'Fake bomb' was mistake, according to Maui mom
STAR-BULLETIN (Honolulu) ^ | September 22, 2007 | Gene Park

The computer circuit board on Star Simpson's sweatshirt that security thought may have been a bomb at a Boston airport isn't out of character for her, according to the Maui woman's background, school affiliations and online supporters.

But her mother, Stephanie Simpson, said it may have been a mistake because Star used the shirt the day before on career day at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and when she went to pick up her boyfriend at the airport. "It was just sleepyheads. She must have been just asleep to the fact of where she was going," Stephanie Simpson said.

It would appear that among all of the course offerings in schools all over this country, common sense isn’t offered.

I’m still trying to figure out what was so “artistic” about this shirt this stupid girl was wearing.

I’m sorry, but I just don’t buy her story.

The problem with this chick is that she is several french fries short of a happy meal.

Send mom the bill for her daughter's "mistake".

Then maybe the parents should change the kids name from "Star" to "Stupid".

What hippy-dippy mom doesn't quite say is that "Star" slept in the shirt and had been wearing the skanky, crusty thing 24/7 for days....... /s

“It was just sleepyheads.”

Really, why did she have play doh in her hands?

"Hopefully she got the crap scared out of her..."

She doesn't look too scared in this photo, and the so-called boyfriend looks more like he'd be her father.

"Star Simpson, 19, left court after her arraignment yesterday in Boston. Riding with her was boyfriend Tim Anderson."

That's no bomb. It's a common Duracell battery wired to a breadboard with LEDs.

Of course, the TSA would probably have fewer problems if she was carrying a notebook computer, PDA, or cell phone. Those sorts of devices are much more likely to have been converted into bombs.

The reality is that TSA needs to provide more advanced training in recognition of bombs than "anything with a wire is a bomb." As for common sense, this girl should have thought before walking into an airport with a breadboard, wires, LEDs, and a Duracell battery taped to a sweatshirt. She was just asking for trouble.

Sounds like maybe mommy has made excuses for her daughter’s stupid behavior before. And if she’s too silly from sleep to think about where she was going, how did she get into MIT in the first place?

What does it say that this girl thought a fake bomb was art?

Sorry — I’ve had four 19 year olds and their heads were used to think — which they did.

This girl may have the intelligence to get into MIT, but she sure doesn’t know how to think.

Aside from the stupidity of what she did, her 15 minutes of fame is sure to follow her.

At 19 you either have it or you don’t...

She went to "career day" with a shirt that looked like it had a bomb strapped to it? What kind of "career" is this moron considering?

Look up a picture of the actual gadget. No one not a moron could realistically mistake it for anything but what it was, some flashing leds on a prototyping board. If a TSA staffer asked to inspect it, that would have made sense. Pulling guns on her was the act of dolts and cowards. Security theater.

If this gadget justified holding the girl at gunpoint then so do ipods, cell phones, cameras and hearing aids.

One time years ago I had to rig up a tester for a large quantity of computer power cords, to see if they had the right polarity, opens, shorts, etc. I rigged up some LEDs on a Radio Shack breadboard like that, using the LEDs as both indicators and as steering diodes at the same time. The tester enabled us to zip through the hundreds of suspect cords in a single afternoon, and it didn’t look very much different than that thing. :o)
