Last week, I was grocery shopping overheard a little boy (maybe 3 YO or so) talking to his daddy.

Boy: Dad weren't you in Afghanistan?
Dad: Yeah. Hey, do you like these Oatmeal Pies?
Boy: But where is Afghanistan?
Dad: Buddy, it's a whole different part of the world. Do you want donuts?
Boy: So, what's it called there?
Dad: It's called ...Afghanistan.

At this point I started to chuckle. Geez, how many times have we all been shopping, just trying to get the heck out, and your little kid keeps asking questions and distracting you?

I thought the whole thing was just as cute as can be. Dad noticed me laughing and got a little huffy saying, "Well, I don't know how to explain it to him!"

Then he hurried away. It didn't occur to me until minutes later that he might have thought I was laughing at him. I wish I'd thought to say something nice.

Just typical of what I see on nearly every day. Modest, unassuming, resolute, determined, and brave.

I hope he knew.

I racked my brain to think of what to say, the whole time looking at him and hoping he didn’t see me looking at him and thinking I was nuts while I figured out what to say.

Sometimes, it’s awkward.

Beautiful.

I had a similar experience. While leaving a coffee place, I saw two soldiers in their camo, waiting in line. I went back to the line, shook each of their hands and thanked them for our service. The first soldier just smiled and said, “It’s my honor, ma’am.”

(lump in throat)

God bless them all.

Our young men in uniform are mature beyond their years. Their smiles are worthy of the purest gold, and our reward for taking the time to thank them is priceless. They give us so much for which to be proud and thankful.

That’s sure the truth. My son does that, too - even in front of his liberal relatives!

No problem.

One training day was just terrible. Nothing was going right, so by quitting time I was just in a very foul mood. On my rear windshield I have a sticker that says “Combat medic”, and somebody must have thought that was interesting, because as I was sitting at a red light the car next to me rolled down his window. “Are you in the military?” he asked, not noticing my ACUs. “Yeah,” I replied, wary because I’m in Seattle, a liberal hotbed. “Thanks for everything you do,” is what he said. And with that, that crappy day flipped a 180, and I was sporting a smile all the way home.

Bless that man for honoring you and for what you have done for our country. I guess we just don't realize what a small word of kindness can do for someone. I Praise God for all our servicemen and servicewomen. We have two Congressional Medal of Honor Men in our family and they have both passed away in the last five years. One from Iwo Jima and one from Viet Nam. They were so humble and honorable.
