GILBERT, Ariz. -- A 21-year-old woman three months pregnant attacked a suspected purse snatcher with a pocketknife as he fought with her on a dark Gilbert sidewalk, police said.
Investigators said the man, Filemon Del Hoyo, 22, was transported to Scottsdale Osborne Hospital with severe lacerations.
Officers said the ordeal began as the woman was walking home from an Applebee's restaurant near Gilbert Road and Baseline Road around 12:40 a.m. Thursday.
She told police she noticed a vehicle in a parking lot that looked suspicious by the way it was parked.
"There was a guy kind of hidden in the bushes," she said.
"It looked like he had something," the victim said.
Police said Del Hoyo ran towards her and asked for a cigarette.
"I pulled knife out and pulled the blade open," she told CBS 5 News.
"He asked me if I had a phone. I just kept walking," she said.
Moments later, officers said he grabbed her arm.
"I had my arm through my purse. He put his arm through the purse and he was pulling me while swinging at me with his other arm," she said.
The woman said she started swinging her knife.
"I felt like after I had slashed so many times that he still wouldn't let go. I felt like he was after more than my purse," she said.
Needing the rent money in her purse, the woman said she wouldn't give up.
"I was in fear for my life and my child," she said.
Finally, one last slashing and the injured and bleeding man ran to a getaway vehicle. The woman, still clutching her purse, followed and was able to get a license plate number.
Minutes after calling 911, officers located the vehicle in the area of 8th Street and Gilbert Road in Mesa. Del Hoyo was taken into custody at the scene and rushed to the hospital.
Investigators said they are working to determine whether or not Del Hoyo is affiliated with any criminal street gangs.
The woman said she is now rethinking baby names.
"Definitely going to be a hero baby," she said.
"That's what kept me fighting, knowing that it wasn't just me," the woman said.
working to determine whether or not Del Hoyo is affiliated with any criminal street gangs.
And I am left wondering if he is one of those fine undocumented workers from somewhere south of the U.S.
That's probably just my "racist" thinking but I really don't give a rat's ass.
Sheriff Joe also has no problems checking with ICE for citizenship status.
Yep poor bastard, first he gets knifed by a pregnant girl, then gets to wear the pink jumpsuit. Sheriff Joe rocks
Geez I hope Johnny Sutton doesn’t get involved in this case. I’d hate to see this pregnant woman go to prison for 10 or 12 years for hurting Mr. Del Hoyo !!!
“”I was in fear for my life and my child,” she said.”
Key words here, say it loud and say it often... even if you are not pregnant.
Del Hoyo is spanish
for “cut up punk Bitch”
Johnny Sutton is english for
“ok GW,I’ll do whatever it takes to further the NAU” !!!
You should voluntarily submit to diversity training and vow to acknowledge your societal privilege. Non PC thinking will not be tolerated at my university. These poor undocumented immigrants deserve our deepest gratitude and every privilege not normally granted to the rest of us.
So in the future she should just hand her purse over to anyone who asks for it?
That’s probably just my “racist” thinking but I really don’t give a rat’s ass.

Naw. THat’s not too terribly racists. You could’ve said what I was thinking...That the victim AND the perp are probably both illegal aliens.
“Filemon Del Hoyo, 22, was transported to Scottsdale Osborne Hospital with severe lacerations.”
Horray!
re-read it:
“I felt like after I had slashed so many times that he still wouldn’t let go. I felt like he was after more than my purse,” she said.
I'll save my "hooray" for when they transport him to the morgue and the crematorium.
It’s posts like #7 that make my time on FR bearable. God bless you. Now I have to go clean up. When you get old you tend to dribble when laughing.( and most other things too)
When you get as old as I am, you just tend to dribble..
‘nuff said..
After watching the linked video I would have to conclude that the brave young woman is not an illegal.
She also appears to be quite aware of how to deal with this stinking legal system by uttering the correct phrase:
"I was in fear for my life and my child,"
Smart girl.
Good for the woman. But I have to question the wisdom of rushing the perp to the hospital. Couldn't they have found him a nice warm jail cell and waited until he was Mirandized and called his lawyer?
There was, after all, always the chance that he could have given a confession without proper legal counsel.
For the future I recommend that the lady buys and carries it on her person.
