than California. A previous governor asked for an accounting of the number of state vehicles-- the officials could never provide it. Louisiana like almost all other states has been moving steadily towards more and more control over our lives. Heck, I doubt that most state legislators could name more than 3 of the Bill of Rights. If Jindal leads and accomplishes anything dramatic in the way of truly "cutting" government spending and reducing regulations, I will be surprised. No doubt he is talented and conservative, but he is going up against near impossible odds.
And that is the problem with being only a Governor, it is a watered down position, and the best of intentions and policies can flounder on the Rocks of the System.
I would like Jindal to invite the FBI in to audit the entirety of the records of the LA State Govt.
I hear you about the State Level Corruption, I’m from NC, and we have the same thing, it’s so entrenched that the Raleigh Politicos are brazen with their corruption.
Hey, he gets it.
You would have to triple the FBI staff to have enough people :) The corruption in Louisiana government is truly breathtaking (as it is in many other states)
I hear you about the State Level Corruption, Im from NC, and we have the same thing, its so entrenched that the Raleigh Politicos are brazen with their corruption.
I lived a number of years in Florida. Corruption is a part of any institution. Many times more in government than in business. Our Founders wanted limited and weak government. I doubt that more than 5% of even Republicans in office nationwide would do the right thing and vote to eliminate programs outright. I doubt Jindal will propose anything truly sweeping in they way of reigning in government. I wouldn't blame him because he knows the legislature would not stop laughing at him... sad. Socialism is a cancer that will likely bring us to our knees. They is no easy solution.
Yep, graft gets them everytime.
Positive messages like that we don’t need.
I will only vote for candidates that have high morals, will make America stronger and will promote self reliance.
Hey, if you're the expert why don't you come up with some specific proposals and send them to Bobby? Of course he has already proposed a raft of specific new ideas and has promised to call the legislature into session on his first day in office to get started. But since you already know Bobby's agenda will fail it seems like a good time for you to help out.
(If my response seems harsh to you, please ask yourself the likely effect on Louisiana of people clinging to cynical attitudes such as yours at this moment when Louisiana has the greatest oportunity for reform that it has had in many years. Bobby addressed this issue (cynicism) explicitly in his acceptance speech on election night and since. Was he wrong to point this out as a significant barrier to progress?)
He pegged Frederick Rudy McRomney.
Sounds like it is time to issue an executive order freezing the purchase of vehicles for the state.
my, aren't you sensitive.

It is a certainty that I will have no effect of the success or failure of Bobby. I am certain he has good intentions. I am by no means a cynic. I am quite happy in my life. I view government in the same lens as our Founders -- with deep suspicion. When one considers the growth of government at all levels these past 100 years, it is quite rational to state that there is little chance of "true" reform that would jump start Louisiana or any other government. I call it being realistic.
Bobby addressed this issue (cynicism) explicitly in his acceptance speech on election night and since. Was he wrong to point this out as a significant barrier to progress?
He is right to point this out. With all good intentions and energy considered, Bobby needs to convince the state legislators to pass sweeping reform. The Louisiana legislature is like most others -- filled with petty busybodies who relish passing this law or that, taking away more of our Liberties. I will not be disappointed it he only manages to change things at the margins.
Now, if Bobby could get the legislature to get rid of the state income tax and reduce spending in a consummate fashion, that would be surprising. That would propel him into Presidential considerations. Have a nice day :)
Fred’s not part of that club, it should be obvious.
I guess it’s less obvious to me. But I’ve only been watching this stuff since I was working in the Reagan campaign in 1976 while in Junior High School...
And out of the Republican candidated Fred is the only one that would theoretically carry the torch so to speak from Reagan’s legacy. I would throw Duncan Hunter in there but at the debates he doesn’t come across as a leader at all. Poor speaker and if we learned anything is you need someone that can speak well and not always be on defense the way GWB has been the last 8 years.
I never associated Thompson with anything especially conservative. Helms, Coburn, Sessions, Wallop, Ashcroft are all senators that come to mind.
