Thousands of protesters are dead and the bodies of hundreds of executed monks have been dumped in the jungle, a former intelligence officer for Burma's ruling junta has revealed.
The most senior official to defect so far, Hla Win, said: "Many more people have been killed in recent days than you've heard about. The bodies can be counted in several thousand."
Mr Win, who spoke out as a Swedish diplomat predicted that the revolt has failed, said he fled when he was ordered to take part in a massacre of holy men. He has now reached the border with Thailand. (more)

Communism again. I’m sure these murders were for the benefit of the people, like the commies everywhere love to say. I am sick.
“With protests quashed and many monasteries empty, fears are growing for those who have disappeared into Burma’s grim prisons in recent days - rights groups say more than 1,000 people, including monks and students, are missing.”

Prayers going up for Myanmar’s freedom martyrs.
Don’t worry! The UN is on the way!!
Burma is a prime example of why the UN is irrelevant. No regime that is held into place by force should have a voice in an international institution of any kind, much less one that putatively exists to promote peace.
Furthermore, more action than just ‘stern words’ should be taken in response to this barbarism.
Short of invasion, there should be a strict economic blockade and safe haven provided on the borders to anyone who wants to leave. I would even go so far as to advocate targeted harassment attacks on their military facilities and assets.
“Thousands of monks detained in Burma’s main city of Rangoon will be sent to prisons in the far north of the country, sources have told the BBC.
About 4,000 monks have been rounded up in the past week as the military government has tried to stamp out pro-democracy protests.”

Thailand Daily has some good coverage, including Thailand NOT allowing refuges into their country.
Anybody want to guess what the laws governing gun ownership in Burma are?
It’s no coincidence that this comes right after the Chinese had a heart-to-heart talk with their Burmese puppets.
Quite a different outcome from the Ferdinand Marcos demonstrations of the 1980’s Phillipines.
Boycott Burma!
(If you weren't already)
“..the UN is irrelevant. No regime that is held into place by force should have a voice in an international institution of any kind..”
The entire UN is a useless and contemptible organization whose headquarters just clutters up the NY skyline. How is it possible that the country that contributes most to its survival, is only allowed one vote?
I kinda thought the Burmese military were kleptocrats, rather than having any discernable politics. Do you have a link to their communist pedigree? Would like to know.
They are lapdogs of the Chinese Communists.
Thousands dead in the massacre of the monks
All Burma threads here...
Thanks ~Pandy~
Yes, but so are the Sudanese to a certain extent. China makes deals with any foreign devil with natural resources.
Do you know the politics of the local rulers? My last hearing was “kleptocrat.”
