The Boy Scouts of America's refusal to bend its rules to permit gay scouts will cost the organization's local chapter $200,000 a year if it wishes to keep its headquarters in a city-owned building on Logan Square.
Representatives of the Boy Scouts of America's Cradle of Liberty Council were notified that to remain in their 79-year-old landmark headquarters, they needed to pay the city a "fair market" rent, Fairmount Park Commission president Robert N.C. Nix said yesterday. Currently, the rent is $1 a year....

Too bad the government doesn’t care about the Constitution.
"You're done!"
"Give it to me straight!"
"You're through!"
"What's the word on the street?"

That statement is your own opinion and is not part of the article nor the Supreme Court opinion being referenced. The actual rate for "fair market value" is also not a part of the Supreme Court decision being referenced.
So again, it is not a legal issue, but an issue of whether or not the City "appears" to be "supporting" the Scouts by charging $1.00/year versus $200,000/year.
See post 290.
And the anti-discrimination law was passed a couple of years ago, whereas the lease agreement was made 78 years ago.
So, based on your logic, if your city changes its rules for the property you own in 2007 when you are too old to work and have to support an invalid wife and a grandchild with major health problems, and suddenly the buildings you get rent from are no longer "yours" because your township changes its laws in 2057, that would be OK with you?
Good one! Fortunately, that one is in writing!
And how about this old chestnut: "You trust your mother, but you cut the cards."
Philadelphia is evil!!!
Stay away, stay away.
The city is not fit for children.
I agree with most of what you said, and I don't know you so I can't tell what you may have learned in the Boy Scouts that wasn't already within you. I just see a contradiction between honesty, morality, and character, and an entitlement mentality just because your organization happens to promote honesty, morality, and character.
Once again, I'm on your side. What I want to see is the BSA -- and ALL private organizations -- owning their own land free of government interference. Wouldn't this be true to the Boy Scout vision of self-reliance? To do this, they have to obtain land at a fair price. But once again, I wasn't around in Philadelphia in 1928 to be privy to the original agreement.
That hasn't stopped the sex zealots from trying, and costing churches plenty. If the local government is corrupt or gay-favoring, the church may have to go all the way to appeal to get justice from petty taxation suits, forbidden parking accommodations, denied building permits, etc etc. Have you heard of the Ocean Grove Methodists' recent problem, being sued because they would not allow their beachfront property to be used for a lesbian wedding? It will cost them plenty to get justice, and may not be able to because of the preponderance of gays in resort town locations.
That is just the stark reality of owning property in the United States. In 1990 Bush I signed the Americans with Disabilities Act and I have had to upgrade at major expense buildings to be in compliance with ADA.
You are assuming good will on the part of the City Council, which is not the case; rather, it is a Democrat ideological persecution of the Scouts because they do not permit homosexual behavior. If it were a simple problem-solving exercise, it wouldn't be a problem.
San Diego and other cities have been having huge lawsuits involving Christian crosses on public lands erected after WWII as war memorials to the many Christians who died serving our country. Present city governments want to retroactively tear down these memorials, saying they violate discrimination policies. In some cases, private groups have purchased the plot of land under the memorial to try to solve the problem, only to have the ACLU attack dogs go back in and run up ruinuous costs splitting more legal hairs. The fights will continue.
I agree with that!
In 1928, the Scouts were a revered instutution, albeit a private one. The Scouts and scouting have not changed much aside from adapatation for technology and a shift in emphasis in terms of activities toward slightly more urban fare. I have manuals going back into the '20s, picked up at yard sales and the like, plus my own from my childhood, and the same core principles are still stressed.
What has changed is a decadent and complacent culture, one which has, by and large, abandoned or permitted to be compromised many of the standards of decency which were once so widely embraced.
If the lease is up, the city has the option of raising the rent on the land. If the city is doing so because the Scouts will not undermine their core beliefs by complying with the city demands that they open their organization to homosexuals, that just isn't the same as raising the rent for more rent money, it is an attempt at extortion.
The Scouts have not changed, but the city sure has and at least local culture as well.
Hopefully, the Scouts can find a suitable headquarters building elsewhere. If anyone hears of such a relocation in the works, and a place to send donations to help make it happen, please post the information. I'll chip in a bit.
One of the most corrupt cities on planet Earth. Don't hold your breath waiting for justice on this issue in Philadelphia.
Precisely.
HOW do people ask why they “get to pay” $1 rent...???
When I was a scout, we went to a building at Kelly Springfield tire co. for nothing. We cleaned up the place when we left, and it may have cost some electricity and water for the 1-2 hours we were there. Once a week but...that’s about it.
I guess the idea is to make them pay so much that they have to meet outdoors or not at all...???
...so that we’ll have even MORE youth involved with gangs, drugs and the like?
See how much THAT costs over time!
LOL! "There you go again." Ronald Reagan
Because a reporter says it in a newspaper doesn't mean it's true; in fact, that may be a good indication that it's propaganda, and off the point of the legal priorities of the case involving a lease agreement that long, long predated any recent discrimination statutes.
We hear you. Unfortunately, a fair price is not going to happen, now that the ACLU and the gay lobby have designated the Boy Scouts as their prime enemy, and have been vigorously persecuting the organization on ideological grounds, choosing the venues and judges most likely to grant victory to the moral detructionists. So, the battle is joined and traditionalists must choose a side.
I think one of the reasons I and others have been going after you so vigorously on this thread is that you seem unclear on the idea that it is ok for you to despise unfair "takings" and retroactive application of ideologically-based lawsuits. You at first seemed to support the City government. Now you are saying, oh, well, they forced me to do something extremely costly.
What we are saying to you is, stand up and fight before it gets worse! It's ok, and certainly it's ok here on FR, to despise the socialist/collectivist/elitist mentality that is destroying small business, private property, and individual liberties. Stand up!
