The publication of Mother Teresas letters, concerning her personal crisis of faith, can be seen either as an act of considerable honesty or of extraordinary cynicism (or perhaps both of the above). These scrawled, desperate documents came to light as part of the investigation into her suitability for sainthood; an investigation conducted by Father Brian Kolodiejchuk, the Canadian priest who is the editor of this volume. And they were actually first published in the fall of 2002, by the Zenit news agencya Vatican-based outlet associated with a militant Catholic right-wing group known as the Legion of Christ. So, which is the more striking: that the faithful should bravely confront the fact that one of their heroines all but lost her own faith, or that the Church should have gone on deploying, as an icon of favorable publicity, a confused old lady who it knew had for all practical purposes ceased to believe?

I seem to recall that Jesus himself had his moments of self-doubt. if it can happen to him, then surely we can cut mothr Teresa some slack...
I had to laugh that Hitchens’ book got beat again this week on the Times’ book by three professed Christians in Dog Chapman, Tony Dungy, and Denise Jackson. I just heard today that Dungy’s book, Quiet Strength, goes back to No. 1 on Sept. 9. It’s also fun how much better Dungy’s book has done than Al Gore’s book.
It also shouldn’t be surprised that Mother Theresa struggled at times with her faith. That’s why it’s called faith.
Peoples of all faiths in the Judeo/Christian world will question themselves from time to time. If this idiot doesn’t understand this, he should leave it alone.
She remained true to her faith and her belief in God. People like Hitchens have no faith so try to put everything into a neat little box marked black and white. Therefore if Mother Theresa EVER for a moment questioned her faith then there is the proof that Christianity is crumbling. After all if someone like Mother Theresa loses faith then there is nothing to believe in after all.
Hitchens is proof positive that even a supposed smart person can be an utter idiot at times.
IIRC, she requested her letters be destroyed.
Lesson ~
Never put ANYTHING in writing, you wouldn’t want the world to know.
That’s what I recall, too. For crying out loud, can’t a person have an intelligent and healthy soul-search sometime? Sheesh!
Shows that she's just like the rest of us.
Not saying I agree with the Catholic church's practice of professing her as a "saint" since she, too, is saved only by the grace of Christ as are all christians, but she did many good things.
Who is athier, Hitchens or Newsweek?
Mother Therese “put on Christ” every day, even when she doubted. That is the beauty and essence of Christianity. Unfortunately, Mr. Hitchens is one who cannot allow the possibility of God’s existence. He is lost. Let us pray for him.
“Teresa, Bright and Dark
(Newsweek gives Christopher Hitchens an athiest soapbox)”
I hope Hitchens’ brother (Peter?) gets to write out a public response.
The interplay between these two brothers is something to watch/hear!
Christopher denies that Jesus ever existed and chalks it up as a myth with less foundation than King Arthur. He never voices similar dissent about Mohammed’s cult claiming he rode into heaven on the back of a horse.
Newsweak.
But the headline suggest that Hitchens is the athiest atheist. So I would take it that Newsweak is the less athier of the two.
“Mother Theresa did more for the unfortunate in the World in a single day than Christopher Hitchens will accomplish in his entire life”
Well said.
Hitchens in fact has a lot of faith - in himself.
