The computer circuit board on Star Simpson's sweatshirt that security thought may have been a bomb at a Boston airport isn't out of character for her, according to the Maui woman's background, school affiliations and online supporters.
But her mother, Stephanie Simpson, said it may have been a mistake because Star used the shirt the day before on career day at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and when she went to pick up her boyfriend at the airport. "It was just sleepyheads. She must have been just asleep to the fact of where she was going," Stephanie Simpson said.

Hmmmm...well, then, what about the lump of playdoh in each of her hands?
no sympathy for this girl...she knew what she was doing...
jail time should set her straight!!!!
She’s obviously a quick thinker, making up a story that fast. I don’t buy the sleepyhead story or the art story either. Maybe Hillary! can give her a job after graduation. She sounds like she’d fit right in with the implausible story crew.
I’ll say it was a mistake.
nope, it’s not a bomb - but it could be the trigger device -while the exposive parts being inside the shirt....BTW, 9 volt is more than enough to trigger. Also LEDs are often used to indicate status - armed, etc.
It COULD be a detonation device - so therefore the treatment she got was indeed justified.
If you think YOU can tell from 5 feet if a person has a bomb or not, then I suggest you volunteer for bomb disposal duty - because after all, just looking at it you can tell if it’s a bomb, right?
Come on, think about betting your LIFE on your 5 second inspection from 5 feet away....
I have a permit to carry in the state of Minnesota. Concealed or open. I can legally carry at the MSP airport, as long as I don’t try to go through security with it.
I choose not to.
Basic common sense.
Naw he just looks like another geek in mandatory plaid. Pocket protector is stashed on the side.
Jail...for having primitive circuitry stitched to the outside of a sweatshirt. Sorry, over reactive rent-a-cops who have yet to prove that they're even slightly useful aside from putting hours of wasted time into every flight, a trillion dollars for technology that's run by the lowest qualified candidates, seeking to 'intercept' meaningless items and make invasive searches of people all in the name of 'safety.'
That one of them could force anyone into a prison is horrible.
I wonder how many cell phones have been used for detonation devices in Iraq and Israel? If I'm going to be paranoid something, a piece of breadboard and a nine volt worn openly on the front of a sweatshirt is not going to be even among the top ten, compared to a common cell phone.
how did she get into MIT in the first place?
You havent spent much time at the school.
and kick old Star's mother's hind end for me. If she gives you any grief, tell her to...
I'm surprised at the number of posters that think it looked like a bomb.
It looks nothing like a bomb to me.
Good grief. She’s dating Robin Williams?
Part of the problem here is that when a gate attendant asked her what it was, she gave no answer, turned around, and left the airport. The combination of the weird-looking device and that non-response to an inquiry about it warranted an “assume the worst” response. She was acting like someone who was deliberately testing the waters or trying to create a distraction.
I agree. That’s terrorism, and she should face the appropriate charges. Stupid ****.
The back of the shirt was inscribed “Socket to me” “Course VI”. Since the ‘device’ was a breadboard—which is full of little sockets for easily connecting circuit components for testing—the shirt was an ad for an electrical engineering booth or event at the career fair.
The story checks, but maybe you have to be a geek to understand why.
I guess Boston is a little touchy after having been the launching pad for the 9/11 attacks: first the lite-brights as ‘bombs’ nonsense with the Aqua Teen Hunger Force promotion, now this.
Actually, she was acting like a geek with mild Asperger’s syndrome.
That's not a bomb, it's a pair of shoes with a fuse!
Yes, I can see where law enforcement might be a little nervous about something like that. I mean, if they didn’t do anything & it turned out to be something, then they would catch hell for it. If she was asked about the shirt and she didn’t explain what it was & turned to leave, it makes it doubly suspicious.
If I saw a kooky looking girl like her at the airport and wearing a shirt like that, it would make me a little nervous. Most of us aren’t computer geeks, so you can understand where we might think these things. You can’t afford to make mistakes when it comes to stuff like that and this STUPID girl should have known better. If she didn’t before, she sure does now.
