More evidence that Al Gore's Live Earth flop was indeed the beginning of the end to the public's fascination with global warming: Leonardo DiCaprio's recently released film on the subject has bombed with moviegoers.

As reported by Fox News's Roger Friedman Wednesday (emphasis added throughout):

His environmental documentary, "The 11th Hour," has been a total bust at the box office. After 18 days in release, the film has grossed only $417,913 from ticket sales.

As Friedman pointed out, these are horrible numbers:

The 90-minute snore-fest is playing on 111 screens this week, but that number is likely to be reduced this Friday. The film will be sent to DVD heaven after that.

By comparison, Al Gore and Davis Guggenheim's similar but far more engaging "An Inconvenient Truth" had already made $3.5 million by its 18th day of release.

With the disaster that was Live Earth, and the BBC's announcement that it's canceling a planned day-long special on climate change, it certainly appears the public has tired of being told by disingenuous, wealthy, hypocritical movie stars that the world is going to come to an end if they don't stop driving automobiles and heating their homes during winter.

Even more troublesome to a media fixated on shoving this supposed problem down the throats of citizens is how much attention was given to this film by press outlets throughout the country including the New York Times and CBS.

Is this an indication that the press have way overplayed this issue, and that the public have grown numb to media claims of imminent doom?

Or, have back-to-back errant predictions of above average hurricane seasons led the public to a logical conclusion press members seem incapable of coming to: meteorologists can't predict weather a week from today; why should anybody believe they can forecast events decades and centuries into the future?

Regardless of the answer, it seems that two years after Katrina hit New Orleans, without a follow-up occurrence of that natural disaster, America has lost its appetite for the global warming alarmism being served by the press.

Now that's an inconvenient truth.

*****Update: Brian Maloney tells us that "The 11th Hour" was written by Al Franken's Air America replacement.

Yep, it’s an inconvenient truth that people are tired of hearing about this subject.

I am happy to have scientists study this subject objectively. And if man contributes, see what we can reasonably do to affect change. But Al Gore and the Hollywood Idiots like Leo go waaaay overboard on this. Al Gore is not intellectually honest to say that the debate is over. There is evidence against what Al preaches. If we’re going to be scientifically sound, ALL the evidence should be put out there if you are going to make the case.

What happens when Leonardo the Misfit Mini-Mogul can't repay the money he borrowed to finance the carbon offsets for this debacle?

Should he have to agree to give up his electric ass exfoliator for 10 years?

No it’s not. There are dozens of movies every year that get numbers like that, movies you never heard of because they aren’t wide release movies, but movies that exist all the same. There 230 movies released this year that have made less, it’s just not that big a deal.

the problem with the gloating is there is nothing to gloat about. It’s like gloating about the sun rising in the east. A movie that opened at 4 theaters and has expanded to 111 over the course of two more weekends is making the kind of money you expect from a movie opened at 4 theaters and eventually expanded to 111. It’s like getting excited about water boiling when heat is applied, it’s just not gloat worthy.

Was it being shown in “green” theaters (no air conditioning)?

You bring such horrific imagery to my neural landscape I feel compelled to cleanse the thread:

It’s not easy being green.

400k in 18 days with 111 theatres that are probably in the biggest cities in America (which have a much higher PTA than say where I live) is actually quite awful. Indie films in those markets can hit 10k / theatre / day if WOM is solid.

But often they don’t. In total grosses for the year is 173rd out of a list of 404. Lots of movies make less money. And remember it isn’t 18 days with 111 theaters, the first weekend was 4 theaters, the second was 20, the third was 111.

Regrettably, the otherwise informative article fails to go into that level of detail.  If such theaters exist that would certainly explain a lot, including the overheated rhetoric spewing from the mouths of Enviro-Whacko hysterics.

Rush dealt with this today and mentioned the BBC is reporting that many in Britian are now of the belief the man made global warming crowd is purporting this politicalhoax....

Yes, and a huge percentage of them also believe that the Global Warming scare is merely a mechanism to tax them more.

They are probably right.

Let’s see . . . $418,000 divided by 111 theaters, divided by 18 days of release, divided by $8.00 per ticket yields 26 people per theater per day. If you figure 2 showings per day, each screening was attended by 13 people. Marvelous.

Nope your math broke right at the beginning. Initial release was 4 theaters, then the next weekend went up to 20, then this for Labor Day weekend went up to 111.

According to Boxofficemojo.com, the 11th Hour's nationwide gross yesterday was $18,592 or $111 per theater.

Yep, it's dead, Jim.

Not since test ban treaty was signed has a bomb of this magnitude been detonated.

Leonardo is a much better ABC News Reporter than he is an actor. Afterall, he did get that one hour ABC News interview with Bill Clinton...
