The Birth of al Qaedastan

In the year 2016, the world may find itself gloomily marking September 6 as the tenth anniversary of the creation of the Islamic Emirate of Waziristan. The Emirate received de facto recognition when the Taliban used the name on the ceasefire agreement they signed with Pakistan on that day in 2006. If things go terribly wrong in the coming decade, they could come to rule a mountainous fragment of Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The Emirate would be a nightmare state: Osama bin Laden as sultan, Ayman al Zawahiri as vizier, and Mullah Omar the spiritual leader. An economy built on smuggling and heroin. Primary export: terrorism. Welcome to ‘Al Qaedastan’.

Analysts say the rise of a terrorist state straddling the rugged area between Pakistan and Afghanistan is now viable. The reason is a number of troubling trends. One, the revival of a Taliban firmly in the control of Al Qaeda. Two, the seeming inability of either Kabul or Islamabad to defeat the new threat militarily. LOCAL HATE CRIME: COLUMBUS MOSQUE ATTACK

It’s a crime that deeply concerns the Muslim community and the worshipers in central Ohio.

The Columbus police report called it a biased attack on Muslim men leaving a mosque after prayer during the Ramadan season, a holy times of year for people of the Muslim faith.

Friday night, as two worshipers were leaving the mosque after prayers a group of young men started swearing at them. The suspects then threw rocks and bottles at the victims, hitting one person, and shattering a glass door.

Spokesmen for the Ohio Council on American Islamic Relations, Ahmad Al-Akhris and Romin Iqbal, say the mosque is certainly a target. Police have recorded these crimes as actual hate crimes and will prosecute.

It’s coming on the evening of Ramadan: giving, sharing, feeling the suffering of everybody, its considered is a special month of prayer.

Al-Akris says more people are going to the mosque to pray because of the month of Ramadan and he says people should be able to pray in peace. The spokesmen call upon all people of all faiths, catholic, jewish, christian, muslim, to condemn this act.

Detectives in the Strategic Response Bureau are investigating the assault, but have no suspects so far.

A central plank of the al-Qaida resurgence noted by U.S. analysts is its sophisticated messaging and propaganda strategy, spearheaded by a state-of-the-art in-house multimedia production facility producing high-quality videos every three days or so.

The as-Sahab Institute, as the terror network`s media arm calls itself, is often in the global spotlight -- as it was last week after releasing Osama bin Laden`s message to Americans and two other videos to mark the sixth anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

But little is known about the institute or how it operates, and its existence presents a knotty conundrum for U.S. intelligence: It would be hard to close down, and besides, allowing it to operate might be the best chance of finding bin Laden. Technology and the globalized 21st century 'make it possible for a relatively small group of people to exercise tremendously disproportionate power' in a 'tremendously asymmetric struggle,' CIA Director Gen. Michael Hayden said of as-Sahab Tuesday. 'It might be disappointing, but it shouldn`t be surprising' that they continued to operate, he told United Press International.

According to IntelCenter, a U.S. firm that tracks and analyzes al-Qaida`s audiovisual messages for clients including U.S. agencies, as-Sahab has released more than 75 videos this year -- an average of one every three days. That is double the rate the institute managed last year, when it produced 58. It released just 16 videos in 2005, its first year of operation.

Magazine claims terrorist in NZ

Immigration officials are probing claims a man trained as a terrorist in Afghanistan gained a New Zealand work permit using false documents and is now employed as a chef.

Immigration Minister David Cunliffe told Parliament yesterday he was inclined not to believe the claims, made by the man's former Waikato employer, but he had ordered the probe as a precautionary measure. The number of cases dealt with by Immigration New Zealand was so high that mistakes were sometimes made, he said. "I am in the process of receiving and considering briefs from Department of Labour officials on this matter," Cunliffe said. "There is an investigation under way, but early indications are the information is unsubstantiated and may be malicious in nature." Cunliffe said that in the 2006-2007 year, 500,000 case decisions were made by immigration officers. "In any such system not every decision will be perfect, but I am satisfied that where errors in judgment or systems failures occur the department actively seeks to redress those," he said.

He was responding to a report in Investigate magazine, headlined "Jihad in the kitchen", claiming two Pakistani cousins with links to Lashkar-i-Toiba had been granted work permits in 2002 after arriving on false documents. The men were named as Jameel ur Rehman and Muhammed Anwar. Investigate said Anwar had been deported but Rehman remained in New Zealand.

CAIRO, Egypt - Osama bin Laden will release a new message soon declaring war on Pakistani President Gen. Pervez Musharraf, al-Qaida announced Thursday.

The announcement of the upcoming message came as al-Qaida released a new video in which bin Laden’s deputy boasted that the United States was being defeated in Afghanistan, Iraq and other fronts.

Iraqi Special Operations Forces, U.S. Special Forces engage extremists, kill three; detain 14 others

BAGHDAD — Iraqi Special Operations Forces killed three militant extremists during an early morning intelligence driven operation targeting an extremist Special Groups battalion commander Sept. 19 in the Baya’a area of Baghdad.

As the Iraqi and U.S forces arrived at the target location, two armed insurgents pointed their weapons at the forces exhibiting hostile intent. The forces responded with proportional and well-aimed fires, killing the two individuals. At a second location, a third insurgent attacked the teams with small arms fire. The teams responded with proportionate and well-aimed fire, killing the insurgent.

The ISOF detained three other suspicious individuals at the targeted locations.

The targeted militant extremist Special Groups battalion commander is wanted for launching rocket and improvised explosive device attacks against Iraqi and Coalition Forces. Intelligence indicates he is also the media representative for the Jaysh al-Madhi militia in al Baya’a.

In two other separate intelligence driven operations Sept. 19 in Diwaniyah, Iraqi Special Operations Forces detained 11 other individuals. The operations targeted smuggling operations and supply routes bringing arms, ammunition, mortars and IEDs into Diwaniyah. They were also targeting an extremist IED cell leader and assassination cell member.

U.S. Special Forces were advisers during these operations and there were no Iraqi or U.S. Forces injured.
