TORONTO - Members of Canada's hemophilia community are awaiting a Superior Court judge's verdict Monday in what has been called the worst public health disaster in Canadian history.
"At the end of the day, what's important for us is that justice be done and justice be seen to be done," said John Plater of the Canadian Hemophilia Society.
"So that's really why we're anticipating tomorrow, and getting a hold of her decision and, in particular, the reasons for her decision."
Dr. Roger Perrault, 70, a former national medical director with the Canadian Red Cross, has stood trial with three other doctors and a New Jersey pharmaceutical company for his alleged role in the country's tainted blood scandal that left thousands of Canadians infected with HIV or hepatitis C.
Perrault faces charges of criminal negligence causing bodily harm for allegedly giving hemophilia patients an HIV-infected blood-clotting product in the 1980s and early 1990s.
Plater said he expects a number of people will be present in the Toronto courtroom to witness what he calls, "the end of one of the chapters in this whole saga."
"(The trial) doesn't necessarily impact on everyone directly with hemophilia, but it is one of the worst examples of how the health and safety of hemophiliacs was largely disregarded for some reason," he said.
The doctors and the drug company have pleaded not guilty in the case, and lawyers for three of the accused doctors have alleged the Crown didn't present enough evidence to prove its case.
More than 1,000 Canadians became infected with blood-borne HIV, and up to 20,000 others contracted hepatitis C after receiving tainted blood products.
Closing arguments finished in early September, and the verdict is set to be delivered Monday afternoon by Justice Mary Lou Benotto.

I read through the story, and it does not mention where the tainted blood came from.
What an odd omission, considering that it must have come from SOMEwhere.
Maybe Bill Clinton knows, since he’s touring around “promoting a book” and in the public eye someone can ask him...

The homosexual activists never learned — even after all the needless deaths, trials, lawsuits, etc. When the new Canadian Blood Agency started screening out homosexual donors — gay activists protested loudly. At least, by now, the bureaucrats in charge, and the general public know that it’s better to hurt the feelings of a few homosexual “donors”, than it is to risk the lives of thousands of people who depend on the blood supply.
Wonder if Mr. Clinton will go to jail for this?
I believe there was also some family kickback connection to it as well. It is thought that by making her surgeon general it would also give her cover and provide for a measure of immunity from investigation, as well as an ability to be in a position to influence the investigation.

Wasn’t the American Red Cross involved in this too? Remember, Elizabeth Dole headed the organization in the nineties. Perhaps neither party would benefit from close attention in this case.
Who says justice is blind?
A girl in the high school class behind me had a rare blood disorder that required a transfusion. In late 1981 or early 1982, it was discovered that she had received tainted blood and was HIV-positive. She was brave lady who suffered greatly for 25 years because of this. She died last year.
I think Elizabeth Dole came on board after the tainted blood scandals. Later on, the American Red Cross started its policy of allowing donors to call back later and let them know if the blood should not be used. That way, if folks are giving blood as part of a group, and they don’t want anyone else to know about their situation, they can contact the Red Cross privately.
On January 4, 1999, Elizabeth Dole resigned from her position as head of the world's largest humanitarian relief agency, immediately signaling her sights were focused on something even more challenging in Washington.
"The Red Cross is now as solid as rock and I believe there may be another way for me to serve our country," she told a room full of tearful employees and volunteers as she stepped down. "The Red Cross has been a glorious mission field."
She became president of the American Red Cross in 1991. The organization's first female president since founder Clara Barton, Dole oversaw a budget of $2.1 billion, 32,000 employees, and 1.4 million volunteers. Hired amid a scandal over possible HIV-contamination of the blood supply, she promptly revamped the agency's blood bank procedures. She also solved its budget crisis, raising $3.6 billion for the agency along the way. And stressing the importance of volunteerism, she passed up the first year of her $200,000 salary.
I was right; she came in AFTER all the tainted blood stuff had hit the fan.
Clinton was just coming off of his governorship in 1991-1992 to run for President for the first time. Doncha think the timing of Ms. Dole coming on board for the Red Cross at that time was a little, well, “interesting”?! The tainted blood information didn’t really start to come out until 1997 or 1998 - thanks to the internet and sites like FR. And the story really never took off in the US. Doncha think maybe Ms. Dole, with all her influential media connections, might have had something to do with that story suppression?!
