Thompson cautions against Clinton obsession
Boston Globe ^ | 10/16/07 | Sue Milligan

WASHINGTON -- Republicans, it seems, have already decided they're running against New York Senator Hillary Clinton, and have made the Democratic presidential candidate a frequent target on the campaign trail.

References to "Hillary-care'' and other derisive remarks about Clinton's platform might rile up the conservative base. Rudy Giuliani, the GOP front-runner in national polls, argues incessantly that he's the one who can beat Clinton next November.

But the focus on Clinton makes for a bad general election strategy, former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson warned today.

Addressing a polite, but unenthusiastic, audience of the Republican Jewish Council, Thompson said his party needs to persuade voters to vote for Republicans -- not against Clinton.

"I don't think we need to worry about Hillary Clinton as much as we need to worry about ourselves,'' Thompson, a late entry into the presidential race, told the group. Merely demonizing Clinton would "play into the hands'' of the Democrats, he said. Instead of telling voters what's wrong with the Clinton approach, "we need to figure out what we want to do,'' he said.

"we need to figure out what we want to do''

Well Fred, some of us have already figured that out.

Perhaps, but that last sentence is a head scratcher.

Most notably Rudy!

With him it is either the boogey-man Hillary or 9/11.

He has nothing else in his bag of tricks.

I’m sure he said something after that sentence , but the article cut it off there . It was poorly written .

Just another attempt at making Fred sound bad .

I took the intention of his comment to mean encouraging Republicans to strategize how best to beat the Democrat running (whether it’s Hillary or someone else).

Even Duncan Hunter needs to do that. Any Republican running for POTUS right now needs to do that.

I know where DH stands on the issues, but I don’t know how he plans on winning.

Obsession is exactly right. I can't tell you how many times in these threads we see the single-issue folks wearing Hillary masks saying "boo!" (And no, I'm not talking about selective, choosy pro-life voters; I'm talking about the obsessed anti-Hillary crowd who will vote for anyone who runs against Hillary no matter what they stand for).

Could be the author of the article more that what Fred said. Sounds to me like she left out the meaning in the form of the rest of what Fred said as the article ends right there.

Of course it could be her gushing and fawning over Obama...

Ill. senator tests possible '08 run

MANCHESTER, N.H. -- Barack Obama , a national political newcomer with an uncomplicated message of hope and promise, won standing ovations from enthusiastic crowds yesterday as he tested the New Hampshire landscape for support for a 2008 Democratic presidential run.

Exactly right. Many single-issue RINOS and MSM want to boil down the Republican vote to this.

"...we need to figure out what we want to do"

Well Fred, some of us have already figured that out.

Oh, come on, stop being so shallow. Dig about 1 micron below the surface and the statement reads: "We need to send a positive message to the public about our positions and policies." In other words, instead of trying to drag someone else down, lift yourself up.

I think that Fred has figured out where he stands on the issues, as a quick look at his website will undoubtedly confirm.

I agree. There is a BIG difference between being for something and against something. Which raises the question that should unite us. What are we FOR here on FR?

Yeah, the Red Sux lost again last night, giving up 7 runs in the fifth inning.

Clinton Derangement Syndrome is as real as BDS.

I compare it to those who see her as Countess Dracula and there's only one stake in the region that the anti-vamps can drive into her heart...a special gold stake that was pulled up from the regional railline. But by using that special stake, the entire national train schedule becomes permanently disrupted. The party can't go anywhere; conduct business. The folks are stuck living in Transylvania.
