Threat Matrix: September 2007

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
The Birth of al Qaedastan

In the year 2016, the world may find itself gloomily marking September 6 as the tenth anniversary of the creation of the Islamic Emirate of Waziristan. The Emirate received de facto recognition when the Taliban used the name on the ceasefire agreement they signed with Pakistan on that day in 2006. If things go terribly wrong in the coming decade, they could come to rule a mountainous fragment of Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The Emirate would be a nightmare state: Osama bin Laden as sultan, Ayman al Zawahiri as vizier, and Mullah Omar the spiritual leader. An economy built on smuggling and heroin. Primary export: terrorism. Welcome to ‘Al Qaedastan’.

Analysts say the rise of a terrorist state straddling the rugged area between Pakistan and Afghanistan is now viable. The reason is a number of troubling trends. One, the revival of a Taliban firmly in the control of Al Qaeda. Two, the seeming inability of either Kabul or Islamabad to defeat the new threat militarily. Three, and the most striking, the Taliban’s systematic supplanting of the traditional tribal leadership in the area. Full story...

“Israelis ‘blew apart Syrian nuclear cache’”

Given Olmert's abominable handling of the Hezbollah fight last year, it gives me confidence that there are still some smart, competent folk in the IDF. What a great message to Syria. We can penetrate your air defense (one of the toughest in the ME) at will and you can't do a thing about it, so don't get uppidty.

I love those little “page up and page down” buttons on my keyboard. Maybe you should give them a try.

It looks like we’re going to have to start using a new acronym:

LCO! Leave Cindy Alone!

I’m not a noob, i’ve been around since at least 2003.

Isn’t it simply logical that for daily terrorist roundups that contain the same drivel along with the travel warnings which also contain the same jargon aside from the specific area, that the headline and link would not be sufficient enough? And do we need the perscution.org link daily?

I know Cindy works very hard here, definitely can’t take that away from her and it’s appreciated but DAILY we have the same 3-4 posts where the headline and link would be more than enough instead of 4 pages of repeated text.

just my opinion, try to bash my logic. you can’t.

I have been around for a few years too but just lurked and didn’t post until lately. I believe that instead of criticizing Cindy or anyone else. Try and understand their viewpoint. I can't save every link that is posted. It helps if some of the stuff is reposted so I do not have to go back and search. I wouldn't take a thing away from Cindy or any others that have posted here for years. They have shown and proved their worth countlessly.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
RELEASE No. 20070916-02
September 16, 2007

Iraqi Special Operations Forces, U.S. Special Forces detain two key extremist militant leaders
Multi-National Corps – Iraq PAO

BAGHDAD – Iraqi Special Operations Forces, with U.S. Special Forces as advisers, detained a extremist militant company commander and a cell member Sept. 15 during an operation in Ad Diwaniyah.

During the operation, enemy fighters initiated an attack on Iraqi and U.S. Forces with an improvised explosive device, small arms and machine gun fire. The forces returned well-aimed and proportional fire to eliminate the threat, killing three enemy fighters and wounding several others.

Intelligence indicates the extremist commander leads more than 20 enemy forces, who are responsible for launching improvised explosive device, explosively formed penetrator and indirect fire attacks against Iraqi and Coalition Forces in the area.

On July 5, the group attacked the Coalition base in Ad Diwaniyah with indirect fires. Further intelligence reports that the group has launched more than 450 rocket and mortar attacks on the base during the past four months.

Reports also indicate this group assaulted the local police station on July 7 of this year, killed two Iraqi police officers and then fired on Coalition forces rushing to aid the police.

In a separate operation Sept. 15 in the Bayaa area of Baghdad, ISOF detained an extremist militant battalion commander. The suspect is linked to extra judicial killings, kidnappings and the forcible removal of Sunni residents from the same area.

Sept. 16, 2007
Release A070916b

Key al-Qaeda in Iraq terrorist captured

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition forces captured a suspected longtime al-Qaeda in Iraq terrorist during an operation Sept. 4 in Tarmiyah.

