What a way to live (Cathy Buckle in Zimbabwe)

Saturday 29th September 2007

Dear Family and Friends, Standing outside over yet another smoky fire late one afternoon this week, a Go-Away bird chastised me from a nearby tree. I'm sure this Grey Lourie is as fed up of me intruding into its territory as I am of being there - trying to get a hot meal for supper. For five of the last six days the electricity has gone off before 5 in the morning and only come back 16 or 17 hours later a little before midnight. "Go Away! Go Away!" the Grey Lourie called out repeatedly as my eyes streamed from the smoke and I stirred my little pot. My hair and clothes stink of smoke, fingers are yellow and sooty but this is what we've all been reduced to in Zimbabwe. Our government don't talk about the power cuts anymore and don't even try and feed us with lame excuses about how the power is being used to irrigate non-existent crops. We all know it's not true and the proof is there in the empty fields for all to see.

Buckle is part of the problem - a big anti-Ian Smith type who was a Mugabe supporter. Painful to say, but she’s getting what she (thought she) wanted good and hard.

“How does she get food?”
One of her columns from a while ago joked about going to a charity wine auction where a bottle of wine went for 40,000 Zim dollars. Looks like things changed pretty fast.
(I would also recommend that any white in South Africa get out while the getting out is easier. They are going to confiscate the farmers land there, too)

At the time of independence (1980), there were 250,000 Rhodesians of Europan descent in the country, out of a population around 6,000,000. Today, the population is just under 13 million, with whites numbering around 40,000 (acording to Altapedia).

Cathy Buckle has been FR posting on the situation in Zim for many years.

Who needs food? The Church of Scientology just opened a lavish headquarters in downtown Harare.
Operating Thetans don’t need FOOD.They are beyond that mundane item.

I have been reading Cathy Buckles essays here on FR for many years, I have been here since ‘98. I have always wondered why she stayed. Sad situation. I met some white Rhodesians 20+ years ago when they left and moved to Houston. I could never live in a place like that but still Cathy stays. Why?

“...but still Cathy stays. Why?”

Perhaps it is the beauty of the land. Her situation puts me in mind of the Missionary Hymn...remember these lines?

Though every prospect pleases,
And only man is vile:
In vain with lavish kindness
The gifts of God are strown;

A land of pleasing prospects seems to some up Zimbabwe and much of the rest of the world pretty nicely.

No I don’t remember that hymn and she is staying because she likes the scenery? Nope, not good enough.

Maybe she simply can’t get out. It’s possible that she has tried to emigrate, but could not get in. Aren’t the immigration waiting lists here in the U.S. rather lengthy? And slipping across the border might also not work.

I guess I could email her and ask her!

I end with a story about a man who is epileptic and visited the local government hospital for his regular check-up this week. It took four hours before he was seen by a nurse who scribbled in his book that this was a known case and that the hospital pharmacy should dispense his prescription of 90 phenobarb tablets at no charge - as they usually do. This major provincial government hospital had no phenobarb however so the man went to the biggest and busiest pharmacy in the town. They said the phenobarb would cost 1.2 million dollars - this is ten times more than the man's government stipulated minimum monthly wage. I offered to help and took the prescription to another pharmacy. The exact same tablets cost 250 thousand dollars - nearly five times cheaper. When I gave them to the man, his eyes shone with tears and he thanked me - 'I thought I would have to die' he said. What a way to live, and to die.
Holy $hit Cathy. That he die is what is intended by Mugabe and the subtly racist, utilitarian, and Malthusian Global Influencers. The latter won't do anything for Zimbabweans but publicly shed crocodile tears. And I know that many of them surreptitiously send Mugabe laurel leafs for doing his dirty job.

In a traditionally moral world, would it not be far more troubling that there is no loud counter-Malthusian, prolife forces on the globe than any single report Cathy doggedly stays to witness and report on? Dammit.

I guess she won't be eating this

Dang! That's a loaded weapon! You should not be eating it either. Give it to me and I'll dispose of it safely.
