Bakersfield, Calif. (AP) --
A bid to make English the official language of this San Joaquin Valley city failed after much debate.
The city council also shot down on Wednesday another proposal that would have made clear that Bakersfield is not a sanctuary for illegal immigrants, but it approved a resolution calling on the federal government to enact immigration reform.
After the meeting, opponents of the English-only and the sanctuary resolutions praised the council for making the "morally correct" decision.
. . . Famed labor leader Dolores Huerta, who spoke to city council members, called the defeated resolutions "hateful" and "divisive."

I think it is hateful when illegals help themselves to my tax dollars.
Ya and it is the morally wrong thing for MS. Huerta to
support law breakers.
Funny Nigeria has english as offical language of business and government even though they have numerous native languages. Having an offical language has helped move them toward unity and progress.
I live in Bakersfield. I tried watching the City Council meeting last night but couldn’t hold back my gag reflex.
Bakersfield is gone and is close to becoming unlivable.
Noone cares.
what do you mean by “gone...”
Can you add some description to that?
I know what’s happened to the San Fernando valley where my folks still live in the house I grew up in, but a description of Bakersfield before and after helps.
A few months ago, my childhood friend’s mother (my friend is long gone of course; haven’t seen him in 15 yars) sold her house to move to a retirement community. It was a nice corner house I’d spend countless hours in during the late 1970s. Nicely trimmed, and watered yard. Painted. Clean. Leave it to Beaver etc.
Of course, a Hispanic family bought it—or several families.
Immediately, for some reason, they just began digging up the yard and planting trees and bushes like every 5 feet; randomly and ceased taking care of the grass—just random bushes of various kinds all over the yard. They moved a bench out to the front porch and several of them sit out and stare at the street at night...I guess they don’t have a television, and I doubt they can read.
And several piece of sh!t cars now litter the street (+ a couple in the driveway)...
It’s being converted from a home into a Mexican Barrio city-farm.
At this point, what can you do but laugh. Looks like complete sh!t though. I mean...it looks like SH!T.
The illegals have taken over Bakersfield and are procreating at an exponential rate.
The situation you described is everywhere here. New, nice neighborhoods only stay that way for about 5 years.
There is absolutely nowhere in town that is ‘safe’. We have had home invasion robberies in upscale neighborhoods.
We have a larger than 5 sq mile radius that looks just like Mexico.
The hispanics have moved into all the lower economic sections of town, including what used to be the black neighborhoods. They have run the blacks into other areas.
Our surrounding small towns are all 97% hispanic now.
We have gang wars on our streets.
Everyone we talk to is looking at going somewhere else.
Specific enough for you?
Spoken like a good Marxist.

Like where? Where can we go anymore? I live in the Valley, the same area the other Freeper was talking about. The same things are happening here as where you are. Where can any of us go where it's still nice and the invasion isn't happening, and it isn't likely to happen in the future? (Other than expensive, gated communities?) I wish someone would tell me.
The “Death of the West” as Patrick Buchannan wrote about is proceeding rather quickly!
When you die you’re going straight to heaven because you’ve already served your hitch in hell. BAKERSFIELD!
Where’s the fence?
In order for an issue about a language to be "divisive" there has to be a second language in question to divide the existing speaking pool. Lacking the influx of illegals, there wouldn't be said second language. It is therefore the Spanish language preference of Ms. Huerta and her ilk that is divisive.
Glad to clear it up.
West Virginia, northern Wisconsin, North Dakota, etc.
I would be laughing at your exchange if I weren’t fuming because I’ve come to hate the spanish language.
Yep...I definitely get it now, thanks. Wow...sounds like a nightmare, but I know how it is.
But as Navarrette says, they aren’t going anywhere. Everyone needs to be reminded that they aren’t going anywhere. We need to get it into our heads that they aren’t going anywhere. And in time, people may find themselves with the understanding that no one is going to fix this problem for us until we begin to revolt against it.
