Is the Anerican Cancer Society shilling for Hillary-care with recent spate of TV ads portraying presumed cancer victims who can't afford medical insurance? What about principle that not-for-profit groups have to be non-partisan?
I saw that too. Despicable. Using people who have cancer to stump for Hillary and creating the illusion that all people with cancer somehow agree with American Cancer Society.
I can think of no other unfortunate affliction where socialized medicine would be even more damaging to those suffering with it.
We stopped dealing with the ACS when we discovered that, regardless of assurances made, our Relay-for-Life monies raised locally left the area with hardly any remaining for local programs. That and the fact that an insanely low amount going to actual research— but I high amount going to administrative costs, salaries, and perks like annual junkets to Colorado.
We started out own local program instead.
Its about Hitlery and Socialism so you can just ...fogeddaboutit!
Non-profit groups don’t have to be nonpartisan. They just cant endorse candidates.
I agree the commercials are disgraceful. Dishonest as can be. Wouldn’t hurt to let the ACS know that you won’t give them a dime as long as they lie like this.
Hillary care is as big a disaster. They deserve each other.
Apparently, I can’t type on Monday mornings.
I'm a volunteer with Relay for Life, and thought (perhaps mistakenly) that the great percentage of money raised goes directly to cancer research. It would be a HUGE disappointment to me to find out that this inspirational event is not what it seems.
In all fairness, in recent years there has been a great improvement in survivorship with nearly all types of cancer. After losing many close family members to this dreaded disease, I am elated to have a brother who just celebrated his two-year anniversary of surviving lung cancer.
Why doesn’t the American Cancer Society pick up the bill? Isn’t that what they are for?
Unfortunately, I'm not going to be able to. This was seven years or so ago. When we discovered that local money wasn't sticking around, we got interested and started looking through ACS's publicly available financial statements. It quickly became apparent what was going on... and what wasn't.

Tell me about it! We volunteered for years prior to this-- and looked forward to the event every year. We were massively disappointed.
I recommend looking at their public financial disclosures. It's possible things have changed in the intervening years, but I doubt it.
Yes.
not-for-profits are allowed to push a certain amount of their budget for political ISSUES not candidates.

That’s why the ads on tv don’t mention Hillary or her plan specifically. But I guess we all get the idea.
The ACS is one among many iconic charity missions that have persisted based on mostly an image of compassion and selflessness while in reality venturing further with the passage of time from its original stated goals and ambitions.
If cancer is ever defeated nationwide the ACS will continue apace just as the venerable March of Dimes now does long after the need for such a group was seen as a medical emergency back in 1938 which led to a race for a cure for polio.
Even though polio has been virtually eradicated the movement remains strong and still marches on while a dime won’t even buy you a penny candy.
AARP has been left leaning for a long time. I did have a membership with them for a time, following in my father’s footsteps who had his auto and homeowners insurance with them. But even Dad soured on the organization when he was able to procure insurance elsewhere for less. And I found that the travel benefits AARP once offered were also being matched elsewhere. It wasn’t worth it to be bombarded with constant politicizing. I think the last straw for me was when the organization vehemently opposed Social Security reform a couple of years ago. I realized that AARP did not represent my needs or my political views and had become a shill organization for the far left entitlement class. So that was the end of that. Every once in a while though I get mail solicitations asking me to come back. Needless to say, those mail solicitations go into the round file. :)
I couldn’t take it after the second time I saw that blasted commercial. I emailed them from their website and complained letting them know I would never again contribute or help out since they were using donated funds to push a socialist agenda that is unamerican. I probably won’t hear back from them, but they are shameless, aren’t they?
