A Greek prosecutor today ordered an investigation into whether arson attacks, which have been blamed for the worst forest fires in decades, could be considered terrorist acts. The public order ministry said Dimitris Papangelopoulos, who is responsible for prosecuting terrorism and organised crime, ordered the investigation to determine "whether the crimes of arsonists and of arson attacks on forests carried out in the country during the summer of 2007" could come under Greece's anti-terrorism law.
The investigation would also seek to identify those who were responsible, the statement said. At least 63 people have died in the fires. A blaze broke out today on the fringes of Athens, burning down a slope of Mount Ymittos and threatening a suburb of the capital.
Four planes, a helicopter and 15 trucks with 45 firefighters attended the fire as it burned through shrubs toward the suburb of Papagou. A pall of smoke hung over central Athens, and the smell of burning permeated the air.
Firefighters and planes from across Europe, backed by soldiers, police, officials and hundreds of thousands of volunteers, joined the fight yesterday against forest fires that have caused death and destruction across Greece over 48 hours.
Italy, France, Germany, Norway and Spain despatched aircraft and commandos to a nation that by last night appeared increasingly unable to combat the fires.

Fires being set would be the most easy form of terrorism to pull off I guess.
I think arsonists should get the death penalty, whether they’re terrorists or not. The consequences of their actions are the same.
Those dang greeks - always causing problems!
Kegger gone wild?
Bush was a greek in college....
Therefore
Bush's fault
I’ve had a short discussion with someone in Greece on another forum. Their take is that this all started as an attempt to open up protected forest land for development, and it got out of control. Gonna be some murder charges coming.
Greece was part of the Ottoman empire and that means the Muslims regard it as rightfully part of the ulema and they intend to take it back.
All the towns mentioned, except Pieria, are in Northern Greece, not even in the Peloponnese region where the fires originally started. If you look a the map below Peloponnese is #9; Ioannina, Florina, Kozani, and Thesprotia are numbers #6, 13, & 3. Pieria is #1 in Attica not in the Peloponnese region either.
Yup, something ain't right in dodge and I think I might know what.
ping....
NO doubt in my mind after being there for the last 3+ weeks...sabotage... and not the kind many Greeks think it is..they are living in denial when they and the media in denial crowd blame the proponents of the proposed “ionian road” or the golf resorts...fire is being used as a tool of fear by Islamic terrorists in Europe.
Arsonists are murderers, cowards and terrorists without the benefit of martyrdom, which we should impose on them instead,
I agree with your sentiments. Arsonists caught in the act should be shot on the spot.
