President George Bush has repeated his belief all religions, "whether they be Muslim, Christian, or any other religion, prays to the same God" – an assertion that caused outrage among evangelical leaders when he said it in November 2003.

My wife had mentioned to the preacher that she was reading through the Bible and was almost to the end of the Old Testament. He asked her what her general thought on it was. She said “how much God loves us”. Most people (without reading the OT) would say the “God of the Old Testament is “vengeful, mean and nasty”.

. . . . .

Actually, a true reading of both the OT and NT reveal God to be faithfully concerned with justice, love, and mercy in both testaments.

As for God’s harsh actions in the OT . . . He is a just God punishing evil people — which is his right as Creator. We all actually deserve death and destruction. The miracle is not only that he doesn’t destroy us all, but that he sacrificed himself to save so many wicked sinners from their own sins.

And remember who taught more about Hell and eternal punishment than anyone else in the Bible — Jesus himself in the NT. Indeed, Jesus came to spare men and women that well-deserved fate.

I take it you did not read the point upthread. The point was that “good persons” that don’t accept Jesus as Saviour will not be saved. You can be a “good person” without Jesus, but you can not go to Heaven.

“And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: GOD MANIFEST IN THE FLESH, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.” (1 Timothy 3:16)

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and THE WORD WAS GOD. (2) The same was in the beginning with God. (3) All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.” (John 1:1-3) “And THE WORD BECAME FLESH, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14)

Yes, Jesus Christ is God, who took on Himself a human body for the purpose of living the sinless life we could not live, and then to be the one and only Sufficient Sacrifice for the sins of every sinner.

“For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins. (5) Wherefore when he (Jesus Christ, God manifest in the flesh) cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, BUT A BODY HAST THOU PREPARED ME: . . .” (Hebrews 10:4, 5)

The Lord Jesus Christ = Jehovah God.

George W. Bush = apostate; phony, with regard to Christianity.

Me thinks Mr. Bush is in search of a legacy. Since he has taken so much flack, perhaps he’s started to believe his critics. By the end, the critics will be the faithful and the faithful will be/are becoming the critics. Count me among the latter, sadly.

Again though, just sophistry prattle.

I have learned the hard way regarding religious discussions on this particular forum.

It's better to let these folks stew in their own juices and stay out of their perpetual hallucinations. It's painfully obvious to any rational person who reads some of these replies that religious wars are fought for the same reasons expressed here. It's also clear why Islam became what it is. It was created as a counter measure out of anger and resentment.

I personally believe that there is indeed a God, but he has a lot of work to do and has not been very successful thus far.

God help God. Puleeeze!

"I believe the God that the Muslim prays to is the same God that I pray to. After all, we all came from Abraham." -GWB

Lincoln?

"And I believe a gift of that Almighty to every man, woman and child is freedom. I really do. And I think people, if given a chance, will seize freedom. And it's liberty and free societies -- not -- they don't have to look like America -- an Iraqi democracy is going to be Iraqi, it's going to reflect Iraqi traditions and Iraqi history.

There are some universal aspects to liberty. One, people can vote, people can express their opinion, people can be in a free press, people ought to be allowed to go to the town square and protest against their government without fear of reprisal. "

...But NEVER violate the will of the "world community" or any UN sanction!

Think about Pelosi's quote that she prays for President Bush often -- gotta wonder who in the world she's praying to

Excellent question. We can be fairly certain to Whom she isn't praying. Or if she is praying to God through our Intercessor, Jesus the Christ, she's trying to tell Him "here's what's wrong and here's how to fix it." Her fixes are just as scary as George's.

I've been guilty of that myself on occasion but at least I hear myself and stop. Right after He hits me over the head with His big Louisville Slugger.

Jesus came to earth in the flesh to die for your sins and my sins. The wages of sin is death. We can not save ourselves. If we die without Christ, we spend eternity in hell. If we die having accepted Christ’s redeeming work on the cross as our free gift from Him to us through His blood - the gift of salvation - we are saved. Take it - or leave it. Which will it be, smoking or non?

The point was that “good persons” that don’t accept Jesus as Saviour will not be saved. You can be a “good person” without Jesus, but you can not go to Heaven

I don't agree with your beliefs, but then I think it is pretentious and, actually, quite silly to spend time trying to determine who God will welcome to heaven. You don't know and you won't know if and until you get there yourself. God sent his Son to teach us how we are to live so that we can be united with Him in heaven, not to teach how how to judge whether someone else will or will not enter the Kingdom of God. I know what God has revealed to me and what He expects of me and that is all that's important. What God has revealed to and expects from others is known only to God and is something that is not necessary for me to know.

BTW, most American Christians, even Evangelicals, believe that those of other religious faiths can go to heaven.

A Beliefnet/Newsweek poll conducted in 2005-AUG asked 1,004 randomly selected American adults about their religious beliefs. 7 One of the questions was: "Can a good person who isn't of your religious faith go to heaven or attain salvation, or not?" Results were:Group Yes, they can attain heaven No, they cannot attain heaven

Evangelical Protestants: 68% 22%

Other Protestants 83% 10%

Roman Catholics 91% 3%

Non-Christians 73% 3%

American population 79% 12%

The margin of error of the Beliefnet/Newsweek poll is ±3 percentage points.

God is the Word.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God John 1:1

Jesus is the Word.

...the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us...John 1:14

God is the first and the last.

I the LORD, the first, and with the last; I am he. Isaiah 41:4

Jesus is the first and the last.

Jesus said, “Fear not; I am the first and the last:” Revelation 1:17

God is Messiah.

...unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder...and his name shall be called... The mighty God, The everlasting Father... Isaiah 9:6

Jesus is Messiah.

The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things. Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he. John 4:25-26

And He said to the thief on the cross, “today you shall be with Me in Glory.”

Ah yes, one who we know was saved. No record either of whether he was baptized or "born again". Somehow I doubt it.

What I’m failing to see is where Jesus says, ‘I am God.”

Jesus is ‘I am’.

Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am. John 8:58

Jesus is the first and the last.

Jesus said, “Fear not; I am the first and the last:” Revelation 1:17

You wrote: “Christians believe in the Holy Trinity as God. The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. One God. Period.”
______________________
My response: One of Christians’ favorite pasttimes is debating whether Jesus was God, part God, part of God, or only a relative. If Jesus was actually God, then he enjoyed praying to himself and, as his he died, talking and questioning himself. He was rather disappointed he had forsaken himself, apparently, as well as more than a little surprised.

And the Moslems believe?

The same as the Jews.

Christians also believe in one God;however, they believe that there are three persons in God.

It seems all three monotheistic religions believe in the same God. In all cases that God is the Creator,He is transcendent and He is omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent.

If one wanted to argue, one could say the one God of the Jews is more similar to the one God of the Moslems than to the Triune God of Christianity.

Bush is just trying to appeal to all those who earnestly want to seek the one true God.

The part he didn't mention is that unfortunately many have been lead to the wrong gate.
