NOW that Fred Thompson has officially entered the contest for the Republican presidential nomination, the Tall Drink of Water from Tennessee has to knock Rudy Giuliani out of the top spot in the national polls if he is to have a chance of prevailing in the GOP primaries.
It's simple logic. Thompson wrote off the early primary state of New Hampshire this week by refusing to attend the GOP debate there on Wednesday night in favor of a Jay Leno booking. And he doesn't seem to be making an effort in the early caucus state of Iowa.
He's effectively ceded those two to Mitt Romney,

Pretty silly attempt at analysis.
Rudy-Hillary with a lisp..
Sorry to disagree with my good friend John Podhoretz, but Thompson hasn't "written off" any state as these events never began in earnest until AFTER Labor Day and people get back from the beach, the lake, the mountains, etc. and back to regular life in the fall.
Thompson and his crowd also are listening to conservatives who murmmer that, in the "top tier" there are no real conservatives to represent us/them. Yes, there are some further down in the pack but they have yet to break out and all the media, especially in NY, DC and LA ever notice are Rudy, Mitt and McCain as "stars."
We don't care for any of them as Rudy is a liberal, Mitt has just discovered he is a conservative, and McCain never cared much for conservatives.
Has this idiot even looked at Thompson's upcoming travel schedule? A lot of places that end with ", IA" and ", NH".
Ah, but knocking Giuliani out of the top spot in the polls doesn’t require attacking Giuliani. All it takes is for a few of the other candidates to the right of Giualiani with much lower poll numbers than Thompson to see the handwriting on the wall and drop out.
Heck, if Thompson picked up the support of the backers of all the conservative candidates now polling in the single digits, that would put him ahead. And that’s based on polling before the offical declaration. I suspect a lot of the ‘undecideds’ in pre-Sept.-6 polls may have been waiting for Thompson to declare before they’d say they were supporting him.
WTF is this idiot talking about? He’s campaigning in Iowa and NH this week. I thought John Podhoretz normally was at least somewhat informed.
a waker no doubt,
LOL, oh really? Iowa is the first place that Fred traveled to this week and NH is on the trip route too IIRC.
Take a listen to Fred’s announcement again, and you will see, hear, and feel why anyone in the current establishment is afraid of him.
Oh, I’ve seen it several times. I know they’re afraid, but such blatant ignorance is still a bit odd. I hope the establishment reads Podhoretz’s junk and takes it seriously...it’ll make it even easier for Fred to take out the field. :)
If I were to decide to waste my time and energy backing one of the “never happen” candidates, it would probably be John Cox.
Hey, he has as little chance as any of ‘em, and he’s a heck of a lot more likable.
Hey man, John Cox will happen. It is just a matter of time before he blows past RP...
Never happen? He’s got the big mo, my friend...John Cox is closing in on Duncan Hunter’s .5%. The Presidency is just around the corner! :p
Podhoretz lost all his credibility with me by his “ONLY RUDY CAN BEAT HILLARY” scaremongering. He’s a paid Ruity shill.
More media spin-opinion. Fred`s campaign roll out was his primary goal this week. And it was successful. Not attending a debate that was scheduled for the same time frame, doesn't mean he's not going to compete in NH or Iowa. Fact is, Fred just spent time in the Hawkeye state. All this careless opining could lead to some folks eating a bunch of crow in the next month or two. Especially if Fred gets 10% points up on Rooty and deposits $10 million in his campaign coffers. Underestimating Fred`s final end game may not be the best course to take.
And he doesn't seem to be making an effort in the early caucus state of Iowa.LOL -- Fred has 'em scared witless : )
Here's a link to a video of FDT's very first campaign stop -- Des Moines.
