Absolute vanity about tattoos.

Posted on 08/28/2007 9:06:17 PM PDT by ozaukeemom

Over the years, I have thought about getting a tattoo. Surprising considering my fear of needles! lol I see them everywhere on every classs of person, I see the artwork vary from onr body to another. What causes someone to decide to have a tattoo. Is it cultural? Is it a fad? I am seriously thinking about it now. Any stories, suggestions? Thank you!

"Most importantly, we found that commercially acquired tattoos accounted for more than twice as many hepatitis C infections as injection-drug use," Dr. Haley said. "This means that it may have been the largest single contributor to the nationwide epidemic of this form of hepatitis."

How old is that study? I am familiar with several tattoo shops, and in every one needles are not reused. Every customer gets new sterile needles and ink. There is no way hepatitis can be transmitted in those shops. This started in this area over 20 years ago.

Just think how much you want to have something when you're sixty that looks like a bruise or a giant roach crawling on you.

I’m in my 60s. None of my tattoos have changed. My newest one is over 20 years old.

Yep - the price rose considerably when celebrities started getting them - just like the price of blue jeans went up when Jimmy Carter made them popular among the wealthier class.

If you’re interested in how most guys view it, each square inch of visible tat is about equal to adding four pounds of fat, and requires 2/3 of a beer to ameliorate the effects of it.

Really? I guess I and every man I know are in the minority.

It’s only going to be a growth field, (as idiots who got tatoos realize how crappy they look.)

I'm too lazy to search for it but there is an article here somewhere about the Chinese tattoo guy wanted in Britain. Seems the local thugs were all getting tattoos with Chinese characters because it allegedly made them look tough but, of course, none of them knew a word of Chinese.

One guy's tattoo read "Always read the fine print." Another said "At the end of the day, this is one ugly boy."

The thugs had no idea until they tried to hit on some Asian girls who couldn't stop laughing when shown the tattoos.

I agree completely, and those that are truly from tribes who earned it as a rite of passage.

Talk about the ‘herd mentality.’

I see these kids just out of college working at my company. They have tattoos and piercings and look at you like, “I’m blowing your mind.” They have know idea what a bunch of Bobby Brady computer wimps they are.

Yeah. Poor mistreated gangbanging, murdering, raping babies. I feel so sorry for them. The pain of having to live the rest of their lives with a messed up tat not being able to PROUDLY proclaim they were graduates of “Folsom” or “San Quentin”!
The nerve of that doctor! And to think all he did was SAVE THEIR LIVES, despite their cursing and threats.

“along with a flower on my left hand - flower = posy = equal port. In my 20 years I could never keep “port” and “starboard” straight.”

Guess you never noticed that “port” and “left” are four letter words?

see them everywhere on every classs of person

Actually no. You don't see them on every class of person - just some classes of people. Go to a large corporation and look at the management. You won't see any tatoos or piercings. Go to a hospital. You won't see any tatoos on the doctors. Go to any stockholders meeting. You won't see any tatoos on the board members.

Go to the quick lube. You will see tatoos on the people who change the oil. Go to the parole office. You will see lots of tatoos on those reporting in. Go to a courtroom. You won't see any tatoos on the judge, but you'll see them on the defendent if it's a criminal case. Get the picture?

>>>I met a surgeon in my training who would intentionally sew the prison tattoo ( belly tattoo of “Folsom” or “Vacaville” etc) off center to mess them up when he operated on them.<<<

The nerve of that doctor! And to think all he did was SAVE THEIR LIVES, despite their cursing and threats.

Okay to "mess them up", then. Situational ethics and all. How a person treats the lowest members of society says a lot about him. Bluefish is right, this doc is/was a jerk.

I am sorry. I did end up going to bed after realizing the time. I am reading the responses and really appreciate all of the input! I have thought of having one that represents some changes in my life, discreet, but there for me. I have thought of it for years, but have not wanted the negative connotations that can go with them.
I apologize for seagulling.

They have a restaurant in Grafton called the Paramount that is dedicated to it! Awesome place!

Some random thoughts:

Don't get a "bimbo barcode" (had to get that phrase in)!

Rent the movie "Tattooo" with Bruce Dern and Maude Adams. It is slow-moving, but well worth it to see the paint-job they did on Adams. Wow. (Warning, movie contains some nudity.)

And lastly, with thanks to Rhymes With Orange, get yourself some oil of wintergreen and access to a color LASER printer (inkjet printers WILL NOT work). Print your art mirrored so it will come out frontward. Apply oil of wintergreen to body part and press image to same part. The resulting "tattoo" will last from one to three showers.

HTH, HAND

First off, don't ask others if you should get a tattoo. If you want one, get one. :)

Second, design a tattoo that means something to you.

Third, work with a tattoo artist to clean up the design. Ask to see their portfolio.

Fourth and my opinion, get the tattoo in a place where it is not visible unless you want someone to see it.

“You got a booger-thing goin’ on.”

Yeah...well...I’m trying to resist the temptation to venture into a lengthy discussion about our society’s decline and the symbology of our return to tribalism...tattoos, piercing, “music” that’s about as base and devolved as man has ever seen, splintering into subgroups based on race, decreasing emphasis on education, idol worship (Hollywood)...stuff like that.

if it’s for you and it means something and will inspire you whenever you look at it, then stop reading these responses. it’s a personal choice and it just might be the right thing to do for you. you only live once and if you’ll regret not doing it in 5 years, then do it!

I tried to avoid most of the classic four letter words - except when needed.

I would advise that since you are a ‘mom’ don’t do it. My sister in law, a very solid, high class member of society said she always wanted one so at age 58 she got a small red heart tattooed on her hip. Within 2 years her 30 year old college and private school educated daughter, had a tattoo on her back and shoulder that was as big as a luncheon sized plate and multicolored. Monkey see monkey do.
