Threat Matrix: September 2007

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
The Birth of al Qaedastan

In the year 2016, the world may find itself gloomily marking September 6 as the tenth anniversary of the creation of the Islamic Emirate of Waziristan. The Emirate received de facto recognition when the Taliban used the name on the ceasefire agreement they signed with Pakistan on that day in 2006. If things go terribly wrong in the coming decade, they could come to rule a mountainous fragment of Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The Emirate would be a nightmare state: Osama bin Laden as sultan, Ayman al Zawahiri as vizier, and Mullah Omar the spiritual leader. An economy built on smuggling and heroin. Primary export: terrorism. Welcome to ‘Al Qaedastan’.

Analysts say the rise of a terrorist state straddling the rugged area between Pakistan and Afghanistan is now viable. The reason is a number of troubling trends. One, the revival of a Taliban firmly in the control of Al Qaeda. Two, the seeming inability of either Kabul or Islamabad to defeat the new threat militarily. Three, and the most striking, the Taliban’s systematic supplanting of the traditional tribal leadership in the area. Full story...

The scene has been cleared in Gaithersburg, MD. Whew.

http://www.wjla.com/news/stories/0907/455203.html

Montgomery County Police and Fire officials are reopening a parking garage after a scare involving what was termed a suspicious vehicle.

Investigators initially reported there was a unusual odor coming from the vehicle on the second level of a parking garage located at 108 Old Town Avenue in Gaithersburg. Investigators evacuated the garage and called in the fire department and the bomb squad. Several area roads were closed.

Officials cleared the scene about two hours after the incident began.

Investigators believe the odor was of methane, produced by decaying organic material in the bed of a pickup.

Several Columbus, OH schools seem to be still on lockdown, although one has been lifted:

My feeling is that this may be connected to a drug bust yesterday in that area:

Key US ally in fight against Qaeda in Iraq assassinated

BAGHDAD (AFP) — Top Sunni sheikh Abdul Sattar Abu Reesha, who spearheaded a fight against Al-Qaeda, was killed by a bomb on Thursday, just 10 days after US President George W. Bush shook his hand when he visited Iraq.

Abu Reesha was killed near his home outside Ramadi, the capital of Anbar province and the region touted by the US military as a success in its fight against the Iraq wing of Osama bin Laden’s jihadist group.

He was killed exactly a year after he formed the Anbar Awakening Conference, a group of 42 tribes, on September 14 last year to fight the Al-Qaeda in Iraq militants.

The attack also came hours before Bush was due to make a televised address detailing Washington’s future strategy in Iraq in which he was expected to reiterate the success of Anbar.

Manhunt Under Way After Gunman Shoots 4 Florida Police Officers, Killing 1

Thursday, September 13, 2007

Miami-Dade Police Department

Shawn Sherwin Labeet

CUTLER BAY, Fla. — A gunman shot and killed a Florida police officer and injured three others Thursday, prompting a massive manhunt and a lockdown of several Miami-area schools, officials said.

Shawn Sherwin Labeet, 25, wearing a bullet-proof vest, fired a high-powered weapon and fled the scene after officers approached his vehicle for a traffic stop, according to police.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez, a former police officer, said the “extremely violent” suspect “assassinated” a police officer.

“We need to find him as soon as possible and make sure that he’s behind bars, where he belongs,” Alvarez said.

Labeet may be traveling with a woman and two children, but police could not confirm if it was a carjacking incident, said Miami-Dade Police Department spokeswoman Linda O’Brien.

All clear:

Gunshots prompt brief lockdown at seven Columbus schools
Thursday, September 13, 2007 3:45 PM

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Seven Columbus City Schools were released from lockdown around 3:40 p.m. today after gunshots were reported on the Near West Side.

Schools got the all-clear from Columbus police, district spokesman Michael Straughter said. “ Students have been released to their parents and buses are rolling.”

He said students were released with a letter encouraging them to go straight home.

Avondale, Dana, Sullivant, Burroughs and West Mound elementary schools, Starling Middle School and SuccessWorks Academy were placed under lockdown after gunshots were fired in the area of Avondale Avenue and W. Rich Street about 2:15 p.m.

Sgt. Richard Weiner said police cruisers had been in the area to investigate a stabbing from earlier today. One man was arrested in that case.

As the four officers in the last two cruisers were about to leave, they heard multiple gunshots, Weiner said. The officers, unsure if they were being fired at, called for assistance.

No cruiser was hit, and no shooters were found. Bullets were found in the side of a house at 234 Avondale and in a tree across from 248 Avondale but officers were unsure if they were from today’s shooting or previous incidents, Weiner said.

Police planned to stay in the area until school buses dropped off neighborhood children, Weiner said.

