We have many rules here at FR. I have an additional one that I observe. I have resolved never to let Senator Chuck Hagel be named without pointing out that he is an imbecile.

It is good for the US that the voters of Nebraska have come to that conclusion and that his imbecility is moderate enough that he realized that they knew he was an imbecile.

He apparently isn’t into that sort of thing.

He’d rather take questions from comedians instead of politicos.

Not that it makes that much of a difference, other than perhaps audience.

Does [Ted] have a clue what’s going on over there?

Don't need no facts. Polemics = "facts." "Theology" takes precedence over history. The trick is to make people think the "theology" is factual.

So why do I seem to lean to the large, older, balding, slow-talking guy?

So do I...Mitt is, IMHO, not going to catch fire with the common folk, like me. Brit was searching for an explanation today on FNS as to why Romney has not yet been more popular. While there are no doubt many reasons for the public's reluctance to make Mitt the front runner, I chalk it up to a lack of identification with everyday people.

To probably make an oversimplification, Vic Damone is a great singer with marvelous technique; but Sinatra was the more successful, IMHO, because of flaws that made him more human-- he could swing.

I think this is maybe the difference between us Brits and the US the ordinary folk I think would warm to Mitt rather than Fred.

I think age also has something to do with it wrongly in recent years in Britain we feel that our leaders should be younger than they used to be I could never envisage in the present climate any party who seriously expected to win a general election having a leader of over 60 years of age.

One of the reason I believe this is because people would feel with all the foreign travel and high pressure you are under as a leader of your country that a man or women over 60 would not have the stamina for it.

I am not sure if this is true but it is perceived in Britain that world leaders travel much more and are always expected to be on top of their game at all times and most Brits therefore would feel anyone over 60 when first coming to power is too old.

I suspect that Mitt however is probably 60 or nearly 60 but he does not look it and so someone like that might get away with it in Britain but someone looking like Fred would not.

At least Mitt is willing (or able) to speak to the press.....Why wasn’t Thompson on the Sunday talk shows today? Other than Hannity I have not seen one single TV interview with the “great” Fred Thompson. By all accounts he still seems to be a stealth candidate.
Having said that, when I did see Fred on Hannity I was very impressed. But, if he thinks he is going to continue to pull this back door stuff and be considered a legitimate contender I disagree.

Ever think that maybe he wasn’t invited?

You honestly think that NBC CBS or ABC want him on there talking sensible things to their audience?

Why wasn’t Thompson on the Sunday talk shows today?

Because he don't want to go there, yet. If Thompson was willing, networks would gladly put him and then TRY to trash him. Thompson will not go to the MSM until he lays his ground with party base.

He was on ABC and CNN as well; I guess since most here don’t watch either of those stations, we didn’t see it to report it. Howie Kurtz had a segment on Fred this morning, and mentioned how the abc gal was asking him about his wife. And then, Howie had the audacity to criticize Fred for not facing other reporters more frequently, by stating if he can’t stand up to Woffie and Stephie, how will he stand up to the terrorists. Of course, no such remark from HOwie about how the dems are so afraid of Chris Wallace and Wendal Golar by refusing to go on FNC and debate on Fox News. HA. Howie is such a tool!

You make some excellent points and provide interesting insights as to the UK. Thanks. There is a folksy, healthy or not, aspect to US politics that have been invaluable to G. W. Bush. Abe Lincoln was the prototypical POTUS with the common touch, not a looker. Perhaps FDT will prove to be similar to Honest Abe.

Can they get away with that? Normally I am sure they could, but lots of people are watching her a little closer right now.

If the drive bys decide to report on what she actually does, no. Some of them are actually doing a little gentle, careful reporting. I don't know if they're protecting themselves from a possible loser or just trying to stay in business.

If the only people watching her are us, she'll never be asked publically, "What charity did you give the money to, when did you give it, and how much did you give?" Then there needs to be follow-up with the charity to confirm.

If she's caught giving it to the Clinton Global Thingie, she'll say she gave it to support micro-investments in the third world; if Clinton Foundation, it's to save Africa from AIDS. If it's the others, it's for the children. In the end, she'll maintain control of the funds.

I personally would like to see the New School exposed for what it is. I wonder how many more such organizations there are.

Bingo...especially News departments on those networks...Fred was very impressive on Leno. The importance of this when applied to the non-politically obsessed segments of our society cannot be over emphasized.

Do you think that Mitt could be ... too perfect? lol...Not only is he perfect, but it seems his whole family is...5 terrific sons, 5 perfect d-i-l, oodles of darling, perfect grandkids. He married the first gal he fell in love with...it's just not normal, all that perfection.

I think I remember seeing him in the 5th Element

What does Thompson plan to do to introduce himself to the American voter?
Is Jay Leno it? If so, thats not good enough for me. I repeat, I like the tiny bit of Thompson I have seen but I resent his stealth, safe, back door candidacy. At least the other GOP candidates have had the hutspah to put themselves out there and face the heat. Good, bad or indifferent, at least the other GOP contenders are in the damn game.

I concede that if Fred is in the slightest appealing to the average voter the MSM will demonize or ignore him.
Its maddening.
