:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
The Birth of al Qaedastan

In the year 2016, the world may find itself gloomily marking September 6 as the tenth anniversary of the creation of the Islamic Emirate of Waziristan. The Emirate received de facto recognition when the Taliban used the name on the ceasefire agreement they signed with Pakistan on that day in 2006. If things go terribly wrong in the coming decade, they could come to rule a mountainous fragment of Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The Emirate would be a nightmare state: Osama bin Laden as sultan, Ayman al Zawahiri as vizier, and Mullah Omar the spiritual leader. An economy built on smuggling and heroin. Primary export: terrorism. Welcome to ‘Al Qaedastan’.

Analysts say the rise of a terrorist state straddling the rugged area between Pakistan and Afghanistan is now viable. The reason is a number of troubling trends. One, the revival of a Taliban firmly in the control of Al Qaeda. Two, the seeming inability of either Kabul or Islamabad to defeat the new threat militarily. Three, and the most striking, the Taliban’s systematic supplanting of the traditional tribal leadership in the area. Full story...

“S Koreans told ‘convert or die’”
“The former hostages said they thought they would be killed”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “A group of South Koreans held hostage by Taleban militants in Afghanistan have said they were beaten and ordered at gunpoint to convert to Islam.

At a news conference in Seoul, the former captives also said they were made to work “like slaves” during their six-week ordeal.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The former hostages said they feared for their lives at times when their captors turned violent.

“We were beaten with a tree branch or kicked around. Some kidnappers threatened us with death at gunpoint to force us to follow them in chanting their Islamic prayer for conversion,” said Jae Chang-hee.

Armed Taleban aimed their guns at us, and a pit was before me
Yu Jung-hwa
“I was beaten many times. They pointed a rifle and bayonet at me and tried to force me to convert.”

He said the group “lived like slaves. We had to level the ground for motorbikes, and get water and make a fire”.

Another of the group, Yu Jung-hwa, described how she thought she was going to die.

“The most difficult moment, when I had a big fear of death, was when the Taleban shot [a] video.

“All 23 of us leaned against a wall and armed Taleban aimed their guns at us, and a pit was before me.

“They said they will save us if we believe in Islam. I almost fainted at the time and I still cannot look at cameras,” she said.

Leader executed

Cha Hae-jin said the group were kept “in a closed place like a shed” and were not allowed to go out. “It was like suffocating”, she said.

Han Ji-young recalled how the leader of the group, Bae Hyung-kyu, was led away to his death.

“One day, a Taleban called Bae and checked his first and last names and took him out of the room.

“Bae didn’t even look at us when he was leaving the room. He only said ‘Overcome with faith’,” Ms Han said, in tears.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “South Korea’s intelligence chief has refused to deny that his government paid a ransom to obtain the group’s release.”

Salt Lake City Man Sentenced for Race-motivated Assault

WASHINGTON – Keith W. Cotter was sentenced on Tuesday in federal court in Salt Lake City to 42 months imprisonment on federal hate crime charges. After release from prison, Cotter will be on federal supervised release for 3 years.

“The actions of the defendants in this case were despicable and intolerable,” said Rena J. Comisac, Acting Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division. “The Justice Department takes very seriously violent crimes bred of ignorance and hatred, and we will vigorously prosecute those who violate the civil rights of our fellow Americans.” On Nov. 2, 2005, a federal grand jury indicted Cotter and two other men, Robby W. Baalman and David Gardner, for participating in a race-motivated assault on an African-American Salt Lake City resident on March 12, 2005. During the assault, which occurred as the victim was riding his bike to work, the victim was kicked and struck by the defendants, including being struck in the head with a beer bottle. Cotter, a former member of the National Alliance, a white-supremacist group, pleaded guilty to this offense and agreed to cooperate with federal authorities investigating this and other race-motivated crimes of violence in the Salt Lake City area. Cotter’s codefendants, Gardner and Baalman, also pleaded guilty and were sentenced to 105 and 57 months of imprisonment respectively.

In April 2007, Cotter testified at the trial in which fellow former National Alliance members Shaun Walker, Travis Massey and Eric Egbert were convicted of conspiring to commit and participating in race-motivated assaults in the Salt Lake City area between December 2002 and March 2003. Walker has been sentenced to 87 months imprisonment and Egbert to 42 months imprisonment. Massey is scheduled to be sentenced on September 18, 2007.

In announcing Cotter’s sentencing, Acting Assistant Attorney General Comisac commended the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah, the Criminal Section of the Civil Rights Division, the FBI, and the Salt Lake City Police Department for their involvement in this prosecution.

Coalition Forces Nab 15 Terrorists in Iraq Operations

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Sept. 12, 2007 – Coalition forces detained 15 suspected terrorists during operations today targeting al Qaeda leaders and their networks in the northern part of Iraq.

