LA Times ^ | 9:35 AM PDT, October 21, 2007 | Associated Press

UPDATE: The city of Malibu is advising residents in Puerco Canyon to begin evacuating due to a wildfire driven by powerful winds. This area is north of Pacific Coast Highway and about 1 mile west of Pepperdine University. Residents along the beach on Malibu Road may soon be evacuated. Pacific Coast Highway is closed between Kanan-Dume Road and Topanga Canyon. Residents are advised to head to the west. Evacuation centers are being set up in the Zuma Beach area.

A wildfire driven by powerful winds in the Malibu Hills this morning threatened a university, destroyed at least one home and forced the evacuation of hundreds more, authorities said.

Thanks, there is this fire map to check out.

http://www.sdcountyemergency.com/newsreleases/10222007EvacFire2230.pdf

I pray it is wrong. I think my friends house is slightly into the red zone near gird road, but closer in toward the red fire zone.

Oh dear, how reliable has that blog been? I have to check a map and see exactly where the evacuation is.

Follow the link. It's a blog being posted by staff at the San Diego Union Tribune. Readers can also comment. I'm not sure what the original source is for their alerts.

The blog has been accurate--but I can't speak for the comment posted by the reader.

Okay... " Pointe Parkway at Jamacha Boulevard are being evacuated. The fire is fast approaching Sweetwater Springs."

Looking on maps.live.com Pointe Parkway crosses Jamacha on the South but then Sweetwater Springs crosses on the North of Jamacha.

Pointe Parkway is Northeast of Sweetwater Reservoir. Jamacha Blvd. runs along Sweetwater Reservoir.

My brother lives a little Northwest of there, but is in an area with tons of trees, narrow winding roads. Hmm.

Thanks calcowgirl. That looks like good information. If the fire is even that close, then my brother should evacuate because of what the area is like where he lives.

This is not good.

Thanks again, calcowgirl. For all I know my brother and his family have already been evacuated. I tried to phone him yesterday afternoon and his phone line rang without the voice mail picking up. I left a message on his cellphone and I’m thinking they’re already out of there. Hopefully.

One of the Posters mentioned an area which is pretty close to where my brother lives.

Do you know what they’re calling this fire?

I just linked onto the KPBS link and am listening.

They’ve been doing a fabulous jobs with the evacuations. If they were in danger, I think they would have been advised. They’ve had evacuations of more than 300,000 folks (I even read 350,000). They are using “Reverse 911” calls. Pretty cool!

They’re losing lots of homes, but not residents (if that is any consolation).

10-23-07, 1:57 a.m. CHP says there is a fire at 3-mile marker of Wildcat Canyon Road . They are describing the fire as 300 yards wide and the “whole side of mountain.” Units on scene right now. Also, there are reports of fire coming down the mountain into San Miguel area. Flare-ups at the following locations:
Honey Springs and Deerhorn Valley, Dulzura,
Aqua Tivia and fire crews are evacuating Point Parkway Map 1291, F2

10-22-07, 8:36 p.m. WITCH FIRE: The latest update from CALFIRE reports the fire is now 145,000 acres and zero percent contained. The cause is under investigation.

600 structures have been destroyed (500 residences, 50 outbuildings, 100 commercial properties)
300 structures have been damaged (250 residences, 75 commercial properties and 50 outbuildings)
Seven injuries to firefighters; one civilian injury
The fire is threatening the communities of San Diego , Poway, Ramona, Escondido , Lakeside, Valley Center , San Marcos , Rancho Santa Fe. Currently, about 625 firefighters are battling the blaze using 89 engines, nine fire crews, ten dozers and two water tenders.

HARRIS FIRE:

The Harris Fire has now burned 22,000 acres and is five percent contained. Some civilians have chosen not to evacuate and have created rescue problems as the fire impacts their community.

Five firefighters injured; one civilian fatality, six civilians injured
The cost to date to fight this fire is $1,300,000
The fire is threatening the communities of Potrero, Barrett Junction, Barrett Lake area, Engineer Springs, Dulzura, Deerhorn Valley , Lawson Valley , Jamul, Lyons Valley area and Otay Mountain , and extreme fire conditions are making conditions difficult. No additional updates on the other fires are available at this time.

10-22-07 5:02 p.m. CAL FIRE update: The Harris Fire is well over 20,000 acres. Mapping and accuracy of acres is difficult due to rapid rate of fire spread. There is 0% containment and the fire’s spread is moving westerly towards Otay Lake. Firefighters are focusing all efforts on protection of life, property, and firefighter safety. SDGE’s Southwest major transmission line remains shut down.

The Witch Fire is 12,000 acres. There is a mandatory evacuation in Scripps Ranch. Fifty homes destroyed in Poway, 70 homes destroyed in Escondido, 6 homes destroyed in Rancho Santa Fe, an unknown number of structures destroyed in Rancho Bernardo. The fire is spreading in a west and south direction. The fire has crossed I-15 at Lake Hodges heading southwest to the communities of Carmel Mountain Ranch, Mira Mesa, and 4-S Ranch and south toward Peutz Valley, Harbison Canyon, the western part of Alpine. The head of the fire is burning in the same path as the Cedar Fire in 2003.

ALL Airtankers and helicopters are currently flying including the DC-10 supertanker from CAL FIRE. Citizens along the fire’s edge are requested to stay away from any area that has helicopters or airtankers dropping retardant or water. These aircraft are trying to protect structures and have to be very cautious when civilians are on the ground nearby.

Damage Assessment Teams have been ordered. We should get better numbers on number of homes damaged or destroyed once they are deployed.

Thanks. I’m watching the Witch Fire because my mom is under “evacuation advisory”. I found on one of the KPBS linked maps at Google that Carlsbad, south of Palomar Airport” is on evacualtion alert. I think that means that it could turn to “mandatory” at any time. I still haven’t found a single good source for alerts. The State website isn’t up do date and the county website hasn’t been updated since 5PM.

Here’s a pic of San Miguel mountain “ablaze”
