DURHAM, N.C. — Duke University President Richard Brodhead apologized Saturday for not better supporting the men's lacrosse players falsely accused in last year's highly publicized rape scandal. "Given the complexities of this case, getting the communication right would never have been easy," Brodhead said. "But the fact is that we did not get it right, causing the families to feel abandoned when they were most in need of support. This was a mistake. I take responsibility for it and I apologize for it."

If I remember reading on this. This was part of the settlement the guys accused insisted upon when they settled with Duke University. I believe the settlement was some where north of 50 Million.

Attorney General Roy Cooper said that investigators think that she "may actually believe" the many different stories she has told. As for charging Mangum in connection with her claims, Cooper said it was "not in the best interest of justice" to file charges against her. He then made reference to "sealed" records--which apparently regard her mental health--about the woman that convinced prosecutors not to pursue charges against her.

I am re-reading “Until Proven Innocent.” They should make a movie from the book. Do you all have a nominee for Brodhead’s role.

There is a fundamental difficulty. Namely, that the preponderance of objective (</sarcasm>) journalists are villains in the piece. If there is a journalist in a movie, he is always an honest, idealistic crusader. Always. Anything less, and the movie would get mercilessly panned by the reviewers, or - worse yet - ignored. And doomed to failure.

Therefore your script has absolutely nothing to recommend itself to us.

Much of me hopes the Duke lacrosse case will be forgotten someday. But if it is remembered, let’s hope it is remembered the right way: as a call to caution in a world where certainty and judgment come far too quickly.

The central truth, only in the last paragraph. Everything before it was weaseling. If there is anything Broadhead should wish is that this case would be forgotten.

And if there is any one lesson from the case it is that you cannot trust journalism for courage; what you can count on is that journalists will look for a sensational story of evil perpetrated by those whom the public depends on - provided that the perpetrator is not a journalist or someone else who assumes that journalism is the definition of the public interest.
