The man suspected of killing one Miami-Dade cop and wounding three others Thursday morning in a shootout in south Miami-Dade was cornered and shot dead in a Pembroke Pines apartment complex sometime before midnight, a law enforcement source told The Miami Herald. Miami-Dade police would not confirm the information about suspect Shawn Sherwin LaBeet, but scheduled a news conference for 12:30 a.m. at its headquarters in Doral. After receiving a tip Thursday evening that LaBeet was hiding in an apartment complex in Pembroke Pines, Miami-Dade sent its SWAT team, the source told The Herald.

Absolutely ... it’s truly a bizarre tale. Was it terrorism, a caught and drugged out crook, or a cop-hating with a purposeful police hatred and death wish?

IMO .. I think you’d have to be chemically altered outta your mind, no matter what else the motive.

Back in the 1970s, when they built Cemetary, er, Century Village, Pembroke Pines went from cattle ranches to "New York South", with a large Jewish Democratic community known as the "Condo Commandos" who proceeded to dominate local politics.

Its become more multiethnic/religiously diverse since the 1990s, and there has been some influx of Cuban American Republicans, but they are still way outnumbered by the crazy leftist dems.

Basically, its a suburb of Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Not as nice as Weston, but still far from a dump (aside from the politics).

Unfortunately, as I pointed out in my other post, the politics remain dominated by the Lib Dem Socialist transplants from New York.

With the ethnoreligious changes occurring in Broward (ie the Jewish Dems either moving up to Palm Beach or going to the cemetary) we will need to get the upper/upper middle class Venezuelans and Colombians registered in order to have any influence in Broward, which has been a liberal cesspool since the late 70s/early 80s.

Not too much of a problem in my neighborhood -- my federal rep is Lincoln Diaz-Balart, and my state rep is a Republican (or was, actually, he just died from cancer earlier this week). This is because west Pines and west Miramar have a lot of Cuban-Americans, who as you know are mostly a Republican lot.

I would not necessarily bet on the Venezuelans and Colombians becoming Republicans simply because of Chavez and FARC. In fact, most of the Venezuelans I know dislike Bush even though they hate Chavez.

Frankly, I don't think Broward will ever change . . . .

Bush will be gone soon. The Dems will no longer have him as "the face" of the GOP.

I don't see Broward (or Palm Beach) ever changing politically for the better. Frankly, I see the entire country lurching toward the left for at least the next quarter century. :-(

you know that the perp stands little to no chance of being "just wounded" or even captured

We tolerate this kind of execution, it serves a useful purpose, but it borders on murder. The lack of due process means mistakes.

Half the country keeps trying to vote in a socialist dictator and they will succeed some day. Having a police force ready-trained to murder makes me nervous.

This is terrible.

All the good times that are lost to poor Kevin, such as impregnating women, killing other cops, blowing some snow, and collecting welfare.

Scum of the earth, meet the earth for your well-deserved dirt nap.

4 Arrested For Helping Suspected Cop Killer (Shawn LaBeet)
Abstract: Miami-Dade police have arrested four people in connection with the shootings of four Miami-Dade police officers, one of whom died. Three of those arrested are charged with aiding the suspected cop killer Shawn LaBeet.

LaBeet was wanted in fight over drugs
Abstract: Shawn LaBeet had been wanted in Broward County for five years -- on felony charges stemming from a fight over drugs in which his girlfriend was shot in the thigh.

Cops test suspect's gun in deputy's death
Abstract: The Broward Sheriff's Office is testing a 9mm firearm found with dead cop-killer Shawn LaBeet to see if it was the same weapon used in the still-unsolved shooting of Sgt. Chris Reyka, sources told The Miami Herald.

Assault-Weapon Attacks on Rise in Miami area where officer slain
Abstract: The spray of bullets that killed one Miami-Dade County police officer and hurt three others this week came from something increasingly common on this city's streets.Once solely found in the hands of soldiers, high-powered assault weapons like the one believed to have been used in Thursday's attack are becoming the guns of choice for gang members and other violent criminals. And when they are aimed at officers on patrol, there's little authorities can do to escape. "It's almost like we have water pistols going up against these high-powered rifles," said John Rivera, president of the Dade County Police Benevolent Association. "Our weaponry and our bulletproof vests don't match up to any of those types of weapons."

Wounded Officer Thankful Suspect is Dead
Miami Herald by Casey Woods
Fri, Sep. 14, 2007
http://www.miamiherald.com/news/breaking_news/story/237726.html

Miami-Dade police Officer Jody Wright was relieved Friday to hear the man who destroyed her leg, pierced by a bullet from an assault-style weapon, had been shot and killed, her father said. 'I walked into the room this morning and the only thing she said to me was, `Thank God he's gone' '' Wright's father, Dennis Dalley, said at a news conference at Jackson Memorial Hospital. ``It may sound hard, but I'm glad about what happened [to Shawn LaBeet]. He would have done it again.''

Doctors who operated on Wright's leg said that the bullet destroyed 80 percent of the bone in a six-inch span below Wright's knee. ''This is exactly the type of wound you would see in war,'' said orthopedic surgeon Dr. Gregory Zych, who operated on the officer. Because the bullet came from a high-powered gun, it had a quarter-size entrance wound and a grapefruit-size exit wound on the inner part of her leg, Zych said. Wright is in stable condition and is not currently at risk of losing her lower leg. Zych said that rehabilitation of Wright's knee would take at least a year, and that it was too early to talk about whether the wound would end her career as a police officer.

Wright, 31, was among three officers injured during the shootings Thursday. Officer Jose Somohano, a former schools police officer, died. A blood drive at South Miami City Hall for the three surviving officers was ongoing Friday. South Miami and Community Blood Bank officials extended the drive to 9 p.m. because of overwhelming response.

== OTHER RELATED LABEET INFO ===

Miami-Dade Police Director Robert Parker told reporters about 12:30 a.m. Friday that Labeet was wearing body armor when he was cornered in Pembroke Pines. ''He was armed with a loaded weapon and had additional ammunition,'' Parker said. ``He had the mind-set of surviving a confrontation with law enforcement officers.'' Police learned of LaBeet's whereabouts late Thursday and sent a special team of heavily armed officers to the condo complex. When the team arrived, they spotted, chased and cornered LaBeet by the apartment complex pool.
