Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson yesterday staked out one of the toughest plans on the campaign trail to curb illegal immigration, trying to reignite the issue among the GOP faithful who rose up in revolt against a more moderate approach in Congress earlier this year.
Highlighting what he believes are key vulnerabilities for his main rivals, Thompson called for stripping federal funds from cities and states that do not report illegal immigrants and criticized Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney for allowing so-called sanctuary cities in New York and Massachusetts.
The first principle of Thompson's plan is "No Amnesty," a clear shot at another rival, Senator John McCain of Arizona, who joined President Bush in trying unsuccessfully to push through a sweeping immigration overhaul bill that would have created a guest worker program and provided a path to possible citizenship for the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in the country.
Thompson's plan provoked a new round of sparring among the contenders, underscoring that polls indicate that none of them has been able to emerge in the minds of Republican voters as the candidate best able to fix the broken immigration system.
Party officials in key primary states said yesterday that the candidate who can win voters' trust on immigration could make significant gains. Polls indicate that Republicans care more than Democrats about the issue and support a harder line against illegal immigrants.
"It's a very significant issue in America that few politicians are willing to tackle head-on, and when they do, they tackle it the wrong way," said Karen Hanretty, a Thompson spokeswoman. She said Thompson will trumpet his plan today in South Carolina, which holds the first Southern primary, on Jan. 19, and will address it Saturday in Iowa, which holds the first caucus, on Jan. 3.

Yes, they are all starting to parrot Hunter. Mark my words, they’ll be all pretending to be tough on China pretty soon too.
I have to admire your tenacity, even if not your wisdom.
A time honored political tradition, stealing from the guy who has the best ideas. Next the republicans will be lining up for the Personhood At Conception plan.
B4DH.
A) If Duncan Hunter fails to secure any 2008 GOP National Convention delegates after several primaries, AND, B) Bushbot-type Open Borders people here on FR who support FDT and in the larger world (supporters/big contributors/campaign aides) start to defect from Thompson BIG TIME precisely over his no-nonsense illegal immigration stance--then I will know it is real, it is an option, and it is a possibility for me; I am open to be convinced.
Let me revise that:
I have to admire your tenacity, if not your perspicacity.
That statement was fact. In 2007, all the sudden the border and the illegal invasion is a hot topic. It has been one of Hunter’s Hottest topics since 1981. Alas, the Thompsons and McCains and Brownbacks and Huckabees and Giulianis ranged from bad to horrific on the subject all these years.
How is Congressman Hunter doing in the latest polls? I’ve been busy the last few days and haven’t had time to check...
Well, he is moving up in the right direction, but starting from nada, that does not mean much yet.
Not very well. I don’t choose my candidate based upon how the media says we should like them, I choose him by how he stands on the issues and his character. Hunter shines here. It’s the primaries. You push for the guy who would make the best president.
Too little, too late.
Can you show us when and where Duncan announced that plan? I’d like to compare them, but I searched and can’t find anything even similar.
Thanks.
When Hunter starts outpolling the Huckster , we’ll talk .....
Tootyfruityrudy is engaging in the same tradition, but he is so much less believable. Conversions on the road to Iowa.
Giuliani talks tough on immigration (would end illegal immigration in as few as three years)

I never asked you to change candidates, I merely asked two Hunter supporters how he was doing. My God, that lunatic Rep. Paul is polling and out-fundraising Rep. Hunter because of his slck-jawed followers. What a strange circus that is!
Well, that's a pretty sure bet...
AND, B) Bushbot-type Open Borders people here on FR who support FDT and in the larger world (supporters/big contributors/campaign aides) start to defect from Thompson BIG TIME precisely over his no-nonsense illegal immigration stance
I suppose you might see this could happen, but frankly, I don't know who these people are that you are referring to. "Bushbots" or "open borders" types as you call them aren't generally Thompson supporters. They wouldn't have much natural affinity for Thompson or for his ideas. Don't these one-world types more naturally gravitate to Mitt Romney or Rudy Giuliani?--
then I will know it is real, it is an option, and it is a possibility for me; I am open to be convinced.
In the fullness of time you are a certain Fred Thompson supporter. I will happily welcome you aboard when the time comes.
Hunter beat everyone in the Texas straw poll, so maybe you should narrow down what you mean by outpolling.
God bless FDT. He is showing smarts and life. I've been waiting for one of the major candidates to get serious and specific on illegal immigration. A program aggressively fighting ILLEGAL immigration is a winning issue for any candidate of either party.
This whole race reminds me of the Kahleefornyea recall election. We have allowed the MSM to determine who our frontrunners are. It’s our own fault. We’ll get what we deserve if we keep listening to them about how and whom we should choose.