Coalition forces in Mosul captured two wanted individuals believed to be finalizing plans for an attack on the Mosul airfield during Ramadan. The two also are suspected of conducting attacks against coalition forces.

Forces captured a mortar expert near the Syrian border wanted for his suspected involvement in August attacks on Kurdish government buildings in Sinjar. The ground forces detained six other suspected terrorists during the raid and discovered a cache of weapons, including machine guns and vehicle mounts. After clearing civilians from the area, coalition forces called in an air strike to destroy the cache.

Iraqi and coalition forces captured a suspected terrorist in Kirkuk wanted for his ties to senior al Qaeda leaders. The ground forces also detained five other suspects during the raid.

“Al Qaeda in Iraq has tried to move its operations and avoid the pressure we’re putting on them, but there’s no safe haven for terrorists in Iraq,” said Army Maj. Winfield Danielson, a Multinational Force Iraq spokesman. “We will continue to attack their network, no matter where their operatives hide.”

In other operations today:

— Coalition forces raided several buildings southeast of Baqubah during an operation targeting an al Qaeda senior leader in the area. When one man refused to follow the interpreter’s instructions and moved to retrieve a weapon, coalition forces engaged and killed the man. The ground forces detained two suspected terrorists during the raid and found weapons and military-style assault vests.

— In Tikrit, ground forces captured an individual believed to operate a car-bombing cell and allegedly associated with Haytham Sabah al-Badri, the mastermind behind the Samarra Golden Mosque bombing, who was killed in a coalition operation Aug. 2.

— North of Taji, coalition forces captured a suspected car-bombing operative from the Baghdad network. Four additional suspected terrorists were detained in the operation.

— Coalition forces further disrupted the Baghdad terrorist network when they detained five suspected terrorists during an operation targeting foreign terrorist facilitators on the south side of the city.

“Our operations will continue to target both terrorist leaders and their operatives,” Danielson said. “We want to ensure al Qaeda in Iraq remains unable to recover from the damage inflicted by coalition and Iraqi security forces.”

In operations earlier this week:

— In an operation yesterday in Taji, Iraqi special operations forces detained a Shiia extremist suspected of using his position in the Ministry of Interior to kidnap and murder Sunni citizens in the Jihad area of Baghdad. The suspected terrorist cell he operates is allegedly responsible for bombing and mortar attacks against Iraqi and coalition forces in addition to innocent citizens who stand against the group’s criminal activities. Four AK-47 rifles, a submachine gun, two pistols, a machine gun, and computer equipment were seized while four other individuals, suspected of being linked to his cell, were detained.

— During an operation Sept. 10, members of 9th Iraqi Army Division targeted individuals who are suspected of participating in bombing attacks against civilians, and Iraqi and coalition forces. One suspected terrorist is a known facilitator and manufacturer of car bombs, while another extremist allegedly supplies weapons to an al Qaeda cell in Taji. Nine AK-47 rifles with 11 loaded magazines, an anti-aircraft machine gun with a belt of ammunition, and a hand-held machine gun were seized during the raid.

— Soldiers with 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team captured 16 suspected insurgents during a raid Sept. 10 in the Rusafa district of eastern Baghdad.

— Coalition forces captured an individual northeast of Baghdad on Sept. 10 who is believed to be an al Qaeda leader responsible for attacks on coalition and Iraqi security forces in an area south of Baqubah. Coalition forces responded to the hostile threats of 12 men in the targeted building, killing them. Eight suspected terrorists, including the target individual, were detained during the operation.

— Using information from an earlier operation, coalition forces near Samarra on Sept. 10 captured a suspected al Qaeda member believed to be responsible for attacks against coalition forces. They also detained four other suspected terrorists.

— An air assault mission south of Baghdad on Sept. 10 led to the detention of three suspected militants being detained after they were discovered with explosives. The mission, dubbed Operation Falcon Fury, was led by 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade’s attack and assault elements and supported on the ground by soldiers from 4th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division.

“This intelligence-driven operation was designed to disrupt enemy forces in their perceived safe havens,” said Army Lt. Col. Robert E. Wilson, 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade’s executive officer. “The air assault methodology is ideally suited for combining our aerial capabilities with a top-notch and dynamically led infantry company to keep the enemy guessing as to the Marne Division’s next move.”

Elsewhere, Iraqi and coalition forces operating in Kirkuk captured an alleged terrorist facilitator who brought foreign suicide bombers into Iraq for a car-bombing cell in Hawijah. Intelligence reports also indicate the individual used his iron-working shop to make bombs. Along with the alleged facilitator, Iraqi and coalition forces detained three more suspected terrorists.

“We are continuing to aggressively assault the al Qaeda in Iraq networks that attack Iraqis and the security forces that protect them,” Danielson said.

Sydney port building evacuated (Australia)
September 13, 2007

A building at Sydney's Port Botany has been evacuated after two toxic chemicals were detected in a shipping container, NSW Fire Brigades say. Fire Brigades Superintendent Craig Brierley said routine checking of the container by Customs returned an unusually high reading of two chemicals just before 8am (AEST).

