How sad.

I developed a liking for classical music only because of Luciano Pavarotti.

Nobody shall sleep!... Nobody shall sleep! Even you, o Princess, in your cold room, watch the stars, that tremble with love and with hope.

Nessun Dorma....part of Puccini’s Tarandot . First time I heard it was in Verona Italy when I was stationed in Aviano Italy.

The first time it was more than just opera was when Pavarotti sang it........just awesome .

Of course you are correct. The opera I should have referred to is Turandot. That’s what I get for writing too fast. Thanks.

Many opera “purists” criticized him for going on tour with Domingo and Carreras and for singing with pop artists. If it weren’t for a beautiful song, Perhaps Love, that Domingo recorded with John Denver I would never have found Pavarotti.

My favorite youtube clip. The three tenors and O Sole Mio. Shows the humorous side of this brilliant man and his amazing voice.

A comment on youtube explains this clip:
If you watch the video closely, you will see the signaling between singers and conductor as to whose turn it is. Pavarotti did not forget his place—Domingo “took” it and in response, Pavarotti’s extended trilling—and in response to that the duet trilling of Domingo and Carreras—to Pavarotti’s delight.

I was fortunate enought to hear Paravotti sing not ten feet from me at An Evening with Paravotti, plus a couple of dozen operas.

Me, too. And he stayed an hour after the performance signing autographs. My autographed program from that event is one of my treasures.

Thanks for the link.

Luciano’s body is lying in state at the cathedral in Modena. Thousands are passing by, in respect to one of Italy’s finest sons.

Notes to accompany my previous post:

Luciano Pavarotti Recital- complete- NYC 10/28/73

This early, complete Pavarotti recital finds the 38 year old tenor is truly magnificent form. He was on the verge of super stardom this year, 1973, with the recent triumph of the Met Fille in the very recent past. He generously gives us 22 selections, including encores. Viva Luciano, per sempre!!

Thank you again! When are these recordings from?

I have been trying to find out if anyone here is going to be televising Pavarotti’s funeral tomorrow. I know it’s going to be televised live in Italy. Andrea Bocelli will sing ‘Panis angelicus’ at the service. I read Placido Domingo can’t attend.
Do you have any information?

What a treat! Thank you! Just finished listening to it all. Pianist was wonderful. Pavarotti’s voice was great - was this mid 70’s to mid 80’s?

music is the understanding of math , math is the understanding of God.

Sublime! Done correctly, they are both perfection.

> When are these recordings from? There are a couple of people who have posted to rec.music.opera, who now more frequently post to a closed list in which I participate, and who produce and post "podcasts." Many of these are selections from live (pirated) recordings either they made or they traded for, and others are excerpts from their record collections. Try these links and hunt around:
Ed Rosen Podcasts

Charlie Handelman Podcasts

As for the funeral, it begins at 9AM EDT today (Saturday). It will be broadcast live in Italy, but I do not know of anyone carrying it here.

And the best Panis Angelicus I remember was Pavarotti singing a duet with his father at a recital once. I think I was there, but I might be remembering it from TV. It was a long time ago.
