TAMPA, Fla. - Republican Fred Thompson sidestepped a question about the Terri Schiavo right-to-die case last month, saying he didn't remember the details. On Monday he said he's uncomfortable discussing it because of his own daughter's death.

"And this will probably be the last time I ever address it."

He added: "It should be decided by families. The federal government and the state government, too except for the court system ought to stay out of it, as far as I'm concerned."

Oh, I agree. But I also think that when a person is going to be tortured to death under order from a court, everyone has the responsibility to get invilved. Courts are NOT infallible.
I would give him the benefit of the doubt except Fred has been asked about the Schievo case before. Last time he said he didn’t remember the details and he got a lot of negative press about it. So, I am sure that his staff - assuming they are not incompetent - have thoroughly briefed him on the case in the month since the last time he was asked. So, when he tells a personal story and indicates that he doesn’t want to talk about it but thinks that the federal and state government - except for the courts - should stay out of it, I don’t see any way to interpret this other than that he would have let the state courts murder Terri without doing anything to stop them.
Since when is MURDER "family business"?
Just my opinion...want a piece of Cherry Pie?
By the way...Kennedy was responsible for taking a life and look where he is...Senior Senator from "Massachusetts" you know, Mitt's state.
Get a load of this one. As far as globalist Thompson is concerned, MURDER is "family business."
I am not judging people who have made their wishes known. My problem with the Schaivo case was that Michael Schaivo won a judgment for her care after convincing a judge (or jury?) that she wanted to live. Then when the money ran out he decided that she really, really had wanted to die. If people make their wishes known, fair enough. The Schindlers were willing to take care of her. Michael could have simply divorced her. Most people that I know sided with Michael because, if THEY were in Terriâs condition they would want to die. Most people werenât thinking about what Terri might want. They were thinking about themselves in her situation.
I was also a paralegal. Sorry, but the default has ALWAYS been, absent proof, the presumption is a person wants to LIVE.
If it were not the case, then there is no necessity to have a “living will” stipulating you WANT TO DIE.
Pinging you to this thread where Fred was asked about the Terri Schievo case, told the story of his daughter, and then said on matters like these the government (state and federal) should not get involved except for the courts.
Let those who would have to care for her decide. In this case, her parents. Her brother and sister.
Well, Fred’s comment is meaningless. This was an intra-family dispute.
Murder is not “intra-family.” Murder is a criminal act prosecutable by the State within the courts.
Starving and dehydrating someone to death is called.....murder....just ask Kevorkian.
Yes, you’re correct. I am being a tad sarcastic about Fred and his view over what courts get involved in. What it seems to boil down to is the old medieval rule - decide for the strongest. Don’t need a Judge in such a law system, you need a willing Bribee. Money is strength. Hillary law.
“Fred screwed up here.”
You have no idea.
There is quite a bit of difference of opinion, however on the ethics of removing food and water with the intent to cause death, especially in this case which used substituted judgment.
There was no technology required. The food and water by tube would not have even been “medical treatment” in most States, including Texas.
The judge ruled that it was - he even said that ice chips and water by mouth were “medical experiments.”
The high handed judicial rulings that go against every decent medical ethics are a problem that we will probably continue to talk about for years.
I believe she died of cancer.
“On the contrary. Those of us with this type of personal experience know exactly what he means. Its a family matter, period.”
Absolutely.
The care of human life and happiness, and not their destruction, is the first and only legitimate object of good government.

I apologize for my caustic response; you played the "vegetable" defense too well (without using that word, of course). I long remember the disgusting comments from supposed conservatives in FR (and elsewhere) during that time period....I question anyone who goes along with the idea that "it's okay" that Thompson agrees with a murderer's self-serving claims concerning Terri's alleged desires. More and more Thompson is showing he's no conservative (though I knew that long ago). I think your observation is spot on: the elitists don't need no steenking judge or legal system. We're back to the old days of feudalism.
Well-posted quote.
We need some Thomas Jeffersons....where are they all?
