Vietnam Memorial Wall Defaced This Weekend (September 7-9, 2007)
Eyewitnesses to the damage, Concretebob, Mr. and Mrs. Trooprally ^ | September 9, 2007

Posted on 09/09/2007 6:55:45 PM PDT by tgslTakoma

Mrs. Trooprally called me this evening to tell me that she and her husband, as well as Concretebob, saw damage along almost the entire length of the Vietnam Memorial Wall. They found this damage this morning, when they walked through the area before participating in the September 11th Freedom Walk.

Concretebob was told by a National Park Service employee that the damage was done on Friday night. There was no police report taken or written about the vandalism, apparently. And the damage was still very much there today.

Here are a few of the photos that Mrs. Trooprally took this morning...

This first one is not so noticeable, but as they walked into the center, it got worse.

It seems like a oil that has and acid in it; As you go up the Wall some the names can not be read!!!

It looks like the person who did this walked along The Wall with some type of container, perhaps hidden at their side so that they could squirt the oily substance without being caught in the act.

The names along the lower part of The Wall appear to have taken the brunt of the damage.

Because of the reflective nature of The Wall, Mrs. Trooprally had a tough time capturing the extent of the damage. Mr. Trooprally said that the oily substance has discolored the shiny stone, but that it has been absorbed into the more porous area where the names are etched into The Wall.

They forgot their matches....

Not bad. Only 25 posts to find somebody thinking along the same lines I'm thinking ... Like, maybe, this was a practice run. Next time they come along with petrol. And a lighter. Leftist kookbirds love to burn things. At least, they did back in the day ("Burn, baby, burn").

This act was not a protest against the war. The Memorial isn't really to the war. It's a memorial to the men who died there, and defacing it is a direct offence against them. Personally. The perpetrators are beneath contempt.

With how the Wall is setup, it is easy to miss the damage that was done. But this does not suprise me at all since we are now dealing with radicals that just want to distroy what is important.

Too, had something dripped from above, why is there no indication of any substance on the top two thirds of the Wall?

If it were a small engine, such as a gas powered edger, etc. it would probably be two-cycle, which is just oily gas. That would be light enough that if said wind blew it into the wall at the bottom, I would imagine we would see some near the top.

I understand recognizing the fact that there is no definitive proof that it was vandalism. I don’t understand the need to conjure up scenarios in order to explain away vandalism. (Not you, but the posts you referred to, T.)

I had wondered that too; more plausible than leaky lawn mowers and edgers IMO.

Just FWIW ... 2-cycle engines are getting awfully hard to find. My year old weed-whacker (Troy-Bilt brand) has a 4-cycle engine. I’ve no idea to what extent the new engines have penetrated the professional lawn-care industry.

“I think Hillary, Kerry, Murtha, Pelosi, Schumer, Reid, Feinstein, and the rest of their Liberal anti-American, anti-military cohorts should be sent to clean up the Memorial. Let them put actions to their hypocritical words.”

I think I’d rather having cleaning experts who know what they’re doing.

Thanks very much for the ping. Thanks for posting. The enemy within. Vandalizing property that does not belong to them.

I can’t fathom what the perpetrator was trying to do here beyond enrage and hurt those who’s loved ones are immortalized on The Wall.

I will say I suspect they are routine posters at Daily kos and moveon.org’s websites.

Remember, the nutbags over on Indymedia also talked about defacing monuments back in March.

Wouldn't surprise me if this was just a prelude to more stuff they wanted to try leading up to this weekend.

‘Wouldn’t surprise me if this was just a prelude to more stuff they wanted to try leading up to this weekend.’

I had the chance to visit DC a few years ago, pre 9/11. The Wall haunts you afterwards, as does the one to the Korean War.

I just don’t understand the reasoning behind this. Obviously somebody spent quite a bit of time working out how to do this.

You could have guards all over the place, and somebody could still pull a stunt like this. The liquid was probably sprayed very discreetly. It would be difficult to catch somebody in the act.

Eventually, this memorial will be placed behind a shield, which will ruin the very tactile nature of the memorial which makes it so powerful.

Hopefully the scumbags who did this are somewhere bragging amongst their fellow travelers about their great strike against the military. And, also hopefully, there is somebody in that group who sees that they have gone too far, and is quietly contacting the Park Police.
