More than seven years ago, the subject of the Confederate flag came up at Central York High School.
A student originally from Georgia had apparently worn clothing bearing the battle flag of the Confederacy to school, causing problems with some other students who objected. So in March 2000, the school banned Confederate flag from the school, reasoning that its display had a disruptive effect on the education process.
There was no legal challenge to the ban. Had there been, it's likely it would have failed.

The ban was imposed after a disturbance in the Susquehannock High School parking lot involving the flag Thursday. A group of students, upset that someone had taken down Confederate flags from the backs of their pickup trucks, expressed their displeasure by racing through the parking lot, waving the flag and yelling at other students. The disruption was sparked by someone stuffing the flags in the tailpipe of one of the vehicles, Superintendent Thomas Hensley said.
The students - who had been wearing Confederate flag shirts to school - complained to Principal Brian Cashman, who responded by telling them the symbol was banned because it had become disruptive. The students defied Cashman's ban by their display in the school parking lot, Hensley said.

There have been no reports of racial tension at the school, Hensley said.
"This is isolated to eight to 10 youngsters who are just pushing the limits with the Confederate flag," he said.

Sure there haven't. So then, who stuffed the flags into the tailpipes.
While clearly the pro-battle flag students were out of line by raising hell out in the school parking lot after the ban rather than taking the high road and going to court to protest it peacefully, I've got mixed feelings on this ban. There is obviously more to this story than the principal is admitting to, and I'm uncomfortable with any across-the-board ban that does not include Malcolm X, Che Guervara, and Viva lo Mexico symbology as well.
They are children legally and on school property have very limited rights. They are there to learn on our nickel. I figure that if the students have enough spare time to get into this sort of trouble they need a tougher curriculum. The same goes for the college parasites... er I mean students. (Just how does someone go 23 years without ever doing anything useful anyhow?)
We have a local store called Dixie Outfitters that has a tiny Confederate flag as part of its logo. They have been banned from the local school.
bump
would be the same if it was a cresent moon on a flag?
2. We had a kid from Georgia who had the battle flag on his backpack at my private Catholic high school. Nobody complained, we just found it funny that someone would celebrate the memory of a war their ancestors LOST. ;-)
I seriously doubt that there are many black folks who were offended, as you can count all the black folks in Hanover on one hand. It's essentially local C. Pennsylvania hillbillies and some blue collar types who have moved the 50 or so miles north of Baltimore for cheap housing. Methinks these were just tight-assed white kids who were complaining.
No!
Certainly anything at all that’s anti-American should be banned from the public schools.
So somebody pulls down Confederate flags from the back of these kids’ trucks and stuffs them in the tailpipes—gee, sounds like VANDALISM to me—and the kids with the flags get blamed. Sounds like your typical school administrator.

There needs to be a single standard. Personally, I wouldn’t mind if the kids had to wear uniforms like in Asia or in some Catholic schools.
The problem is, though, the left is getting veto power over T-shirts and other such symbols. No one will ban a Che Guevara shirt or a Black Power flag because anyone objecting to them would be called “racist”, and they would be the ones to get in trouble with the administration.
Have you been in a public school lately?
But T-shirts with pics of Che and Charles Manson are ok.
Racist? Hell, I’ve seen a battle flag decal on a car full of blacks in D.C.
If that were the case, 90% of the teacher and administrators would have to be fired....
Well put. I loathe that flag and everything it stands for but I am also uncomfortable with a ban - and IF they are going to ban it they need to ban ALL anti-American and racisst symbols as you pointed out.
Che Guevera was a white man ~ a particularly evil one in fact.
Sure ~ you have to read my statement as one of ADVOCACY.
Things like this are happening in Europe to appease Muslims. The website below has a lot of good examples. About a year or so ago two Swedish high school girls got sent home because they were wearing little pins on their sweaters depicting the Swedish flag. It was deemed disruptive because it angered Muslim immigrants.

Yep, acting without thinking.
(Zero tolerance, don't have to think. Wouldn't want them to get a brain cramp....)
And as I said above, I hate that flag but there is a difference between a small company logo of the flag on a shirt and a T-shirt which sports the flag in a belligerent manner.
