This story turned out to be a bogus one... fooled most everyone in the media, not just WMD. The video in question was manufactured- not captured- by an ex-con who had traveled to Afghanistan who was creating "fake but accurate" crap to feed the media in exchange for money. One report said you could even hear his own voice in the film as one of the alleged terrorist trainers though that's not confirmed. I think it was this video he sold first to FOX as real.
The convicted fraudster had been in the military in the past - briefly- and hadn't acquited himself in shall we say an honorable manner. So he moved on and capitalized on his knowledge of Rangers jargon, etc, to impress the mediots. He had befreinded a well known author and managed to fool the guy into thinking he was involved in the hunt for Bin Laden [I think the book that resulted was by the same name]and this gave him artificial credibility for use in conning more people. The author said he was warned by real special forces people about the guy but "didn't listen" because he thought he knew him well enough.
Impress them he did, apparently- the fake was hired as a consultant by most of the MSM including FOX, though as I recall CNN didn't fall for it. Eventually though people tired of him until the only press interested in him was CBS. He did have a Time reporter tagging along with an aparent helper who worked for National Geographic, and they even took along a script making the ex con wanna-be merc look like some sort of hero with the intention of selling a book or perhaps a movie based on preplanned exploits. He fooled a lot of people overseas into thinking he was legit- at least temporarilty- but also made an ass of himself soon enough to get his mug posted on wanted posters in Kabul.
He started kidnapping Afghans off the street claiming they were terrorists while CBS camermen filmed the action. He turned one over to the gove who was soon after found not to be as advertised and so was let go. This self-promoter played up to the media and did mock interrogations and has been accused of torturing some of the people he nabbed... finally he was caught, CBS camera men and all, by the new government.
He was pulling this crap off at a time CBS was pushing the Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison BS and the forged TANG memos so I suspect that CBS knew far more than they admitted to about the guy and his activities. I suspect they may have been writing his scripts...
He and his sidekick from National Geo ended up getting hefty jail terms from Karzai's government over their private prison escapade. A pity Dan Rather didn't get probed.

Actually, I’m not. Around here (Pittsburgh area), most burglaries occur in the “better” neighborhoods — upper middle to upper class areas. But I guess the burglary statistics are different elsewhere as you and others have pointed out. I don’t know the neighborhood where the burglary surveillance was set up (and where the shooting occurred) — so I didn’t want to jump to conclusions. I would defer to those who know the neighborhood in question.
My basic point though was not to judge the neighborhood by the suspect. It’s wrong to do so, and I know about that from my own personal experience. I still live in the neighborhood where I grew up. My house is in a single family home section and my street and a few around it are not bad, but very close by are section 8 homes and public housing. Even though my immediate neighborhood is ok, I have difficulty getting a cab or hiring a tradesman to do any work around my home. As soon as they know where I live, they decline. It’s a shame. I hope to sell my house within the next year, but I won’t get even a fraction of what I paid for it. The hosue is decent, but the neighborhood has a bad reputation. Nothing I can do about that.

CUTLER BAY, Fla. — A gunman opened fire on four Miami-Dade County police officers during a traffic stop Thursday, killing one and injuring the other three. Police killed the suspect hours later, authorities said.
Officers from police departments across South Florida had been searching for 12 hours for the suspect, who investigators identified as Shawn Sherwin Labeet, 25. Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Alvarez said Labeet was found shortly before midnight Thursday in a Pembroke Pines apartment complex about 30 miles north of the initial shooting scene. "There was an exchange of gunfire and the subject was shot and killed," Alvarez said. He said the family of the dead officer was informed of Labeet's death.
"They asked us for one thing," Alvarez said. "They asked us to catch the subject. Well, I'm happy to report that shortly before midnight, we found the subject." Alvarez identified the dead officer as Jose Somohano, 37, a married father of two. Another officer, Jody Wright, 31, underwent several hours of surgery to repair her severely injured leg. The other two officers were treated and released.
The officers were conducting burglary surveillance when they stopped the man because he was driving a car erratically, police spokeswoman Linda O'Brien said. The man opened fire with a high-powered weapon without warning and fled. It was not immediately clear whether the officers returned fire. Labeet, who may have been wearing a bulletproof vest, fled in his car, which was found abandoned 5 miles away, officials said. An AK-47 assault rifle was found inside, Alvarez said. It wasn't immediately known if it was the weapon used in the shooting. Labeet's girlfriend had earlier given officers the name of another man, Alvarez said. Investigators wasted several hours looking for him before he came forward hundreds of miles away in Jacksonville, hearing that he was wanted. He was not involved in the shooting.
"I'm sure she'll be facing some charges," Alvarez said of Labeet's girlfriend. Several schools were locked down during the search in Cutler Bay, in suburban Miami. Two other officers were shot separately last month in neighboring Broward County. One was killed, the other badly injured.