Thanks Velveeta.

A special emailer sent this in - QUOTE::

The details:

A Ramadi police officer said Abu Risha had received a group of poor people at his home earlier in the day, to mark the beginning of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. The officer, speaking on condition of anonymity out of security concerns, said authorities believed the bomb was planted by one of the visitors.

So in other words, he was killed for his own generosity! At the beginning of Ramadan it is customary for a sheikh to dispense zakat (charity) to the poor, though a lot of them don’t actually do it. Sattar always did because the poor were the ones who helped to protect him from al-Qaeda during his time on the run. From the looks of it, al-Qaeda took advantage of that fact and killed him.

“Possible sniper shoots Northern Calif. squad”

By Marisa Lagos
The San Francisco Chronicle

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “RICHMOND, Calif. — Someone apparently shot out the window of a Richmond police patrol car just outside the department’s headquarters this morning, shattering the back window of the cruiser but not injuring the officer driving the vehicle, officials said.

The mystery shot occurred as a patrol officer was pulling out of the driveway of the new police headquarters at 1689 Regatta Blvd. around 7:40 a.m., said Lt. Mark Gagan. It comes one day after the department rolled out SWAT teams because of what officers call an escalating gang war on this East Bay city’s streets. So far this week, 11 people have been shot, three of them fatally.

“(The officer) was pulling out of the main driveway going on patrol when he heard a pop and another officer did as well,” Gagan said. “The shot came from the east, and there was a car speeding by in the other lane but we didn’t get any info and there are a lot of places (around the station) for a sniper.”

Police are investigating the incident but are so far unsure where the potential shooter was located.”

U.S. develops 14-ton super bomb, bigger than Russian vacuum bomb
13/ 09/ 2007

WASHINGTON - The U.S. has a 14-ton super bomb more destructive than the vacuum bomb just tested by Russia, a U.S. general said Wednesday.

The statement was made by retired Lt. General McInerney, chairman of the Iran Policy Committee, and former Assistant Vice Chief of Staff of the Air Force. McInerney said the U.S. has "a new massive ordnance penetrator that's 30,000 pounds, that really penetrates ... Ahmadinejad has nothing in Iran that we can't penetrate." He also said the new Russian bomb was not a "penetrator."

On Tuesday, the Fox News television channel said: "A recent decision by German officials to withhold support for any new sanctions against Iran has pushed a broad spectrum of officials in Washington to develop potential scenarios for a military attack on the Islamic regime.". Commenting on the report, McInerney said: "Since Germany has backed out of helping economically, we do not have any other choice. ... They've forced us into the military option."

McInerney described some possible military campaign scenarios and said: "The one I favor the most, of course, is an air campaign," he continued. He said that bombing would be launched by 65-70 stealth bombers and 400 bombers of other types.

"Forty-eight hours duration, hitting 2500 aimed points to take out their [Iranian] nuclear facilities, their air defense facilities, their air force, their navy, their Shahab-3 retaliatory missiles, and finally their command and control. And then let the Iranian people take their country back," the general said describing the campaign, adding it would be "easy."

McInerney is well-known among the U.S. conservatives. He is the chairman of the Iran Policy Committee co-chaired by James Woolsey, former CIA director, William A. Nitze, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State and Richard Schifter, former Assistant Secretary of State, and Professor Raymond Tanter, former Personal Representative of the Secretary of Defense to arms control talks in Europe. The McInerney statement was made following a Fox News report that U.S. "officials are making plans to attack Iran as early as next summer," since Washington believes diplomatic efforts have failed.

The Wizard War
Wednesday, September 12, 2007

The National Science Foundation's "Darkweb" project is developing a variety of technologies to automate what only a few online sleuths can do: find Jihadis online and track them, even when they post under different names. It can perform content and traffic analysis and "profile" the style of authors.

Using advanced techniques such as Web spidering, link analysis, content analysis, authorship analysis, sentiment analysis and multimedia analysis, Chen and his team can find, catalogue and analyze extremist activities online. According to Chen, scenarios involving vast amounts of information and data points are ideal challenges for computational scientists, who use the power of advanced computers and applications to find patterns and connections where humans can not.

The Darkweb engine can construct a stylistic fingerprint of an author, even when the author posts under pseudonyms One of the tools developed by Dark Web is a technique called Writeprint, which automatically extracts thousands of multilingual, structural, and semantic features to determine who is creating 'anonymous' content online. Writeprint can look at a posting on an online bulletin board, for example, and compare it with writings found elsewhere on the Internet. By analyzing these certain features, it can determine with more than 95 percent accuracy if the author has produced other content in the past. The system can then alert analysts when the same author produces new content, as well as where on the Internet the content is being copied, linked to or discussed.
