As the Armys suicide rate hits record levels in the Iraq war, theres small wonder practically everyone in Congress wants to deal with the parallel emerging crisis of depressed veterans tempted to take their own lives. Everyone, that is, except Senator Tom Coburn, Republican of Oklahoma. He stands alone in blocking final passage of a suicide prevention bill in fear that the governments record-keeping on troubled vets might somehow crimp their ability to purchase handguns.
snip...
It is an eminently good thing that the anti-suicide measure would require medical specialists to keep track of veterans found to be high risks for suicide. But thats to care for them as human beings, under that other constitutional right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Respect for the grave sacrifices by veterans requires the Senate to strike down the Coburn ploy and hurry this vital measure to President Bush.

This is too rich for words. The gun-grabbers on 43rd St think "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" is in the Constitution rather than the DOI. Geez, NY Times, left wing and ignorant is no way to go through life.

Furthermore, Constitutional rights protect you from infringements by government, they don't require the government to remove all pointy objects from your environment for your own protection.
Don't they have Editors at the New York Times?

The New York Times is using the "We Like It, So It's Constitutional" standard again...

This shows in a perfect manner the depth of the Times’ knowledge and understanding of the Constitution and the Founding of this great nation. Pravda would likely not have made this mistake.

This is incredible. “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness is a personal endeavor. The damn Government has no role in this. The guarantee for ones personal pursuit. I guess now the libs think the government guarantees happiness! This is the best laugh I have had this morning!

They need some diversity in editing over there. At least ONE conservative who has an idea of the issues surrounding this country's Founding.

Perhaps the Times should remind military men of the Constitutional requirement that they “Don’t fire until they see the whites of their eyes.” Also, the required military signal in the Constitution “One if by land, two if by sea.”

I guess when you have never read the Constitution or the Declaration nor bothered to understand either, that mistake is easy to make.
What a numbskull.

Are you an onion member? Do you pay dues to belong to that onion? Are the dues, if paying, used to help other onion members or for cheap political contributions?
To: Pharmboy
The NYT likes this because this means ALL former military service forfeits your second amendment rights under “mental health” provisions.

Now that the NYT has declared a Constitutional right to life (among other things), can we expect them to denounce their previous pro-abortion position?

Isn’t the “original” Constitution kept in the lobby of the NYT? Each writer/worker at the NYT must touch it every morning, and through osmosis, learn it! Reading it, and possibly understanding it, is not required. The only required reading at the NYT is "The Communist Manifesto".
