G.I. Joe to Become Global Task Force in Movie (Curse you Hollywood!)

The popular all-American comic-book military man and action figure dating back to the 1940s is undergoing a significant transformation for the Paramount Pictures-distributed "G.I. Joe" film, which begins production in February and is scheduled for release in summer 2009.

No longer will G.I. Joe be a U.S. Special Forces soldier, the "Real American Hero" who, in his glory days, single-handedly won World War II.

In the politically correct new millennium, G.I. Joe bears no resemblance to the original.

Paramount has confirmed that in the movie, the name G.I. Joe will become an acronym for "Global Integrated Joint Operating Entity" — an international, coed task force charged with defeating bad guys. It will no longer stand for government issued, as in issued by the American government.

The studio won't elaborate, saying filming hasn't begun and details are still in the works, but the behind-the-scenes rumblings are that the producers have decided to change the nature of G.I. Joe in order to appeal to a wider, more international audience.

The word is that in the current political climate, they're afraid that a heroic U.S. soldier won't fly.

I can't wait to see how they revise Cobra Commander. /s

He'll be like Ming the Not-so-Merciless in the new TV Flash Gordon.

I think I’ll hang on to my money and wait for some other interpretation.

Next they'll have an apology for this before the movie:

GI Joe smacks down metrosexual Ken

Seeing how an action movie like this wouldn’t do well overseas, the movie has to rely on domestic box office. I think its safe to say this movie won’t fare to well here in America.

Action movies tend to do well overseas - far better than other types of movies. Superman did real well despite doing away with the slogan "Truth, justice and the American way". I can't really get on the producers' case. It's their money and their reputations on the line. What I'd really like to see is a De Palma-like take on GI Joe. If Hollywood leftists lose their shirts on making movies, they'll have that much less money to hand over to the Democrats, won't they?

LOL... My husband was just talking about that commercial not long ago and showed me the video. But I had to point out to him: I remember Barbie being much taller than G.I. Joe when I was a kid.

This is Hollywood. They’ll pull off his hood and reveal he’s really Don Rumsfeld.

Cobra Commander is actually kind of a sympathetic figure. At least he’s fighting for a cause. Destro, on the other hand, is a slimy hired killer that just wants to turn a buck.

What I really want to see is the actress playing the Baroness, in costume. I bet she’ll put some “Yo!” into this version of G.I. JOE...

Hasbro has a sizable military audience with their D&D games, this is going to be really funny to watch.
