One of the problems with discussing the phenomenon known as suicide bombers is that by doing so, one inevitably ends up talking about the darker aspects of Islam, which is something that our increasingly PC-driven society frowns upon. And so we end up with fallacies rather than fact: suicide bombers are poor, wretched people – thanks to Western influence and interference – who decide to blow themselves up, killing others in the same act, as a way of making a statement about a world gone wrong.

 

The reality is much different. French/Israeli filmmaker Pierre Rehov has delved deeply into this twisted world of neurosis, martyrdom, pathology and death in the name of Islam. His film, Suicide Killers, examines the psychopathology of Islamic suicide bombers. It includes interviews with bombers who were jailed before they could pull the cord, their families, and survivors of these ghastly attacks.

 

While suicide bombing has been taking place in the Middle East, including Israel, for some time now, America and the rest of the West were introduced to it on September 11, 2001. Rehov warns that this was just the beginning:

 

The destruction of the World Trade Towers was Islamist reveille! America symbolizes the free world, equality between men and women, and a refuge to minorities and liberal capitalism. These values are absent in the Muslim world, where freedom is not even a concept, equality between men and women doesn't exist, all money is in the hands of a few dictators and their relations, and the poor are fed with religion and have no power or hope for a decent life.

 

Strict Muslims adhere to something called Shari’a law. Its Arabic interpretation is the “way” or “path to the water source.” Shari’a law provides a legal framework for both public and private ways of life to be conducted according to Muslim principles. It covers all aspects of everyday life, from politics and economics to family, sexuality, hygiene and social concerns. Shari’a is notably incompatible with the secular governments prevalent in the Western world, and as our global community becomes more intertwined, the Islamists become more enraged by the dichotomy. Rather than accept the differences or try to assimilate more modern ways of thinking, Islamists demand that the rest of the world bend to their will. And so we come to suicide bombers, also known as shaheeds (martyrs).

 

According to Rehov, those who are most susceptible to becoming suicide bombers are generally young people age 15 to 25. (While they consist mostly of males, female suicide bombers are now also being recruited.) Although the accepted PC view of suicide bombers is that Western domination has driven them to their desperate acts, Rehov strongly disagrees, placing the blame directly on the tenets of Islam.

Oppression, lack of freedom, brain washing, organized poverty, placing God in charge of daily life, total separation between men and women, forbidding sex, giving women no power whatsoever, and placing men in charge of family honor, which is mainly connected to their women's behavior. 

Rehov notes other disturbing aspects of the suicide bombing trend: the Muslim belief that Islam will prevail upon all of the earth, the United Nations’ not openly condemning terrorist organizations (thus backhandedly condoning them), and Muslim charities operating as a cover for supporting these terrorist organizations.

It’s ironic that those detractors of George W. Bush who sneeringly label him a “cowboy” don’t realize that a label for suicide bombers is more appropriate. “The shaheeds are the cowboys or the firemen of Islam. Shaheed is a positively reinforced value in this culture. And what kid has never dreamed of becoming a cowboy or a fireman?” asks Rehov.

His interaction with the families of suicide bombers was a “fascinating” yet “terrifying experience”:

You are dealing with seemingly normal people with very nice manners who have their own logic, which to a certain extent can make sense since they are so convinced that what they say is true. It is like dealing with pure craziness, like interviewing people in an asylum, since what they say, is for them, the absolute truth. I hear a mother saying "Thank God, my son is dead." Her son had became a shaheed, a martyr, which for her was a greater source of pride than if he had became an engineer, a doctor or a winner of the Nobel Prize. This system of values works completely backwards since their interpretation of Islam worships death much more than life. You are facing people whose only dream, only achievement is to fulfill what they believe to be their destiny, namely to be a shaheed or the family of a shaheed. They don't see the innocent being killed, they only see the impure that they have to destroy. 

Recent events in Britain, where Muslim doctors of Middle Eastern origin were arrested as a result of their botched attempts at a series of car bombings, seem to answer to Rehov’s theory. Successful men in a welcoming society where they lead relatively comfortable lives, suddenly decide to become the agents of death? It sounds crazy. But there is a certain logic behind it, albeit a twisted one. Religion, says Rehov, “is their only conviction. They don't act to gain a territory or to find freedom or even dignity. They only follow Allah, the supreme judge, and what He tells them to do.”

He expounds upon this reasoning, based upon his experiences in Palestine:

From what I heard directly from many aspiring to shahada (martyrdom) that I interviewed in prison, and in the streets of some Palestinian towns and villages, you do not start thinking about becoming a suicide killer in reaction to an Israeli tank. The idea starts in the mosque. Yes, where, every Friday, most Imams mix up religious and political sermons, where they say that the Jews are the descendants of Apes and Pigs, deserving no mercy after having betrayed God himself, and killed most of the Prophets. And next, the idea is further advanced by Palestinian television where those sermons are mixed up with video clips staging Israeli soldiers raping Palestinian women and targeting children. And where numerous programs stage “martyrs” talking from heaven about the delights of the afterlife, and of the 72 virgins waiting for Allah’s good servants. And then later in the streets, the kids who have been poisoned against the Jews in the mosques and on television play “martyrs and Jewish pigs” the same way Western kids play cowboys and Indians.

But, you say, he’s talking about Palestine. Surely other Muslims don’t subscribe to this train of thought? Think again.

The threat of suicide bombers now goes far beyond the Israeli-Palestinian borders – to London, Bali, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Iraq and Jordan – and where will it end? Suicide bombers are not heroes. To be a hero, you must make a choice. And in their culture, suicide bombers have no choice.

Is there anything we can do? Rehov has a solution, but it likely isn’t a popular one:

Stop being politically correct and stop believing that this culture is a victim of ours. Islamism today is nothing but a new form of Nazism. Nobody was trying to justify or excuse Hitler in the 1930s. We had to defeat him in order to make peace one day with the German people.

And still our State Dept (and indeed the Adminstration) expects peace to be achieved in this environment? You cannot appease or buy these people. You need to change their basic mindset through whatever means necessary. Sadly, the only way to achieve peace is for one side or the other to be totally crushed and exhausted—then remolded in the victor’s image. This is what happened after WWII. Given current trends, it will never happen in the Middle East. On the other hand, it might happen if Israel is forever pushed into concessions which ultimately make the situation worse.

Lots of people did exactly that, including such rather prominent people as the ex-King of England; the American ambassador to the UK, Joseph Kennedy; Charles Lindbergh; Ezra Pound, a leading writer and intellectual; and, to a much less egregious degree, every single appeaser in Britain, France and elsewhere.

After Stalin signed the non-agression pact with Hitler, just about every lefty in the world suddenly switched sides to justifying Hitler, and switching back as soon as Operation Barbarossa started.
