Thompson to Announce Run for President with Online Video Followed by Three-State Campaign Tour

McLean, VA – On September 6, 2007, Fred Thompson will be announcing his intention to run for President of the United States with a webcast available to millions at www.imwithfred.com. The launch of the video will be followed by a five-day campaign tour through Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina.

“I believe that there are millions of Americans who know that our security and prosperity are at risk if we don’t address the challenges of our time; the global threat of terrorism; taxes and spending that will bankrupt future generations, and a government that can’t seem to get the most basic responsibilities right for its citizens,” stated Fred Thompson.

“The response that we’ve received makes me confident that we have an opportunity to change politics in Washington and across the country, and take on these challenges the way every generation of Americans has faced the challenges of their time – with unity, hard work and a belief that we will come out on the winning side,” continued Thompson.

“We enter this campaign in a strong position,” said committee manager Bill Lacy. “Fred is consistently near the top in the polls, and conservatives across the country have put together the closest thing to a draft in recent presidential campaign history in an effort to bring about this day. The next few weeks will only serve to build upon those efforts, with house parties nationwide on the 6th, and visits to the early primary states of Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina, quickly followed by stops in Florida and a homecoming in Lawrenceburg, TN on the 15th.”

“By announcing via webcast, Fred is able to take his consistently mainstream conservative message directly to the voters, who are already responding to that message with a strong upwelling of grassroots support. The webcast and the following campaign tour will play to Fred’s strengths, a consistent record of conservatism, his ability to clearly spread his message, and his ability to work with and connect with Americans from all walks of life,” said Lacy.

The committee will file our formal paperwork with the Federal Elections Commission within 15 days, the time allowed by law after Fred decided to run. Additionally, we will begin to consider candidate based events following Fred’s broadcast on September 6, 2007.

I agree...effectively securing the border is priority #1.

But it is NOT in exchange for figuring out who is here and giving them aspirations of citizenship.

You keep overlooking that. Exactly WHO do you think Fred is talking about?

Doling out amnesty is unacceptable and one of the #1 reasons I will NOT be supporting Fred. Interestingly, there are Fred supporting econobots who, knowingly, have no problem with it.

Where do you stand? Which illegal aliens would you give amnesty to?

No one is “doling out amnesty”, and such misrepresentation is beneath you.

So I take it he won’t be in the September 5th debate? That’s actually somewhat of a disappointment, but I can deal with it. At least he’ll be in my area (Portsmouth) soon thereafter. I can’t wait!

OK. The leftist slime machine will now start and attempt to invent things that he never did.
The motto of the left is “by any means necessary”.

Whaddya mean, “Will start”? They’re already getting up a pretty good head of steam, what with his “abortion” stance (LA Times) and bagging on his wife Jeri (everyone in the MSM).

You do know what aspirations are, don't you?
Since when is giving someone hope that they might someday become citizens the same as granting them amnesty?

If being second in polls before declaration is dithering, I need to get dithering myself, I may get my desk cleared of work...

I guess Duncan has a way to “beam them out”...

He should use that to “beam” himself up in the polls...

So you want to wait until we mange to find away to deport 12 million BEFORE we secure the border?Good luck with that.

When you come up with that technology I would like to patent it. I could build a pump that moves 12 Gallons per minute but can stop a 30 gallon leak...

“Thompson will wipe the floor with the faker from Massachusetts”

Agreed. I predict one or more moments like the Lloyd Bentsen-Dan Quayle debate, where Fred waits for him to lay out one of four positions he has taken on an issue and then lands a haymaker on him that just devastates him.

BTW, Fred is now within 5 of Rudy (25-20) in Rasmussen this morning. Mitt, who had gotten as high as 17% on Wednesday, has sunk back to his normal showing of 13%. By September 15, Rudy will be in Fred’s rear view mirror too .

You are misrepresenting what Fred said, not Kimberly. In that same quote he said sending them back is “not going to happen”. For your enlightenment:

“Because we allowed ourselves to wait until we woke up one day and found 12 million illegals here, there’s no easy solution. And I think that you have to realize that you’re either going to drive 12 million people underground permanently, which is not a good solution. You’re going to get them all together and get them out of the country, which is not going to happen. Or you’re going to have to, in some way, work out a deal where they can have some aspirations of citizenship, but not make it so easy that it’s unfair to the people waiting in line and abiding by the law.”

No worries, we’ll overcome the conservatives like you that have been doing there level best to convince everyone not to support Hunter. For your own sake.

Don’t “enlighten” me, pissant, with the same fraudulent tactics. I know that quote. I know it’s context. And I know what else Thompson has said on the issue. My interpretation is correct in that sense, and to twist it into some form of faux “open borders” position is very, very wrong.

How is announcing that you’re going to announce any different from announcing?

The sad thing is, he is right, we are not going to get all of them together and get them out. It is just not possible.

It will take a combination of things to get this solved. First and above all else close the border or we are spitting in the wind. Then send back the violent criminals, the ones in our jails now and those we catch later. Create a work environment that will cause as much self deportation as possible. Deport the odd ones here and there that we can catch and with time we will be down to a manageable level, perhaps with less than a quarter to a half left, and those will be doing jobs and be productive potential citizens, which is not a bad thing, it is where we got our start...

The solution has to be based in reality, it has to be fair, generally acceptable and supported by the majority, for the long haul I might add, since it will take a few years. We may not like it, but thats the facts, core conservatives don't hold a majority and if we keep acting like spoiled brats with an ax to grind we will get BUPKIS, and we will be up to our asses in illegals

These guys are not running for President of Fantasy Land...

I told you roughly eight hours ago to support whoever you like. Conservatives like me know the difference between a long shot and a legitimate candidate. Whether Fred can garner the nomination is still up in the air, but I like his chances. After months of campaigning, Hunter has made no impact on the primary race.

There are only two groups throwing cold water on Fred`s campaign at this point. Disaffected crybabies like you and the liberal media. That includes the Bush/Giuliani shills over at Fox News.

Legal distinctions with the FEC.

Well, ace, “we have to work out a deal to give them aspirations for citizenship” is mush-mouth nonsense, I agree. It might mean many things, but it certainly does not mean deportations. Can you point to a quote or a proposed bill or amendment Fred made in his 8 year senate career to deport the illegals? That’s right, you can’t. Yet you believe this moderate is now a conservative on the issue. A bald Howie Baker, frankly.