"Different detectors are now being used to take further readings to determine whether it is simply a glitch in the system," Supt Brierley said. "No one's been affected by the chemicals at all and the chances of that happening are minimal but we treat all these matters seriously. "The Customs building next door has been evacuated and nearby Bumborah Point Road has been closed."

Supt Brierley would not specify which two chemicals had been found, but confirmed they were toxic and used in the production of nerve gas, although they also had "hundreds of other uses".

Bomb threats to 4 locations keep Chesapeake emergency personnel busy (Virginia)
Sep 12, 2007

Chesapeake emergency officials are dealing with a series of bomb threats this morning.

According to a spokesperson for the fire department, at around 8:40 this morning, authorities received a bomb threat to 4 locations: Great Bridge High School, Great Bridge Bridge, the Chesapeake General District Court building and the Greenbrier Mall. The Great Bridge Bridge was shut down but has now been cleared and re-opened.

Great Bridge High School was briefly evacuated, but students returned to their classes after a few minutes. The General District Court building was cleared at around 10:40. Greenbrier Mall had not opened yet and security officers completed a sweep of the mall, with the mall finally opening at around 11. As a precaution, the Juveniler and Domestic Relations Court building was also being searched.

Security chief says terrorists have been arrested on Texas border
Sept. 12, 2007, 6:52PM

DALLAS — Texas' top homeland security official said Wednesday that terrorists with ties to Hezbollah, Hamas and al-Qaida have been arrested crossing the Texas border with Mexico in recent years.

"Has there ever been anyone linked to terrorism arrested?" Texas Homeland Security Director Steve McCraw said in a speech to the North Texas Crime Commission. "Yes, there was." His remarks appear to be among the most specific on the topic of terrorism arrests along the Texas-Mexico border. Local and elected officials have alluded to this happening but have been short on details.

Leticia Zamarripa, a spokeswoman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement in El Paso, said Wednesday she was unaware of any border arrests of people with terrorist ties. An ICE spokeswoman in San Antonio did not return phone messages left by The Associated Press. U.S. Border Patrol spokesman Lloyd M. Easterling was unable to comment.

However, McCraw's remarks are similar to those made recently by National Intelligence Director Mike McConnell, who last month told the El Paso Times that a small number of people with known links to terrorist organizations have been caught crossing the border. McCraw identified the most notable figure captured as Farida Goolam Mahomed Ahmed, who was arrested in July 2004 at the McAllen airport. She carried $7,300 in various currencies and a South African passport with pages missing. Federal officials later learned she waded across the Rio Grande.

After her arrest, U.S. Customs and Border Protection issued a release saying she was wanted for questioning about the bombing of a U.S. Consulate office, jibing with similar statements from a U.S. congressman. But the department quickly retracted the terrorism connection, calling it "inaccurate on several levels." Michael Shelby, then the U.S. attorney in Houston, said in January 2005 that any suggestion Ahmed was involved in terrorism "is in error."

According to federal court records, Ahmed pleaded guilty to improper entry by an alien, making a false statement and false use of a passport. She was sentenced to time served and deported to South Africa. Other details of the case were sealed. But on Wednesday, McCraw described Ahmed as having ties to an insurgent group in Pakistan and whose specialty was smuggling Afghanis and other foreign nationals across the border. U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman Michael Friel could not confirm details about Ahmed on Wednesday.

McCraw also said that since March 2006, 347 people from what he called "terrorism-related countries" have been arrested crossing the border in Texas. The number of Iraqis captured at the border has tripled since last year, he said. "A porous border without question is a national security threat," he said.

Terrorism isn't the only concern for homeland security officials in Texas, McCraw said. The state's size, population and geography make it susceptible to all sorts of disasters, both natural and man-made. Emergency responders must also be prepared for natural disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes, floods and wildfires, he said. The state has made significant strides in emergency planning since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and Hurricane Rita, McCraw said. Plans include cooperating with large private companies, including grocery stores, Wal-Mart and the oil industry, to help the state respond during disasters. "This is not a shot at FEMA, but we can't depend on FEMA to protect Texas," McCraw said. "The governor's mandate has made it clear: If those buses don't come, we better have our own buses. If that food doesn't come,we better have our own food. If that water doesn't come, we better have our own water to take care of Texas."

I am sorry if this is a repeat. I know there is supposed to be a third tape coming out about the reasons for the hit on Wahsington and New York. My question why now? We already have been told the reason. My concern if this is an old hit or possibly one for tomorrow when the President gives his spiel about IRAQ and the draw down. Something does not smell right with me on this. OBL seemed on the surface inconsequential with his tape and the second tape. So what is up. I read the thread that certain nameless individuals who have tirelessly given up their time and energy to beat them at their own game. But still it is like they are waiting to release it for a reason.
