Rep. Jo Ann Davis, a Virginia Republican first elected to the House of Representatives in 2000, died on Saturday after a long battle with breast cancer, her spokesman said. She was 57.
Davis, who died at her home in Gloucester, Virginia, had a mastectomy after being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005 and was able to return her job, spokesman Chris Connelly said.
"She was back and doing well and then she had a recurrence at the beginning of 2007," he said.
Davis served on the House Armed Services and the House Foreign Affairs committees. Her heavily Republican district along the Chesapeake Bay north of the U.S. Navy base in Norfolk, Virginia, has many Defense Department employees.
"Her very first piece of legislation was a helping hand for the families of service members who have given the ultimate sacrifice in service to their nation," Robert "Mike" Duncan, Republican National Committee chairman, said in a statement. "Our deepest condolences go out to her family and friends."
Davis is survived by her husband, Chuck, two sons and a granddaughter.
Her death will not have an impact on which political party controls the House. Before her death, there were 232 Democrats, 201 Republicans and two vacancies.

Sorry to read about her death.
What I can’t understand is all the money we pump into finding the cures for cancer, diabetes, etc, we really haven’t solved it. Or do we really want to solve (cure) it considering all the money that is pumped into it? Who knows.
What is sad too is we do have people dying every day of these ailments, and all congress wants to chat about is some media entertainer and a phony soldier or if a senator is wearing is f’n pledge pin. Thanks congress, you are the best.
Prayers to Joann Davis and her family.
May she rest in peace. Prayers for her family.
That's because the money is being laundered for Planned Parenthood and HillPAC.
It is simply naive to believe that all problems can be solved by just throwing money (or research) at them. For some, there is a fundamental lack of understanding that must be overcome (think in 1900: building an electronic computer or battling pneumonia.) For others, it is possible there may well be no solution (think: time travel or faster-than-light space travel.) Until the breakthrough comes, it is unknown where on the spectrum of the possible any scientific (or medical) problem lies - such is true about cancerS<<, diabetes, and other diseases. Fundamentally, it is important that we DO the basic research that MIGHT yield those advances, but it is unwise to demand that such research lead to those advances in a given time (or money) frame. It must be recognized that though it’s possible more money (or researchers) might yield results more quickly, that can not be considered certain.
I believe the best approach is simply to devote as much resource as is comfortable to basic research, and be patient with the result. I only get angry about Congress’ behavior in this subject when they act in a manners attempting to shape the outcome of the research, or trying to pick the winners.

I can agree. The sinister part of me believes that some of these diseases have resulted in cures, but shelved for selfish reasons by the powers that be, including the pharmaceutical companies. Hence, the money would stop pouring in.
We are all susceptible to cancer. Lost a couple of young close friends to it who did not drink or smoke. Just happens.
Thanks for the comments.
Yeeks! Why is it lately that it’s all Republicans getting picked off, from scandals to retiring to disease and dying??? Weird!
May her family find comfort. My sympathy to the family and friends of a courageous lady.

Bingo! Various people have found that having “cancer” in your name brings in lots of dough from the public, so they form so-called nonprofit organizations and get rich. Disgusting bloodsuckers preying on the generosity of the American public.
Personally, I don’t think we want to solve it for there’s too much money for drug companies, doctors, hospitals, and all the others with their hands out. Diet would certainly help most diseases but doctors rarely anymore consider it for their patients.
Actually, overall cancer deaths have been dropping by a little over 1% every year for the last ten years. In the 1970s, the five-year survival rate for breast cancer was 75%. Now it’s 88%. So we’re making progress, but it’s slow.
