Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards told a labor group he would ask Americans to make a big sacrifice: their sport utility vehicles.
The former North Carolina senator told a forum by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, yesterday he thinks Americans are willing to sacrifice.
Edwards says Americans should be asked to drive more fuel efficient vehicles. He says he would ask them to give up SUVs.
Edwards got a standing ovation when he said weapons and equipment used by America's military needs to be made in the United States. He says tanks and ammunition for M16 rifles are being made in other countries.
He says jobs that provide equipment for America's defense need to be made in the United States.
“Didn’t SUVs originate from trucks in the first place?”
From a production standpoint, yeah. Seems those little minivans with small engines and car suspensions couldn’t cut hauling around families and their gear on a regular basis. The cheapest and easiest way to remedy that was to build extended seating vehicles on truck chassis instead of cars.
I have a Nissan Titan. When looking at parts and accessories, they are usually listed as Titan/Armada, Armada being their big SUV. Most comparable sized Ford and GM SUVs are built on their truck platforms as well. At the very least, they share the same drive-trains.
I believe the Suburban gets credit as the first SUV as we know it today.
I recommend he save all of those trees — do not thin them — because it is wrong to deny fuel to a forest fire.

Funny I don’t think the crowd he preached to was
likely to be receptive...
Not only will it mean less carbon emissions, but there will be less traffic in the way when he is running around in his SUV.
Don’t miss post #41... aerial shot of the Breck Girl’s 30,000+ square foot mega-mansion, complete with multiple SUVs. What a hypocrite!
I would just say no.
People will give up their trucks the day that the stars give up their private jets.
I think after graduation this December, I’ll go (to paraphrase John F’n Kerry) “get me one of those SUV’s”. :) Regards!

And he waits us 'little people' to bow down. What a kook. One of my favorite parts of the debate was the audience member who shouted out the retort to Romney's comments about Edwards' proposed 'tax-free' savings plan (no tax for savings up to $250), the $250 being less than the cost of one of Silky Pony's haircuts. Bwa ha.
