The Michael Vick dogfighting scandal is morphing into a broader NFL dogfighting scandal, as other NFL players also appear to be involved in this very weird pastime.
But as animal-rights groups get more aggressive in their accusations and demands, the whole scene is getting stranger. And the closer you look, the more you see the deep conflicts in core values that fracture our society.
among PETA's prohibitions, is the use of animal skins. The ball, as in football, is an inflated leather object endearingly called the "pigskin."
Why does PETA oppose existing NFL conduct policy, and not football itself?
J.C. Watts, Chuck Colson and others have asked why abuse of dogs is outrageous to so many who see no similar outrage in the 800,000-plus abortions that occur in the United States each year. At the most intuitive level, there is something unsettling about an attitude for which abuse of a dog is intolerable, but women destroying their unborn children with impunity is not a problem.
"When it comes to pain, love, joy, loneliness, and fear, a rat is a pig is a dog is a boy," says PETA founder Ingrid Newkirk.
the site refers to the writings of Princeton philosopher Peter Singer, author of "Animal Liberation."
Now Singer has written on a great deal more than animal rights. He's the author of "Practical Ethics," in which he offers his justifications for euthanasia, abortion and infanticide.
According to Singer, parents should be permitted to kill a baby born with a tragic illness or defect...

How amazingly progressive! Anyone care to join me in a rousing chorus of "Deutchland Uber Alles?"/S
I'm always amazed when the lefties call conservatives "NAZI".

Just because PETA are a bunch of loons doesn’t make Vick any less evil.
Couldn’t care less about PETA but dogfighters should be given a choice of life in prison or death in gladiatorial games. Smells like apologia for Vick via a red herring.

Peter Singer is a Princeton philosopher ...
like Medical Doctor Jerry Vlasak and his wife, the former child actress Pamelyn Ferdin, are both directors of a militant direct action Los Angeles group called the Animal Defense League who support political assassination ...

I can't believe this is coming from a US Newspaper. This sounds like a posting from here on FreeRepublic.
Are our newspapers actually doing honest reporting now?

What's even creepier is that Peter Singer's parents were Jewish Holocaust survivors.
Try to get your mind around THAT.
He's a prof. at my alma mater, which makes me ashamed.

Take revenge by not sending any alumni cash and tell them why too. Unless we speak up it will never change. Colleges/university is the source for all PC ruining the fabric of America.

PETA is as sick as Vick Sicker, actually. I will not allow myself to be allied with the malicious idiots at PeTA in my rush to condemn the actions of Michael Vick.

The rebuilding of Michael Vick’s image has begun.
First step was his plea bargain, and so called ‘apology’.
Next up, define everybody outraged over Michael Vick’s behavior as ‘wacko’s belonging to PETA’.
Once this phase is over (it will grow over the next few weeks and months whenever Vick is brought up) then it will be time for Vick to donate a large sum of money to the Humane Society, and perhaps a dog rescue organization or three....so he can demonstrate he deals with the ‘normal dog lovers’.
Watch and see....whoever is running the PR damage control for him knows their business.
As do I.

Who cares? I don't support PETA. The choice isn't condoning dog-fighting vs. supporting PETA or dog-fighting vs. abortion, it's condoning dog-fighting vs. not condoning dog-fighting. I don't condone dog-fighting. Simple.

How do you get around lying to the NFL commissioner and the Falcons owner ?
To: AnotherUnixGeek
You deserve a rousing round of applause.
I think dog-fighting is reprehensible, but I have absolutely no connection to PeTA at all. I’m sick of this argument. I think abortion is even more reprehensible. I don’t go around bombing clinics, either.

Better question; How do you get around associating with known gamblers?
Answer; You don’t.
I didn’t say the rehabilitation would be ‘successful’ I just noted its begun.