Killed Dade officer known for `exemplary job’

Officer Jose Somohano was a former schools police officer who became a hard-charging Miami-Dade cop dedicated to doing his job well, his colleagues said.
He was gunned down Thursday at age 37 on the streets he was sworn to protect. He leaves behind a wife and two children.
‘’He’s an awesome guy, great cop. Not a bad word I can say about him. I’m lost for words, I’m hurting that bad,’’ said Miami-Dade schools Detective J.T. Messenger, who worked with Somohano in the schools police department. ``It’s a sad, sad day.’’
Hired by Miami-Dade in October 2003, Somohano was assigned to the Cutler Ridge district, where he was working when Thursday’s assault occurred.
‘’He did an exemplary job. Anything you asked him to do, he did it,’’ said Maj. Carlos Garcia, who a few months ago promoted Somohano from uniform patrol to crime prevention detail.
Miami-Dade schools Sgt. Willie Tagle, a former colleague, called Somohano ``a hard worker, professional at all times, diligent in everything he did.’’
Three other Miami-Dade officers, all assigned to Cutler Ridge, were injured in the attack. Two — Christopher Carlin, 34, and Tomas Tundidor, 37 — were treated at hospitals and released by day’s end. The third, Jody Wright, 31 — remained in Jackson Memorial Hospital after hours of surgery.
The assault left the department reeling. ‘’The Cutler Ridge district is torn right now,’’ Garcia said.
Wright’s father Dennis Dalley, keeping vigil at the hospital, said his daughter had been determined to work in law enforcement and knew the risks.
‘Last month, I spoke to her about how she’d feel about getting hurt and she said to me, `I made the decision and what it will be . . . it will be,’ ‘’ Dalley said.
‘’She talked about wanting to be a CIA officer and figured she had to start somewhere. I supported her knowing that she was very disciplined since she was a child,’’ he said.
He learned the news of his daughter’s injury in Jamaica and flew to Miami on Thursday. ‘’I support her,’’ Dalley said. ``It’s a job that has to be done. There are crimes here. There are crimes in Jamaica. And they need to be stopped.’’
Hired in June 2005, Wright had been assigned to uniform patrol in the Cutler Ridge district. Born in Jamaica, she moved back and forth between the island and Miami and has a Shih Tzu named Marley, after singer Bob Marley, her father said.
He said she is a University of Miami graduate who is not married and has no children. Shot in the knee, she went through five hours of surgery Thursday. The attack damaged one of three blood vessels in her leg. Doctors told him his daughter would live but may not be able to walk again. Dalley, who spoke with her after the surgery, said her biggest concern was the lives of the other officers.
Carlin, hired in April 1994, began his law enforcement career as a public service aide, police said. Tundidor had been with the Cutler Ridge district since April 1993, and was hired by Miami-Dade in November 1989. He also had worked in the Kendall and Hammocks districts.
Maj. Charles E. Nanney, of the narcotics bureau, worked with Carlin and Tundidor in Cutler Ridge. He remembers Carlin as a ‘’hell of a street cop,’’ a reserve National Guardsman with a penchant for cuffing criminals.
Tundidor also has an uncle who is a police officer, and his wife is a civilian employee of Miami-Dade police, Nanney said. He spoke with Tundidor on Thursday evening.
‘’He’s sad, of course, because one of his brothers got killed. But he’s grateful to be alive,’’ Nanney said.

We may have bumped into each other then. My inlaws at the time lived there, as did several members of my family. I lived just north of Eureka drive, but I traveled there often.
It was a working class neighborhood, and as "trashy" as parts of it were, they were mostly good people, I have many good memories. That neighborhood was particularly hard hit by Andrew, but all the people pulled together, took care of each other, and armed themselves to the teeth and took care of crime that way :)