Mu’ayyad ‘Ali Husayn Sulayman al-Bayyati, also known as Abu Wathiq, is believed to have helped bring the al-Qaeda in Iraq terrorist group to Tarmiyah. He is allegedly an advisor to senior terrorist leaders and was responsible for conducting executions.

Intelligence reports indicate al-Bayyati is closely associated with a senior al-Qaeda in Iraq leader and conducts executions either by shooting or beheading people at the main intersection in Tarmiyah. Reports also indicate residents of Tarmiyah feared al-Bayyati’s constant threat of violence and knew him as “The Executioner.” Furthermore, detainee reporting indicates that al-Bayyati tortured two 12-year-old boys by burning their hands and beating them, because he believed the boys were spies for Coalition forces.

Al-Bayyati and two other suspected al-Qaeda in Iraq terrorists were captured on Sept. 4 during coordinated raids northwest of Tarmiyah. One of the other detainees is linked to an operation Sept. 2 where Coalition forces destroyed 12 tons of explosives. During this raid, Coalition forces found two caches of weapons and explosives. An air strike safely destroyed the bomb-making facility and caches found during this operation, which contained rocket-propelled grenades, explosive materials and fully assembled improvised explosive devices.

“We will work closely with Iraqi officials to ensure al-Bayyati receives due process through the Iraqi justice system,” said Maj. Winfield Danielson, MNF-I spokesman.

Records on North Korean ship docked in Syria were altered
16/09/2007

Online databases tracking a ship reportedly flying a North Korean flag that docked in Syria have changed their records following a report in The Washington Post linking the alleged Israeli air strike in Syria to a North Korean shipment.

Ronen Solomon, who searches information in the public domain for companies, told Haaretz he found references to a ship called Al Hamad on three different Web sites after the initial reports of the Israeli raid in Syria on September 6. These included the official sites of Syria's Tartous Port and the Egyptian Transportation Ministry. Two of the three sites said the ship was flying a North Korean flag, and the third site reported it was flying a South Korean flag.

Angry mourners chase away Pakistani officials
9/16/07

PESHAWAR, Pakistan — A chanting throng of more than 100,000 mourners chased away senior Pakistani officials from the funeral of a leading pro-Taliban cleric, police and witnesses said. They hurled shoes at government officials who tried to enter the sprawling stadium where the prayers were being held for Maulana Hassan Jan, 69, who was killed Saturday in the northwestern city of Peshawar.

"Get out!" they chanted when Interior Minister Aftab Sherpao arrived, and provincial chief minister Akram Durrani was given similar treatment. Security officials hurriedly escorted Durrani out of the stadium to other chants directed against Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf and US President George W. Bush. The crowd, mostly made up of students at religious schools, also smashed windows and gates at the stadium, witnesses said.

U.S.: Saudis Still Filling Al Qaeda's Coffers
Saturday, September 15, 2007

Despite six years of promises, U.S. officials say Saudi Arabia continues to look the other way at wealthy individuals identified as sending millions of dollars to al Qaeda. "If I could somehow snap my fingers and cut off the funding from one country, it would be Saudi Arabia," Stuart Levey, the under secretary of the Treasury in charge of tracking terror financing, told ABC News.

Despite some efforts as a U.S. ally in the war on terror, Levey says Saudi Arabia has dropped the ball. Not one person identified by the United States and the United Nations as a terror financier has been prosecuted by the Saudis, Levey says. "When the evidence is clear that these individuals have funded terrorist organizations, and knowingly done so, then that should be prosecuted and treated as real terrorism because it is," Levey says. Among those on the donor list, according to U.S. officials, is Yasin al Qadi, a wealthy businessman named on both the U.S. and U.N. lists of al Qaeda financiers one month after the 9/11 attacks. Al Qadi, who has repeatedly denied the allegations, remains free, still a prominent figure in Saudi Arabia.
