Not surprisingly, Senator Hillary Clinton has solid leads over all Republican hopefuls in the nations largest state. In the battle for Californias 55 Electoral College votes, Clinton leads Rudy Giuliani by ten points (50% to 40%) and Fred Thompson by eleven (50% to 39%). The Democratic frontrunners lead is twice as big when matched against John McCain (54% to 35%) or Mitt Romney (53% to 31%).

What, you think he's kidding?!
I'm afraid you overstate the redness of the golden state. I live on the coast south of SF. There is a slightly red tinge around Monterey because of all the retired and active military. Other than that the coast is rat heaven from Big Sur to the Oregon border. Look at the makeup of the congressional reps in the greater bay area. On second thought, don't. It would make you sick.
Maybe if you took out L.A. and S.F. the state would be slightly republican, but to be sure you would also have to remove some or all of the following: Oakland, Berkeley, Sacramento, San Jose.
California Camelot - Is Mrs. Schwarzenegger the most powerful woman in America?
IN AN AGE where women are ascending to the top of American life, Maria Shriver Schwarzenegger is the unlikely, perhaps unwilling, leader of the pack. Most of all, Californias first lady is redefining what it means to be a powerful woman in ways that are unique, feminine and utterly modern.
In the era of Hillary Clinton and Nancy Pelosi, of Angela Merkel in Germany and Segolene Royal in France, it is Maria Shriver who might, in the end, be the most powerful of them all. Without a doubt, her husband, by way of his movie career, and his embrace of the green cause is more well known and admired around the world than any of the others. Now, for better or worse, his future is inextricably tied to his wife.
(snip)
Arnold Schwarzenegger, born in Austria, Green Governor, Terminator and Newsweek cover boy, is probably the most popular politician in the United States right now. ... But no matter how popular he is, barring an amendment to the U.S. Constitution, Californias governor cannot ever run for the job of president of the United States. His wife can, though. Maria Shriver was born in Chicago 51 years ago. What if she ran for president as part of a 21st century power couple?
How is the drive going in CA to get the proposal on the ballot to give out Electoral Votes per Congressional District rather than winner-take-all?
Can anyone give us an update?
The very, remote possibility of that has the Dems crapping down both legs.
I wonder what the answer would be if they asked:
“Would you be willing to pay more taxes to pay for health insurance for illegal aliens”?
They just started collecting signatures two weeks ago.
They have until 2/4/08 to gather 433,971 signatures.
Sadly, no.
I see Rudy is working that magic hat trick he and other supporters claim can turn blue to red. A 1% difference in support. Wow. Sure is electable.
Thanks.
“Oh, and the Californians would have to stay there, too.”
We might as well stay here, regardless of how much we want to escape this liberal hellhole. When the folks in conservative utopia find out where we came from, they’ll just think we’re fruits, nuts and flakes, just like the folks in the land we fled from!
My apologies for those states suffering from migratory California-itis. We had nothing to do with the insanity that prevails here and spreads elsewhere.
I’m not a big fan of that initiative. I think it is shortsighted and could *really* screw stuff up.
If we think gerrymandering is bad now, just wait until each CD counts as an electoral vote!
I suspect those pushing some (not all) of the redistricting initiatives are already trying to game that system.
“Aah, California. Where no one EVER polls Republicans. Were out here, but we never hear from the pollsters. Wonder why?”
Same here. Not even once.
Sanity and morality are severely frowned upon here.
It’s a lonely place for a conservative. : (

I see dead people! (Signing things)
“Other than that the coast is rat heaven from Big Sur to the Oregon border.”
However four of the most southern coastal counties voted Republican: San Diego, Orange, Ventura and San Luis Obispo.
Yeah, but they're dead Republicans, so it's okay. /s

I kind of feel like if the original system is tampered with, it will backfire somehow. I’m not too sure about this, but if it scares the dems that bad, it might be a good thing.
I figure the dems are going to fight this any way they can.
The two cities and their largely immigrant, displaced east coast populace.
