NEW 'KID NATION' PROBE

By Post staff writer

August 28, 2007 -- ONE of the TV industry's biggest unions is launch ing its own investigation of the controversial CBS reality series "Kid Nation."

The American Federation of Television & Radio Artists says it wants to find out if any of its rules were broken during the filming of the show in New Mexico.

"Kid Nation" - which features 40 kids ages 8-15 who inhabit their own small town without parental supervision - has come under scrutiny recently because of allegations that some of the kids were injured during production and that all the children were made to work unusually long hours.

A CBS spokesperson said the network continues to support the series and that it will premiere on Sept. 19.

This is getting ridiculous. Lex Moonves is playing us for patsies. We who call ourselves conservatives are reacting like Pavlov’s dogs. I’m with the writer who described the whole thing as basically summer camp.

We’re letting our own lurid imaginations conjure up visions of “Lord of the Flies” mixed with “The Harrad Experiment.” We setting ourselves up for a major let-down.

I’m for anything that puts kids to work. I think sweat shops might lead to less troubled kids, better future adults.

This isn’t like the South Park episode where it is truly Lord of the Flies. While the concept is silly, you know what, there were tons of adults around the area to watch the kids.

This was summer camp. Not bad. Kids got hurt? Well, kids get hurt. So?

Man, I want some compensation for all those owies I got and all the long hours I put in as staff at the Boy Scout camp!

You should have SEEN those owies!
They even required Band-Aids!!

Why would anyone want to watch 40 kids play in a ghost town?

Outside of entertaining pedophiles, I don’t get it.

A comedian once said, “Just because it’s made by a 10 year old, doesn’t mean it’s made poorly!”

Yes, it is weird.

I wonder if the Dateline people will try to run a pedophile sting on the viewers that watch it....(chuckle)

some of the kids were injured during production and that all the children were made to work unusually long hours.

Wasn't the whole premise of the show that these kids were building their own town, and handling everything themselves? When adults moving across the country for the first time were doing the same, were they worried about how many hours of the day there were working? I don't think so. They worked until they couldn't work any more because of the dark, or the weather, and until the job was done. Overtime wasn't in their vocabulary.
