37 months for brother of man who 'exploded' at OU game

By Sara Burnett, Rocky Mountain News October 5, 2007

A Colorado Springs man whose brother blew himself up outside an Oklahoma football game in 2005 was sentenced to 37 months in federal prison today for threatening an FBI agent.

U.S. District Judge Robert E. Blackburn called Thomas C. Hinrichs, who had an AK-47 assault rifle and other paramilitary gear in his car when he was arrested, "a time bomb for our community."

He also said Hinrichs should have a full mental evaluation and treatment while in prison and be under supervised release for three years after he gets out.

Hinrichs, 28, spoke for nearly 30 minutes during the hearing, repeatedly saying he had been the victim throughout his life of extreme violence, and that the FBI agents — whom he referred to as "dogs" — had committed treason by not doing anything to stop the "terrorism" committed against him.

The sometimes rambling statement also touched on Hinrichs' time in the Army, his childhood abuse, the Revolutionary War, the war crimes trials at Nuremberg and discussions he had with Ted Haggard, the disgraced former minister at New Life Church in Colorado Springs. "I've been a basket case my whole life," he said. "I am not normal."

A jury convicted Hinrichs in June of threatening a federal agent in November 2006. According to the FBI, authorities opened a domestic terrorism investigation into Hinrichs the day after his brother, Joel Hinrichs, committed suicide by detonating an explosive device attached to his neck....

The guy is mental. And they think three years locked up in the federal slammer and "treatment" by shrinks employed by the federal government will change his chemical makeup. Yep.

Remind me not to go to any football games in about three years hence.

Unfortunately, thanks to liberal legislation decades ago, full or marginally mentally-handicapped folks cannot be locked away without their own consent. Their families cannot afford treatment or are afraid of them. That's why they walk the streets today.

Nothing much that can be done about it either, given the liberal infiltration and control of just about everything in this country.

What's up with your receivers? They couldn't catch an STD in Bangkok.

What’s up with our linbackers? They can’t defend against the pass at all.

Why is either team trying to run the ball???

"Remember Joel Hinrichs?"

He also went to the same mosque as Zacharias Moussawi, "the 20th highjacker", who used Nick Burg's computer to check his email. And don't forget the OK city bomber was seen with middle eastern suspects by several witnesses. OKC has a lot of interesting history regarding terrorism.

Absolutely no one ever saw him going to that mosque or inside that mosque. Nor did his Paki roommate ever go there.

No, there was a visiting Algerian professor who was in the apartment of some of the friends in their international student apt complex - it was his return ticket home for the next day or so.

This was the interesting part to me.

According to the FBI, authorities opened a domestic terrorism investigation into Hinrichs the day after his brother, Joel Hinrichs, committed suicide by detonating an explosive device attached to his neck.

So there was "no terrorism connection", but the FBI investigated his brother for terrorism.

It sound the like brother is more a few bricks shy of a full load, but that could just be MSM spin to make us feel sorry for him.

Is the “Jockey Strap Saloon” still in Norman? I spent a week at a time on campus for 3 consecutive winters for some industrial seminars, and that was our favorite watering hole...especially with all the nekkid Oklahoma girl entertainers.

4) There's no evidence he frequented mosques or was a Muslim. He had a Pakistani roommate.

Who somehow never noticed that his roommate was making explosives. Apparently quite a large amount of explosives based on how long it took to get them out of the apartment.

Yes, it was. There was a lot of misinfo put out at first and I’m kind of glad it was, because then they had to look into all of it.

I still “vote” for the isolated suicide incident explanation, though.

Dunno - that’s a new one on me. I haven’t been able to get up there (to Norman) in several years now - and I probably would’ve heard of that place if I had gone - but ummm, I wouldn’t have visited it.

"1) It wasn't a bomb vest. It was a backpack in his lap."

You are correct on this one.

"2) There were no nails."

Nails were reported, FWIW. It was one of those "trickled-out" details. As with anything else one reads, its provenance is unknown. Sorry, it was two years ago and I've lost the citation; googling on [Hinrichs, backpack, nails] yields several hits, most leading back to the Northeastern Intelligence Network's posting of this allegation.

"3) Have you ever set foot on a college campus in the last 40 years? Do you have any concept of how many college students have a scraggly beard that just have scraggly beards?"

Sure, but most of those guys don't go shopping for bomb materials or setting off explosive backpacks near crowded venues.

"4) There's no evidence he frequented mosques or was a Muslim. He had a Pakistani roommate."

Again, there were reports--some quite detailed, FWIW--that he had visited the mosque (right around the corner from his apartment) on several occasions.

Unfortunately a complete investigative picture was never released, to my knowledge. And I've had a googlebot set up to snare any mention of Hinrichs for more than two years-- that's how I snared this article.

The thing is...there are probably 10,000 of these guys walking around America today. They are an absolute threat to their family, their community and the population at large. These guys should all be sent off to a permanent facility and kept under lock and key.
