Better the unanswered questions then for this guy to get out due to a lawyer or judge being inept.

Wounded Officer Thankful Suspect is Dead
Miami Herald by Casey Woods

Miami-Dade police Officer Jody Wright was relieved Friday to hear the man who destroyed her leg, pierced by a bullet from an assault-style weapon, had been shot and killed, her father said. 'I walked into the room this morning and the only thing she said to me was, `Thank God he's gone' '' Wright's father, Dennis Dalley, said at a news conference at Jackson Memorial Hospital. ``It may sound hard, but I'm glad about what happened [to Shawn LaBeet]. He would have done it again.''

Doctors who operated on Wright's leg said that the bullet destroyed 80 percent of the bone in a six-inch span below Wright's knee. ''This is exactly the type of wound you would see in war,'' said orthopedic surgeon Dr. Gregory Zych, who operated on the officer. Because the bullet came from a high-powered gun, it had a quarter-size entrance wound and a grapefruit-size exit wound on the inner part of her leg, Zych said. Wright is in stable condition and is not currently at risk of losing her lower leg. Zych said that rehabilitation of Wright's knee would take at least a year, and that it was too early to talk about whether the wound would end her career as a police officer.

Wright, 31, was among three officers injured during the shootings Thursday. Officer Jose Somohano, a former schools police officer, died. A blood drive at South Miami City Hall for the three surviving officers was ongoing Friday. South Miami and Community Blood Bank officials extended the drive to 9 p.m. because of overwhelming response.

Miami-Dade Police Director Robert Parker told reporters about 12:30 a.m. Friday that Labeet was wearing body armor when he was cornered in Pembroke Pines. ''He was armed with a loaded weapon and had additional ammunition,'' Parker said. ``He had the mind-set of surviving a confrontation with law enforcement officers.'' Police learned of LaBeet's whereabouts late Thursday and sent a special team of heavily armed officers to the condo complex. When the team arrived, they spotted, chased and cornered LaBeet by the apartment complex pool.
