New York Times Poll: Evangelicals Agree with Dr. Dobson
by Jennifer Mesko, associate editor
Majority only will support a presidential candidate who shares their values.
A New York Times/CBS News poll shows white, evangelical Republicans agree with Dr. James Dobson.
Nearly 60 percent of those who plan to vote in the primaries said they could not support a candidate they didn't agree with on issues such as abortion and same-sex marriage. Eighty-six percent said presidential candidates should be judged on both their political record and their personal life.
Dr. Dobson has taken a beating in the media for promising to vote only for a candidate who shares his basic values, even if that means supporting a third-party candidate.
Last week, he wrote an op-ed piece for The New York Times to clarify his position: "Speaking personally, and not for the organization I represent, I firmly believe that the selection of a president should begin with a recommitment to traditional moral values and beliefs. Those include the sanctity of human life, the institution of marriage, and other inviolable pro-family principles. Only after that determination is made can the acceptability of a nominee be assessed."
Rick Scarborough, president of Vision America, a Texas-based group that has a network of 5,000 pastors willing to mobilize their churches to vote, said evangelicals are not bluffing.
I am not going to cast a sacred vote granted to me by the blood of millions of God-fearing Americans who died on the fields of battle for freedom, for a candidate who says its OK to kill the unborn, he told The Times. I just cant.
WATCH DR. DOBSON ON TV
Dr. James Dobson will be a guest on Hannity & Colmes on the Fox News Channel tonight at 9 ET. The program re-airs at midnight ET. He will offer his views, as a private citizen, on the 2008 presidential election.

Read Dr. Dobson's op-ed that ran in The New York Times last week.

DMT and LLS:
My FRiends apparently Saint Donna cannot answer the facts that you showed her about President pro-life record so she is still rumbling on. May be she and Saint Dobson can save the nation!
Saint Donna, if you want a real poll of conservatives about how popular Saint Dobson latest political stunt is, check the responses in this thread, they run over 9 to 1 against him.

Any time the NY Times examines an issue dealing with Christians, the agenda is clear...why else would they even give us the time of day. The NY Times is only interested in marganilizing the Christians or doing whatever they can to benefit the Democrats. Their agenda is very apparrent!

Boohoo Saint Donna, you are quoting lies wrapped in lies and distortions from the media.
Did Saint Dobson approve of the last two Supreme Court judges?

"I got a very bad feeling watching Dobson. He acts effeminate,..." If you got a bad feeling about Dobson acting effeminate this should give you nightmares...
To: donnab
Ummmm, could be, except that FT definitely got the better of Dr. Dobson, and I thought FT took the high ground and said he cannot please everyone.

Let’s face it Souter and Stevens vote in lockstep with Ginsburg. They were nominated by Republicans - add O’Connor and Kennedy, fellow travelers. Won’t be fooled again.

Very well stated. If the Republican Party nominates a liberal, they will be the ones "going third party."
In other words, they will be taking the formerly GOP down the path once traveled by the Whigs.
Know any good Whig voters these days?

Fred Thompson is not an abortionist and Dobson is a a damn idiot for calling Thompson “ not a Christian”. Screw Dobson, he is a bitter idiot and you are fooling yourself if you think he will command enough idiots to throw the elections to the baby killers and traitors in the democrat party. The Evangilical Christians are not going to be fooled by this idiot.

Hi JV, good to see you here.
I'd like to add this quote from Reagan biographer Lou Cannon:
"Reagan wanted to succeed. That's what made him stand out from other conservatives of his time. He was a conservative, he had strong beliefs, but he much preferred -- as he often said -- to get some of what he believed accomplished rather than go off the cliff with all flags flying."

"No matter how much you disagree with Rudy if hes the candidate of the party and you sit out the vote, or vote for a third party candidate, knowing full well he or she cant win you are in essence casting a vote for the opposition."
Gee, I was thinking that if you sit out the vote, or vote for the Republican candidate knowing full well he or she can't win you are in essence casting a vote for the opposition. You do realize that if everyone that voted for G.W.H. Bush in 1992 would have voted for crazy ole Ross Perot, Clinton would have never had the chance to use Monica as an ashtray.
IOW, if you are so sure of your premonition, why not simply vote alongside these crazy people of principles and refuse the mullock Clinton her chance at glory.

"But that's not good enough for them -- they won't support that!." I have no idea why you would make such a statement, perhaps you have information regarding the rather diverse groups of pro-life Chrisitans that I am not privy to. Dr. Dobson does not speak for all prolife Christians and I have yet to hear all of them speak in one voice.
For a commentator such as Hannity to push a candidate so early, who is anethema to our core values as is Guliani is bewildering.

Amen
Dobson has to get a grip on reality. Only Fred offers a clear conservative choice...otherwise you choose between Shrillery and Ruby. Neither carries the the flag of Dr. Dobson. Dobson, by his very nature of being out of touch with the reality of politics, must settle for something lest than perfect or we will be governed by commie shrillery. Dobson, get your priorities in order or doom us all!

what is this, a loss-leader to boost their credibility? No, its do anything to get a conservative to run 3rd party to get Hillary elected. Siphon off the votes and Hillary wins with 43% of the vote, just like Bill.
