“While there are a lot of people who think that we’re freaks”
Freaks.
That is sooooo wrong. Funny as heck, but soooo wrong.
I have no words.
do they borrow books in libraries...?
Fascinating post...thanks.
A couple of things from their experience stick out for me:
They are re-learning why modern inventions like washing machines and refrigerators are popular.
They may not realize that all of today’s “inventions” have given them the opportunity to partake in this experiment. RE: without modern day jobs and infrastructure, the story would be different.
"Funny thing, though, they're all wearing clothes pins on their noses," she continued, "Is this some new fashion trend I haven't heard about since I fell off the face of the earth?"
That probably happened when the author of this article left for his air-conditioned cubicle...wondering why he shook Beavan’s hand when they met!
In a free country, people should be free to live whatever lifestyle suits them. It’s certainly no skin off my nose if these people want to live this way. Live and let live.
“It may be a worthwhile experiment in the eyes of some, or a total waste of time by a tree hugger for others. But whatever you think of the Beavans, somehow when you leave their flat it feels like there is only one option - to walk down the nine flights of stairs.”
It would save time to use the balcony exit.
This is a rehash of an even lamer article on the same couple; the key tie-in between the two is the non-use of toilet paper.
There must be a reason why this aspect of the whole thing is so evocative.
" Colin is planning to write a book about his year as No-Impact Man - his publishers are looking at sustainable ways of publishing. "
Shouting in the public square? (You better not disturb the animals...)
Look at me! Look at me! I’m a freaking Moron!!!
San Angeles?
Wew! Every time I read one of these articles, I try once again to increase my carbon footprint to offset their offset. I'm running out of lights to leave on and the time I have to spend in the shower is cutting in to my sleep time (with the AC cranked and my electric blanket on all night!).
I totally forgot about that movie. Why did you have to go and remind me? Taco Bell, anyone?
Little does he know that jar used to belong to Howard Hughes.
I have a few more words to add myself...feeling really sorry for their little girl, Isabella. Lack of hygiene, refridgeration, etc., lead to high mortality rates generations ago. Where is CYS? If a welfare mother loses electric service to her apartment, I am sure she is investigate. So why not these putzs? Classism? Racism? Hmmmmm.
Thank goodness for the American medical system which reduces their (and our) chances of getting and passing on the diseases, etc. Thank goodnss this is only their “experiment”.
Not because they don't want to, ya freak!!
